In just 3 months I’ll be defending and prosecuting in the Courts of England and Wales. I’m 24. I’m mixed-race. I’m from Essex. I’m not posh. I worked hard and NEVER listened when people said the Bar wasn’t for people like me. THIS is what a barrister looks like.
I thought I’d explain what happened today because I’m absolutely exhausted and tbh I think a light needs to be shone on this. Especially given so many people like me seem to experience the same thing.
Thankfully, the prosecutor and I were eventually able to have our conversation and the case proceeded smoothly.
This really isn’t ok though.
I don’t expect to have to constantly justify my existence at work.
Today I was assumed to be a defendant 3 times and a journalist once (lol).
There MUST be something about my face that says “not a barrister” because I am literally wearing a black suit like everyone else.
I don’t get it. Today it actually upset me a bit but... we move x
First, the security officer asked me what my name was so he could ‘find [my] name on the list’ (the list of defendants). I explained I was a barrister. He apologised and guided me through security.
At this point I tried to shrug it off as an innocent mistake.
A letter I’ve received (sent to chambers):
“You are the proof that Blacks can achieve high status appointments in British (White) society if they graft away, behave better and respect the customs, traditions, characteristics and history of their adopted nation.”
Racism is real.
Black people’s value to society and our right to be treated with dignity and respect should not be dependent on our success.
Rashford, Sancho and Saka are incredibly impressive, but racism is wrong regardless of who they are.
Black people don’t have to be heroes to have value.
I, AGAIN, explained that I am a defence barrister trying to speak to the prosecutor. She looked at me, said “oh right, ok” and continued with what she was doing.
As I opened the door, a solicitor/ barrister said I needed to wait outside court and said the usher (who, btw, was next to me) would come outside and sign me in & the court would call me in for my case. I explained I’m a barrister. She looked embarrassed and said “oh. I see.”
At the door a member of the public told me not to go into the courtroom. I asked why and she said because it’s a court, only lawyers can go in. She said I was a journalist.
The usher (the one person who recognised I was a barrister today) said to ignore her and to head on in.
We need to see role models. We need to change public perception. We need to stop the assumptions.
I tweeted this almost two years ago but I’m tweeting it again.
THIS is what a barrister looks like.
Let’s change perceptions. Share your photo and let’s celebrate diversity ❤️
She turned back around and I walked towards the prosecutor, ready to have our conversation. Before I got there the clerk, VERY loudly, told me to leave the courtroom and said the usher would be out shortly. Before I could respond she then asked if I was represented.
Second, after speaking to my client I opened the door to the courtroom to discuss the case with the prosecutor who was sitting inside. The bench weren’t in the room so it was the perfect time.
(Continued...)
Pretty much every black barrister I know has told me that they’ve experienced something similar. From junior barristers like me, to QCs.
It makes us feel like imposters.
I’ve had so many white colleagues admit it’s NEVER happened to them.
This is systemic. Change is needed.
Thank you so much to everyone who has written a super supportive message. It makes me feel hopeful about change and glad that there are so many people who are fed up of this nonsense too. ❤️
Also, I have made a formal complaint, thank you to everyone who encouraged that x
Why have so many British people been expressing sadness about a 96 year old monarch’s death but have been absolutely silent about the death of an unarmed 24-year-old man, shot by a police officer? 🥺
Chris Kaba. Rest in peace. 🕊
His family deserve justice.
#ChrisKaba
New headshot. This is my favourite photo. I love it. I no longer straighten my hair for professional headshots. I want little girls with curly hair to love their hair and I don’t want them to damage it for years like I did. 👩🏽🦱
Judges need to stop shouting at counsel. We don’t go to work to be shouted at. No one should.
What’s even more frustrating is when you notice judges who are keen to shout at young females but not older males.
It’s workplace bullying.
Honestly it really does mean so much to be doing something like this with
@CBeebiesHQ
This might be the first time many little children will see a barrister/ lawyer 🥺
This is how we change perceptions.
