Inside the Senate chamber, it's hard to overstate just how dramatic Murkowski's "no" vote was. She barely moved her mouth or made a sound. She kept her head down after she voted. The gravity of that moment did not seem lost on her.
The Capitol has literally been breached. These people did not go through security or mags. We have no idea who these people are and what they might have on their bodies. This is frightening to watch. Please stay safe everyone.
Correct.
@TGowdySC
was a HUGE believer in closed-door briefings and hearings, arguing it helped members ask better questions without the temptation of showboating before the TV cameras.
As GOP members rebel against closed-door testimony in Trump impeachment inquiry, a few years ago GOP argued its the only way to go when seeking truth.
The final Benghazi Report:
Jim Jordan flipped "no" votes for his Speaker bid with promises to shepherd a farm bill over the finish line -- even tho he has never voted for one in his 15-year congressional career

Mark Sanford, a Republican who served as a South Carolina congressman and governor, says he is considering challenging President Trump in 2020.

In a letter to the editor to the Wall Street Journal,
@SenatorTimScott
writes: "We should stop bringing candidates with questionable track records on race before the full Senate for a vote."
Undecided Dem Sen Manchin tells reporters he has been "thrown out" of the room where he'd been reading the only copy of the FBI report because it was the "Republicans' turn" to read it. He says he has to come back tomorrow to finish, then will make a decision on Kavanaugh.
Schumer just said at the mics that Pompeo et al walked out of the Iran briefing when the questions from senators got too hard and wants them to come back

@SenatorTimScott
met with Thomas Farr today. He still opposes his nomination, and had some sharp words for the 31 conservatives who sent him a letter yesterday telling him he shouldn't cooperate with the liberal smear campaign calling Farr a racist:
I covered the South Carolina delegation for nearly four and a half years and I am STUNNED by
@TomRiceSC7

This is a thread to introduce Lowell, named for my late Grandma Lee w/ bonus special meaning to

NEW: Mick Mulvaney has been appealing to the administration for a tariff exclusion to save a television assembly plant in his old Congressional district:
ME: Hi, is so and so available?
HER: Yes, he sure is! May I ask who is calling?
ME: Emma Dumain with McClatchy.
HER: (without pausing) He is actually out of the office at a meeting right now.
When you're talking to a senator and he wants to keep talking to you but the cops said you can't talk in the middle of the hallway so you have to step behind a rope in order to continue the conversation. This is how ludicrous these restrictions are.
.
@LindseyGrahamSC
is a senator of habit when it comes to his walking routes to and from the floor, and he rarely rebuffs reporters on either side. Today, he has been rushing in and out of votes and taking a different route between the chamber and his office. (eyeballs emoji here)
What does the sergeant at arms say about Rand Paul reportedly having a press conference when he is supposed to be in his seat at the trial on pain of imprisonment?
.
@LindseyGrahamSC
declares defeat. After weeks of trying to strike a deal to end the shutdown, he tells reporters he's giving up. Not scheduling any more talks or meetings. "We're stuck...i don't know what else to do."
Yes, that's Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), Haaland's counterpart on the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. QUITE an endorsement:
"As Secretary of the Interior, [Rep. Haaland] would not only make history as the first Native American to serve in the role, but would pour her passion into the job every single day," says Rep. Young (R - Alaska) also touting the Congresswoman's ability to work across the aisle.
There is something fundamentally wrong w/ this argument, which implies that men shouldn't be alone w/ women who aren't their spouses on the assumption that it's human nature for men to molest, or women to lie about being molested, respectively.
Something I have learned:
If you are a Republican nominee for President – or President – you will be accused of being a racist.
John Lewis compared John McCain’s campaign to being like that of George Wallace.
It comes with the territory unfortunately.

There were so many articles in 2020 about how hard it was to be a parent during the pandemic. Guess what? It's still hard. Many of us are constantly making agonizing choices about how to keep our kids safe, especially those under 5 without the vaccine. 1/2
Woah,
@GOPLeader
is going after
@WhipClyburn
hard on the floor, talking about how he plays politics very well in getting Joe Biden the nomination for president and now he's going to bring politics to the Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis.
This is cool:
@RepBarbaraLee
is telling MSNBC that she is wearing Shirley Chisolm's pearls today. Chisolm inspired Lee to get into politics; Lee was one of Harris's earliest champions on the Hill; women are wearing pearls today in solidarity with Harris.
Oh boy, Haaland is having to answer for her tweets now. Barraso asks her to explain why she tweeted that Republicans don't believe in science. Haaland says that if Republicans are doctors, like Barrasso, she has to assume they believe in science.

I'm not in a position to psychoanalyze Graham -- or anyone. But his obsession with these two votes, and him bringing them up constantly, suggests to me he's deeply hurt that he took a risk years back and Dems won't extend the same courtesy.

One last thing: if you get ME sick, I bring that home to my kid. And I'm double vaxxed + boosted. Oh, and pregnant. And instead of some people wanting to protect the vulnerable, the message I receive is stay home til the world gets its shit together. There has to be a better way.
And all these people who say "oh if you don't want to get vaccinated and you get sick whatever, it's your fault," forget that there are vulnerable kids out there who would be vaccinated if they could. It absolutely makes my blood boil.

FWIW Sen. Whitehouse just said Schumer is telling Senate Dems they have about a week to negotiate things back in or out of the reconciliation framework released today
Susan Collins, seated next to Murkowski, eventually leaned over to talk to her. The two shared a moment where they talked quietly and laughed. Collins will announce her decision on the final confirmation vote at 3.
On impeachment,

tonight said publicly he supports voting on impeachment articles AND expressed a preference that those articles should include Mueller report findings regarding obstruction of justice
As a South Carolina reporter, whenever I think of John McCain I think of his best friend Lindsey Graham. Here's the story of how they became friends, which I've heard told to me. And then there's the video, which will break your heart.
He keeps talking about how he voted for Sotomayor and Kagan, Democratic nominees for SCOTUS. For him, that Dems wouldn't consider voting for Kavanaugh prior to the allegations wasn't just a matter of fairness, ie one should be able to put aside party and vote for a qualified nom.
I think that's basically right, though I also think there are a number of Republicans in the "let's quietly move on from this" group who are sympathetic to the Republicans in the "voted to impeach Trump" group
Basically, I think the real rift in the House GOP is between the "remove Liz Cheney from leadership!" group and the "please can we quietly move on from all of this" group — not the "remove Liz Cheney from leadership!" group and the "I voted to impeach Donald Trump" group
5) FINALLY, on transmission: THERE WILL BE A TRANSMISSION COMPONENT IN THIS AGREEMENT to benefit renewable energy projects, per source familiar with negotiations. But TBD on what that will look like.
