A former coal mine in the Alberta Rockies is releasing a toxic contaminant at rates dozens of times higher than guidelines, another periodically disgorges water so iron-heavy it stains local creeks orange, says research by provincial govt scientists

The paper, in the journal Environmental Pollution, says coal mining in the Crowsnest watershed has been impacting ecosystems downstream for decades. The study includes Grassy Mountain - which is seeing a push for redevelopment

Wild also that the study was done by Alberta gvt scientists. Two of them still work there, but the gvt wouldn't let the reporter speak to them. The third author now works in the US and "said he wouldnβt talk about his research for fear of legal reprisal from the province"

Again, does the AER actually do anything? Did the AER discover this, nope. Leaks at the Oil Sands tailing ponds, nope. Massive air quality problems at the Oil Sands, nope. The AER is the government's idea of cutting the red tape and screwing Albertans for corporate profits.
@EmmaLGraney
Ask anyone with a well if they have iron staining. That's just how it is here in the iron rich rocky mountains. Stick to baking pies grandma.
@EmmaLGraney
Fret not! The unit those government scientists belong to will soon mysteriously disappear and personnel either reallocated to other projects or absent the government directory entirely!
Such stewards of the public good these UCP folks are...

Cons hate welfare for people but love oil/gas/coal industry welfare scams.
Smith proposes taxpayers pay for coal mine cleanups so 4 mines can mine new coal.
Her Oil industry got $500M from Feds to clean up orphan wells. ππ€£π they pocketed it - zero wells done.