Thank you so much to
@gold_wala
for the brilliant filming x
Hurting Oxbridge? LOL this is funny.
It must be tough knowing it’s becoming harder to buy your way into Oxbridge.
LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that we’re shaking up the class system.
All my state-school people, stand up 🙌🏽
In our courtroom today we have a black judge, a black clerk, a black usher, a black prosecutor & me.
I know this is only one courtroom in the whole country but it’s INCREDIBLE! 👩🏽⚖️🧑🏾⚖️👨🏿⚖️
I’d also like to add that these experiences make me appreciate how difficult it is for defendants appearing in court too. NOBODY should be treated disrespectfully, professional or lay person. It’s never appropriate to shout someone out of a courtroom. Court is stressful enough.
It’s actually exhausting calling racism out by the way.
I know I have a platform and I try to use it to help others as much as I can... but it’s tiring.
Why are people so unkind?
Why are we STILL struggling to be seen as equals?
I’m taking a break. Hope to be back soon x
I know a lot of journalists are trying to contact me and I really appreciate everyone trying to raise awareness. I think the replies and comments from my black colleagues and other black professionals highlights how much of a problem this is.
I’ve started receiving the expected racist hate mail at my place of work.
Could you save my clerks the time and email idonotcareaboutyourracistviews
@gmail
.com and someone will definitely not get back to you.
🙏🏽
I am disgusted that
@England
players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media.
It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable.
We need to stop glamourising overworking. It’s so important to look after our physical and mental health. Let’s make sure to spend time with the ones we love. ❤️
I couldn’t be prouder of my partner who’s an NHS doctor in ICU. Tonight he starts his third night shift in a row (having worked Christmas Day & Boxing Day).
Doctors, nurses and NHS staff are working so hard to save our country. I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you all ❤️
I'VE PASSED THE NY BAR (with a score high enough for admission to ALL states that accept the Uniform Bar Exam)! 🇺🇸
Imposter syndrome still hits me sometimes but I really have done it. Woah. Girls.
I am over the moon. This Essex girl is taking on America!
Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school. Teach law in school.

My absolute queen, Nanny Jan, has sadly passed away. She always supported me. Made me believe everything was possible. Told everyone who would listen about how proud she was… and honestly I couldn’t be prouder to be her granddaughter. The world was so lucky to have her. ❤️🥺
I am SO EXCITED that in just 6 weeks I will be moving to NYC for 9 months to pursue an LLM at
@ColumbiaLaw
& so grateful to have been awarded the Morris Fellowship!
Still pinching myself having received offers from 4 Ivy League universities - Columbia, Harvard, Penn and Cornell!
“Nouveau riche” really isn’t the criticism that this person hoped it’d be… yes, I earn my money & I’m proud of that 🥰
I wish this person a lot more positivity in their life, to distract them from their hobby of sending these sorts of messages to strangers on the internet x
I’m embarrassed to be in the same profession as someone like this. 🥺
The truth is, he should be embarrassed. This tweet has remained up for 5 days and still hasn’t been deleted.
Stroppy? For wanting to go to school with her natural hair?
HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
I just want to say a particular thank you to my dad on the first day of
#bhm
He has always supported me in everything I do and has been an amazing role model throughout my life.
I’m actually SO HAPPY.
Can we take a minute to appreciate that America also has a MIXED BLACK AND ASIAN FEMALE VICE PRESIDENT.
🇺🇸 🇮🇳 🇯🇲
Bye-den Trump. Hurry up and pack pls x
And sometimes, when things get tough, I get *little* reminders of why I’m doing what I’m doing ❤️ - thank you.
(permission kindly given by this little girl’s mother for me to share this photo on social media)
@CBeebiesHQ
Please keep looking out for Richard Okorogheye - he has been missing since 22 March and was last seen in the early hours of the 23 March near where I grew up in Loughton.
He has sickle cell and could get quite unwell without his medication. He’s only 19.
Please share ❤️
11 years in the making... tomorrow my pupillage ends and I finally qualify.
