As early as 1814, Alexandre Petion & Simon Bolivar were exchanging letters discussing anti-colonialism. With Bolivar's exile in 1815 following defeat, he formally requested help from the Republic of Haiti. Petion, although fresh off fighting Henri Christophe, was glad to help.
