The whole complimenting thing aside, Chen is just an incredible artist and a wonderful person. A global superstar handing out carefully made breakfast boxes to his fans at 8am on a cold November morning. So happy I managed to tell him this was his best album yet during my turn.
You know, I was feeling bad for blocking the view of people at the prerec, but after seeing they turned off their lightsticks during Chen's stage, I'll make sure they see nothing anymore.
That ridiculous 'staff' comment might be believable if no one else had met any EXO member. Genuinely never came across more approachable celebrities, and while I didn't get to meet B yet, Chen and Xiumin were incredibly kind to everyone both on- and off- camera.
I got to hear the whole thing now:
CHEN: "Oh hi! We meet again, the tall friend! So handsome!"
ME: "Chen is more handsome!"
CHEN: "I don't feel good when you say things like this!" (said in a way that means he obviously loves it)
I realized 2 things after today's EXO prerec: 1) their music styles, vocals, and continued experimentation with production encapsulate what got me into Korean music, and 2) I'm not built for 9hr+ recordings. Try not to spoil the concert too much for yourself- it's worth the wait.
Well this morning was eventful!
Chen: "Oh! Hello!" *waves at me* "He's really good looking!"
Me: "Chen is more handsome!"
Chen: "It's so good to hear someone good looking calling me good looking".
Thanks
@cheneunim
for the video ^^
My worlds colliding in the best way possible. I've followed AKMU almost as long as EXO, and I hoped they'd come together at some point. This exceeded expectations though! I need D.O. to start a YT cover channel, or just put out more music, starting with an official AKMU collab.
It's incredible how many accounts suddenly become experts on Korean military law, evasion/deferment policies, etc., all without of course being able to read the documents or having private insights. I get being invested, but to claim authority with limited info is just nonsense
So, one of my hobbies is drawing, and since I'm moving I have a bunch of drawings I have to leave behind. Given that I know a lot of EXO fans are following me, if someone living in Seoul wants either of these two A3 drawings (in a frame) let me know in DM.
Reflecting back on the awesome k-pop moments I've had for the past 2 years! Thanks to
@hello82official
I've been able to hear D.O.'s Si Fueras Mia first, drink with Xiumin, and play games with Wonho. Plus, I managed to attend Chen's and EXO's prerecs. Let's see what 2023 brings!
Guess whose lightstick is the one high up in the bottom-right corner! I'm posting the JTBC link for those who couldn't find Chen's original K909. He recorded IDEM in one incredible take!
To all the people who decided to follow me after the video, thank you, but you may find my feed boring, since I mainly tweet about language and culture. That being said, I'm OT9, and Minseok hyeong was one of the nicest people I met so far.
#기대 is one of those albums that nourishes the soul - an extended love letter of sorts, and it's just so much like D.O. To me, Ordinary Days sums it up best - it's simple, beautiful, nostalgic, and it makes you smile.
After several listenings, I am happy to confirm this household will be exclusively playing Cream Soda, Private Party, Cinderella, and the last 20 seconds of Another Day for the foreseeable future. Apologies to neighbors.
#EXO_EXIST
This song and video are just so fun! And the line distribution was refreshing - reminds you how great everyone's vocals are! Also, really craving donuts right about now

From today I can put that little title in front my name. Dr. Eldin Milak. Feels weird to write, even weirder to think I'm done. So many people to thank, but I will do that in due time. Today, just rest and celebrate.
For the past few years, I've been more directly involved with Korean entertainment and particularly the world of K-pop. The main takeaway from my limited experience working with idols/companies: the job is very difficult, and the mental/physical demands are excessive.
Visited the Kwangya store for the first time. Not much to say about it. This futuristic minimalism thing SM is pursuing is really not working. The COEX store was infinitely more entertaining and actually worth a visit even if you don't buy anything.
Finally got to see it! This was intense, and the acting and special effects were just superb. Kyungsoo has outdone himself, although I really need him to do a light, breezy movie for a change.
I've heard a lot about the struggles of the Korean military service, but how is it that these guys come our fresher, healthier, and younger looking than when they enlisted? Like, my Korean friends too-post military pics are literal glow ups. Perks of regimented lifestyles I guess
Watching Kyungsoo's 생파 online made me realize I really left Korea. I know I'll be going back a few times this year, but still, a very odd feeling. Hope everyone there had a blast! I'm happy we got to hear 'I'm gonna love you' live!
What intrigues me about K-music as a linguist is its ability to garner a global audience with minimum recourse to English. So here's my questions for non-Korean speaking fans: what made you like K-music? How do you connect to songs? Do you check lyrics? Are you learning Korean?
A nostalgic island for a nostalgic song and MV. Just can't get over how well EXO and Jeju fit together. Btw, the rock in the MV is black because Jeju is a volcanic island. Here's my pic of the crater on top of Halla-san. Totally worth the 11-hour hike, which I now want to repeat
I'm dropping the 'VS'.
Sidenote, having seen the first performed live 4 times in a row from a close distance, really raised my standards for what constitutes good dancing/performance.
To answer my own qs: while the production of K-music is what appeals to me most, it's the lyrics that made me explore and eventually helped me learn the language. Bonus, my top 5 fav song lyrics: Epik High-In Seoul, iKON-Hug me, EXO-Lights out, B.I.-Illa Illa, AKMU-Melted.
Calling EXO-Ls!

