This is not what World Book Day should be about. Why is the underlying message being taken over by expensive fancy dress? Let’s take it back to the real meaning - promoting a love of books and stories and the magical world they can open up for children of all ages.
#worldbookday
I experienced quite a scary train journey home this evening. Please know that if you’re in this position, you can get a quick, reassuring response by texting 61016. No one should have to feel intimidated and scared on public transport. Please spread the message.
On Thursday our lives changed forever. We’re now learning to live with diabetes after my daughter was rushed to hospital with diabetes ketoacidosis. The care and kindness we have received has been incredible. We have so much to thank the NHS for. 💙🌈
@GavinWilliamson
This is a joke, right?! You should be ashamed of yourself. The rage I feel as a parent right now is real. Real anger. Real disappointment. Real disillusionment with the system. Don’t congratulate my child.
What a day for children in Scotland. At the SNP conference, delegates voted overwhelmingly to increase the school starting age. Not only that but also to introduce kindergarten provision for ages 3-6, focused on play & relationships. Well done,
@UpstartScot

Does anyone have an ‘informal’ mentor for their PhD? Someone who you can just have a moan to or can give you a boost, away from the more formal academic role of the supervisor?

@K8ebarker
I really think it needs to come from the schools and settings too. Keep it simple - share stories, dress in pyjamas for bedtime stories and have a day that celebrates reading without the need for costumes.
@HJHaygarth
Totally agree. We should absolutely not be putting pressure on families to buy meaningless costumes. Think how many books could be bought from a charity shop instead!
Cue thousands of teachers, practitioners, TAs, childminders, SENCOs, caretakers, lunchtime supervisors, managers & everyone else in between having a panicked and stressful end to the holidays. For many, the thought of returning will be absolutely terrifying.

I’ve just seen a set up on Facebook of a Gruffalo created entirely of coloured rice. How can we still think this is OK? It will last seconds so what is the pedagogy that underpins this? Not to mention the frivolous waste of food!

There has been very little, if any, discussion about nurseries & preschools in terms of delayed reopening. Social distancing is impossible & close contact necessary, not just for personal care but for warm attachments children need developmentally.

I’m writing an article on the benefits of Twitter for professional development and would love to hear your thoughts please. Do you value Twitter as a form of CPD? How has using Twitter impacted on your practice? Thank you.

A huge shout out to all the nursery and preschool leaders and practitioners who have negotiated a challenging half term. New policies, procedures, risk assessments and changes to provision have been introduced, making for a very different way of working. Now time for a breather.
Thank you to everyone for the help and support last night. We arrived in London at about 1:30am. Amy is very poorly but hopefully the IV insulin starts to work soon and we can get back home 💙

I’m going to say it…
I have major issues with food being used for play. A quick scroll through Instagram and I’ve seen tuff spots featuring Weetabix, spaghetti, cornflakes, oats, rice and lentils as well as fruit and vegetables used for printing. 1/2
‘A language rich environment is a chatty environment. An environment where children get to have conversations with adults’. It is not laminated words everywhere!
@PhilMinns
#ofstedbigconversation
Something pretty special happened today and I’d like to share it with you. This morning I was teaching about communication and language development. As part of this, we were considering factors which can inhibit children’s communication….
Today marks the end of my first six weeks as a lecturer. In this time, I’ve felt valued, supported, appreciated and made to feel like I’m good at my job. What an absolute privilege.
I enjoy what I do but that doesn’t mean I’m not desperate for the Christmas holidays. It’s been the toughest of years and we all need time to rest, recuperate and recharge. Let’s hope the next two weeks pass safely for us all.

It’s taught me a very important lesson about communication and how we shouldn’t assume verbal communication works for all. Yes, tech can be a barrier but it can also be a lifeline for some. Our interaction has really changed my perspective. Thank you, Avril.
If you’re interested in Early Years environments then you might find Alan Car’s Design Challenge a good watch tonight. They’re redesigning nursery environments - babies, toddlers and preschoolers. I wonder what they’ll come up with…
I have two wonderful books by Mike Smith to give away. To be in with a chance….

I'm looking for participants who are employed or volunteer in the Early Years sector to respond to my questionnaire. This is to generate data for my Masters dissertation on the use of Twitter as a tool for CPD. Thank you.
Question... if tests are not available for under 5s what will your procedure be for suspected cases? Isolate the whole bubble even though COVID-19 has not been confirmed?!

My first semester as a lecturer completed. It took a lot of courage to make the leap but really was the best decision. I’m so excited for what’s to come ☺️
It makes me think of all those who must look on, knowing they don’t have enough money to put food on the table. Is it morally right to be wasteful with food at the moment? Surely it’s time to use alternatives during a cost of living crisis. 2/2
As we approach the end of term, it’s important to be aware of how you’re feeling. The run up to Christmas can be a tiring and stressful time.

I’ve discovered the beautiful wordless picture book, ‘Island’ and it’s blown me away. The illustrations are absolutely stunning. Definitely one to share across year groups.

I’m so very proud of my lovely friend,
@Eyfs4M
on her forthcoming book release. She really is a SEND expert and an all round great person. Look out for it!
It’s been a rough few weeks as I’ve been preparing for my PhD annual progress review, including the submission of my literature review. I wanted to give up at one stage but thankfully my wonderful supervisor talked me out of it. Now it’s time to catch up on sleep!

Two years as a type 1 diabetic 💙
It’s not a day we celebrate but we do take a moment to remember how far she’s come and how lucky she is to still be here. Things looked very different 2 years ago.
We’re thankful for insulin, diabetes tech and Haribo Tangfastics for the hypos!