I am apparently not what many people picture a barrister to be and am not from a ‘traditional’ background, but I did it. I am here taking up space. I Am a Barrister.

Sharing some personal news… this Essex barrister (and now NY attorney) is spending the rest of her life with the funniest, kindest, most generous & impressive person she’s ever met… and he also happens to also be a brilliant head and neck surgeon. 😅🫶🏽

PINCHING MYSELF
I can finally share this very exciting news! 🥳
I’M WRITING A NOVEL 📚
It’s been SO hard to keep quiet about this over the past few months.

My little brother just sent me this and honestly, as an author, there is something absolutely bloody amazing about seeing people read your book on the train. I just can’t explain it.
Thank you always to everyone who has read my story (on trains or not) ❤️
Author, Barrister & Campaigner 🖤
...Someone said the other day that I’m an “influencer”. 😳
BUT I’ve thought about it... if I can influence people to work hard, pursue their dream and fight for justice then that truly is a wonderful thing.
What a privilege.
🖤
I am SO EXCITED to share that I’ve written a book that will be published in September 2020! 👩🏽⚖️ 📚
I’m so grateful to everyone around me for their love and support❤️
We’re delighted to announce that we will be publishing ‘In Black and White by
@essexbarrister
this September. This compelling memoir tells of a young barrister’s experience of race & class in a broken criminal justice system still dominated by the elite. Pre-order your copy now!
Popped into chambers this week to find the sweetest card with photos of a client I represented this year, who was acquitted. The photos were of him just enjoying life! He thanked me for helping him get his life back. I can’t lie, I shed a tear.
This job can be so rewarding 🥺❤️
I’ll never forget a senior, white, male barrister telling me that the black community are “good for business” because they “keep killing each other.”
This is just one of many reasons as to why we need more diversity at all levels of this profession.
My portrait by the incredible
@jakegreenstudio
has been selected as one of the winners of the Portrait of Britain award which will feature in a book and on outdoor displays across England throughout January!
I’ve been pinching myself every time I’m sent one of these pics 🌟🙏🏽
The police ‘stop and search’ black boys more than anyone else but they failed to stop and SEARCH for a vulnerable young black boy when his mum begged them to.
I can’t stop thinking about Richard and his grieving mother.
The police failed her.
#RichardOkorogheye
Apparently I “look and sound like a young chav criminal”.
I try to ignore the stupid comments but this one proves every point I’ve been making without even trying.
@EssexBarrister
You looked and sounded like a young chav criminal on the bbc, if you turn up to court looking like that you will be mistaken for that, nothing to do with race, I’m guessing mum was a labour activist
Devastating that we all knew that social media would be full of racist comments after that game.
I’ve seen monkey emojis, people telling players to “go back” to another country, and use of the n-word.
Rashford, Sancho & Saka… we’re all still so proud of you. ❤️🏴
Today I graduate
@ColumbiaLaw
with all A grades but MUCH more importantly, having had the best year of my life.
Oxbridge ✔️
Bar of England and Wales ✔️
Ivy League ✔️
Next up, the New York Bar exams…
Excited for the next chapter!
"The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a woman's life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself."
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
A member of the royal family had concerns about how dark Archie’s skin might be.
And our taxes are paying for the royal family...
It makes my skin crawl.
Feeling very blessed this year BUT feeling even more blessed that Boris Johnson scheduled the lockdown two days AFTER my birthday. Clearly my trip to Downing Street made an impression and he wanted me to enjoy my birthday 😅
Grateful for the lessons and successes of this year ❤️
My brother has been doing a trial shift (unpaid) every day for the last few weeks at different bars/restaurants and keeps getting knocked back and told that there are almost 1000 applicants for every job he is going for.
It’s so exploitative to not pay people for trial shifts!
The Bar needs to be as diverse as the people we represent.
Last year I tweeted: ‘THIS is what a barrister looks like.’
I was a few months away from representing my own clients. My message remains the same.
THIS IS WHAT A BARRISTER LOOKS LIKE.