A home and video shot of the most cumbersome platter I ever had to make. When Bosnian 'meza' [안주] meets K-pop. Woke up at 7am to make this, but was so worth it!
Btw, people seem to think I'm directing this at specific fandoms. I'm not. This is a general comment. As I said, investment aside, if you want to take a stance of authority on Korean topics, then engage with the language, history, legislation etc. In short, come do Korean studies
I do think that to fully appreciate it, you need to either understand Korean, or follow the lyrics (although that, to me, still limits the impact). The narrative of this album is as important as the voice and the production.
There's passion, hard work, and a lot of personal sacrifice invested in what shows up on the screen, and while thinking about it does ruin the immersive illusion a bit, it is important to keep in mind when consuming the content.
So while I continue to enjoy the final products in the form of polished stage performances and (music) videos, knowing some of what goes on behind the scenes makes me admire the humans holding up the industry. From idols to PDs, editors, and other staff members, to actual fans.
Finally the whole team is here-or the closest we got to it in years! First Snow will never get old. Also, note how Kai is sitting-they had to correct him for each shot cause he was moving. Also, we could barely hear D.O. in breaks bc he didn't hold the mic properly

So happy to announce that I am this year's recipient of Korea Foundation's Postdoctoral Fellowship. I will be working at the Korea Research Center of Western Australia with the amazing
@manmadebeautif1
and her incredible team!
Another morning, another one of those headlines your read and reread in an effort to make sense of it...but it doesn't, and it won't. Rest in peace, Moonbin. You will be incredibly missed.
My drinking buddy is on! I got to hear a sneak peak Brand New during a game we played, and I instantly knew it's gonna be one of my favorite songs of the year. It's still a crime they moved him from the Snowflake set. Get it XIUMIN 형!
#SMCUwithEXO
Listen, I'd buy a whole Suho-SC album, just saying! Also, you don't understand how hype Rodeo Station got. We repeated it 4 times, but it never got less energetic.

I have mixed feelings about the tourist practice of renting/wearing hanbok in Korean palaces, but a while ago I got this beautiful durumagi as a gift, and I felt bad keeping it in storage. So here it is. Late fall in Changdeok Palace.
I've been getting some great responses! The general consensus: as long as the music is good, the lyrics don't matter. All the more incentive to think of the non-linguistic elements of culture.
Two shelves of important, creative, groundbreaking, and experimental work. One just happens to be classified as 'academic' and the other as 'popular', whatever those categories are supposed to mean.
I had flasbacks to 성산일출봉 last March, and the black rock landscape you only find in Jeju. Going through my album while listening to the song and realizing how well it fits the island.
Had the pleasure of guest lecturing at Monash today! I talked about the concept of the Junian Tetrad, in relation to Korean script nationalism. Kinda sad it didn't fall exactly on 한글날, but hey, close enough.
Well they've officially found their home! Thanks everyone for your nice comments. You've been too nice - I don't draw as much as I used to, and I see many things here in need of fixing, but I hope the next person who gets them will enjoy them. After all, the models are great.
Accurate depiction of my PhD defense committee reading my thesis. One of the profs kept writing 'why' in the margins until the examples in the discussion section showed up. Trust the process people! Not everything can be written on page 1.
@Juliss_place
It was great! You could see he practiced the dancing a lot, and the singing was immaculate, as always. I'm hoping for a 2nd album - for some reason I think it'll be coming sooner than we think.
Next linguistic/semiotic question: can you read Hangul? If yes, how long did it take you to learn it? For me, Hangul was pretty much my only resource when I first came to Korea (aside from some basic vocab), and it took me surprisingly far, thanks to various cognates.
This 270+ pages monster has been checked and approved, which means now is the time to format it using the visually least pleasing layout I've ever seen. I love you SKKU, but you really have to step up your font game. Why does 'HYSinMyeong' not support the capital 'K' letter!?
First day with the amazing team at the Korea Research Centre

Looking forward to a year of research at
@CurtinUni
and a few trips along the way ^^
Also, just to clarify for commenters who think I am surprised by people enjoying music w/o understanding the language - I'm not. I'm the same. But the point is, K-music has gone global and mainstream (as has film, drama etc.), and I'm curious how that affects the language.
One reason I like reading comments on k-pop pages is cause of the hilarious takes on language/culture. This one about Song Joon-ki's British gf. It's fascinating how people conflate language with nationality/ethnicity. As if no one ever learned another language.
In case you're on Curtin campus this Wednesday, hope you can make it to 501.218 at 1pm! Presenting one of my first publications as part of the Social Science seminar series at MCASI!
A note to Korean cafés: if you are charging ₩5000 for a latte, please make sure you're not using light roast Arabica as the base. No matter how many pretty hearts you draw in the foam, it'll still taste terrible.
Screencap from a recent video call with Noam Chomsky for our upcoming volume with Routledge. I particularly enjoyed his stories of Roman Jakobson and his early PhD years. Whatever your opinion of Chomsky's theory may be, he is a brilliant and extremely forthcoming individual.
I'm loving Australia so far, but what's up with universities here using all these abbreviations and acronyms with no context. It feels like I've gone through the whole alphabet twice since this morning, and I have no idea what's what.
The fact that it is considered courageous to condemn a blatant act of ethnic cleansing tells you all you need to know about the state of the world. The past week has been devastating on multiple accounts - global, local, personal - and it's difficult to remain optimistic...