For all of those people who claim that this sort of thing doesn’t happen...
In the US there are cameras in the courtroom.
The world needs to stop criminalising black people. We all have work to do.
This isn’t a debate. I’ve turned off the comments.
Usually POC are profiled because they "fit a description" ... Jaaye Person-Lynn did NOT fit the description (aka stereotype) of a lawyer. Kicked out of court, tased, tackled AND arrested because officers did not believe Jaaye was a lawyer. There are 2 justice systems in America!!
If you haven’t seen it yet, I’ll be mentoring 10 aspiring barristers in 2021 🥰
Mentors helped me so much and I am so excited to help others ❤️
Applications are open until 3rd Jan and more details can be found in the pictures below & on my Instagram page.
I used to be intimidated by grand, old buildings with paintings of only white men on the walls. I thought I was taking up space in an environment that wasn’t mine.
I’m creating space for every woman, black person and those who feel they don’t ‘belong’. THIS IS OUR SPACE TOO.❤️
I used to silently moan about ‘networking’ events but, right now, the things I would do to be holding a glass of wine and wandering between conversations so that I can sneakily eat half the canapés... 😅
The pandemic has me missing networking😭 it’s official... I’m losing it.
It’s hard not to feel emotional about the fact that
@MarcusRashford
- a 22 year old footballer - is working tirelessly to ensure that young people are able to eat this winter.
The government have failed so many children and families 😢
I love fashion almost as much as I love law and I can’t let the day go by without sharing how AMAZING
@MichelleObama
looked today.
Her outfit is by a Black designer, Sergio Hudson. She just epitomises class.
Michelle is who I want to be when I grow up. ❤️
The judge today, in granting my client a “defendant’s costs order” explained that even though he was acquitted, he might not get ALL of his money back and said “have you read the secret barrister‘s barrister’s book? It explains this very well and you should.”
@BarristerSecret
I, like many others, am disappointed with the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling on
#ShamimaBegum
This has nothing to do with her as an individual or her beliefs, which (of course) I do not agree with.
BUT imo the importance of a fair trial & human rights have been undermined.
We won’t have real justice until police stop killing Black people.
We won’t have real justice until Black people can feel safe:
- sleeping in their beds
- leaving a shop
- jogging
- walking down the street
...and every other thing that is taken for granted by many every day.
In personal news... I’ve officially moved out of my family home - I’m growing up! 🏡
I’m no longer living in Essex but will forever be ‘essexbarrister’
You can take the girl out of Essex but you can’t take the Essex out of the girl (and this is a BRILLIANT thing) 🤩
In much more positive news, I had some really nice post waiting for me at chambers:
The Woman of the Year Award
@PRECIOUS_Awards
Thank you so much. This was a lovely surprise and I’m still feeling very honoured. ❤️
Seriously HOW do people enjoy running?
For me there’s three stages:
Stage 1: dread the run
Stage 2: run and feel like you’re dying and want to stop
Stage 3: thank God that the run is over.
Please tell me how to enjoy it 😭

‘What a Barrister Looks Like’: A Young Black Woman Paves the Way - The New York Times
I was interviewed today and asked whether I think my friend who was murdered would be proud. I hope so. His life is such a big part of my story, which I hope will live on when we’re gone. I hope I’ve made you proud. This joy today, it’s for you. I know you’re up there watching.🧡
Sometimes I complain about the long commutes in this job, today it took me 4 hours to get to court and I suspect the return journey will be similar BUT eating fish & chips on a beach at Friday lunchtime... what a TREAT 😍
In my first term at Columbia law school I’m being taught by not one, but two Black Professors.
In England, throughout my whole undergraduate and post-graduate education… I wasn’t taught by a single Black Professor.
Just wow. 🥹
Law should be taught in all schools.
Ignorance of the law isn’t a defence but we don’t educate people about the law!?
Absolutely love that authors & bloggers like
@BarristerSecret
@Barristerblog
educate the public, but how is this responsibility falling on so few people? 😶
