I've started a page to post all of the articles I'll be writing on, and to keep you updated on the news from across Derbyshire, Give it a like. and don't hesitate to get in touch.
New figures:

UPDATE on coronavirus (
#COVID19

Manjeet Singh Riyat had a “rare gift”, was “compassionate” “kind” and “fiercely proud”
He leaves behind a wife and 2 sons
NEW:
Derbyshire Dales District Council will be run by a "progressive alliance" formed between the Liberal Democrats, Labour Party and Green Party
It has been under Conservative control for the vast majority of the past 50 years but Lib Dems now the largest party after elections
A Freedom of Information request shows that Derbyshire County Council last year spent £40.5K on barristers to fight 19 tribunals. These tribunals involved parents trying to secure sufficient support for their children who have special educational needs and disabilities.
Delighted and overwhelmed to have won the best use of multimedia award, highly commended in LDR of the year and highly commended in the best use of FOI at the 2022 Local Democracy Reporting Service Awards
Shout out to all my brilliant LDR colleagues 👏🗒
March 5 marked my five-year anniversary as a Local Democracy Reporter. I'm proud to have been among the first wave of LDRs and now one of the last "OGs" left. It's a real privilege, now more than ever, to shine vital light on Derbyshire's local government and NHS.
Now, onward.
Absolutely thrilled to have won the best of use of multimedia/broadcast award and to get runner-up in best use of FOI at the LDR Awards
I'm so proud to be an LDR and to have such brilliant colleagues - congrats to all the other winners and nominees
The mortality rate has increased sharply again from 1.8% to 2.5%.
Increase in cases is just over 20% - much lower than yesterday's 43%.
Total confirmed UK cases 1,372.
Though only those in hospitals now being tested.
This is huge. So many councils have helped to fund Thurrock Council's investment portfolio over the years.
As of a report this week, the Derbyshire Pension Fund, overseen by the county council, has £30 million invested in Thurrock Council
UPDATE:
@luhc
announces intervention at Thurrock Council "in response to grave concerns about the exceptional level of financial risk and debt incurred by the Council"
Pretty chuffed to say I've been shortlisted for specialist journalist of the year
@RegPressAwards
This is linked to my coverage of SEN support failures, a day spent at a city GP surgery and a council pursuing a land deal with a convicted drug dealer
Thrilled to have now received my LDRS awards, courtesy of
@yqshi
It's been another tough and turbulent year and this really was a much-needed pick-me-up
Time to celebrate 🥃
Pleased to have featured in and help contribute to last night's episode of
@BBCPanorama
on Britain's historic and current issues with landfills
It includes a look at the historic toxic landfills in Somercotes which I have written about for five years
Lots more on that to come
Proud to have been awarded runner up/highly commended for the best use of broadcast & multimedia
Even prouder of my fab Derbyshire colleague
@NSlater_DT
for winning that very same category
Hats off to all my brilliant LDR colleagues across the UK for all their stellar work ✊
NEW:
Derbyshire County Council has a £46M black hole in its budget and is ceasing all non-essential spending for the rest of the current financial year
Pins this on: Inflation, staff pay awards, demand for services
Already making £14M cuts this year & £300M over past 13 years
Duffield has officially gone green. Dave Wells has snatched the seat off the Conservatives. The authority now has three parties and an independent. Crikey.
Mr Riyat, aged 52, spearheaded Derby’s emergency department for the best part of two decades.
Colleagues say he was a “powerful advocate for the sickest patients” and “generations of families in this region have benefitted from the care he provided”.
📰🗞️ It's my two-year anniversary as the Local Democracy Reporter for Derbyshire today.
In that time I've written over 1,200 stories scrutinising the affairs and decision-making processes of the county's councils and NHS organisations.
Here's to another year! 🗞️📰

Thrilled to have had my first Covid-19 vaccine at Derby Arena today and great to have seen some familiar faces, too
Back in August for my second dose
Thanks to the army of staff and volunteers that have put in countless, exhausting hours to get us to this point

Off until after New Year. What a year it's been to report on and, let's face it, endure
It's been traumatic but has showcased the importance of public interest journalism. It is essential now more than ever and I'm glad to have played my part
Here's to a better 2021.
✍📰🎄🥳
Officially double-jabbed, wahoo! Thanks to all at Derby Arena and everyone in the Derbyshire NHS.
Now that crucial two-week wait to build immunity.
Take that, Covid.

I'm down at Midland House vaccination centre in Derby this morning.
There is currently no queue whatsoever and officials are encouraging walk-ins
Military personnel are on site assisting with the roll-out.
I’m at a hustings tonight in Long Eaton where the Erewash parliamentary candidates have been invited to share views on HS2, which would run through the borough.
Six out of seven candidates here, no sign of
@maggie_erewash
,
the Conservative candidate.
William Jones, chief operating officer
@DCHStrust
talks about the setting up of Derby Arena and that capacity will be ramped up over time. No strict figures on people being vaccinated per day.
There's lots more behind the immediate headline figure of Derbyshire County Council cutting its budget black hole from £46M to £33M, and of course none of it is in the council press release - this is why LDRs are so important
Honey and I have been out to vote for the new East Midlands Mayor and Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner and you should too!
It's a glorious (humid) day and it's a chance to have your say on your local representatives

The impact of the elections:
Amber: Con to Lab
Bolsover: NOC/Lab to Lab
Chesterfield: Lab to Lab
Dales: NOC/Con to NOC/LD
Derby: NOC/Con to NOC/Lab
Erewash: Con to Lab
High Peak: NOC/Lab to Lab
NED: Con to Lab
South Derbyshire: NOC/Lab to Lab
NOC=no overall control
HUGE moment for Derbyshire.
In under five months, more than half a million Derby and Derbyshire residents have now received their first Covid-19 doses - as of March 28.
62.85% of the entire population aged 16+
97.51% of the entire population aged 65+
👏👏👏👏👏
Derbyshire is leading the UK's response to the coronavirus pandemic with its vaccination programme, new figures have revealed.
More than 90 per cent of all Derbyshire residents in the top four priority Covid-19 vaccination groups have now had their jabs
It was a pleasure to talk to Leanne on Ward 305 at Royal Derby Hospital today. She has been in hospital with Covid for 7 days and has had a rough time of it
She is urging others, particularly those with underlying health issues, to get vaccinated
I walked Josh’s route to school with him and his mum. It is precarious, uneven and risky at best with high levels of fast traffic. It took Josh 26 minutes to get to school with hands-on support from mum. He was absolutely shattered, but still smiling.
And there we have it, the Green Party has gained its first ever county council seat, through Gez Kinsella in Duffield and Belper South, gaining the seat off the Tories by a significant margin of more than 700 votes. Tory Chris Short loses his seat.
Today's
@derbyshire_live
striking front page and accompanying story.
Thanks to

for setting up the interview, a great approach to open and transparent comms when it matters the most.

Fallout of the local elections in Derbyshire:
Of the 8 districts/boroughs and city (9 councils), Labour now either have control or are the largest party on 8 - all but the Derbyshire Dales
Before the election, Labour were in control or were the largest party on 4 councils
And here is that historic Green victory in Duffield. Beating their nearest rivals, the incumbent Conservatives, by double the amount of votes. Now three parties and an independent on the authority.
Just booked in for my first Covid-19 vaccine appointment at Derby Arena and I'm beyond hyped!
It's going to be great/surreal to go through the process that I've been covering from a news standpoint for months, and at a place where I've witnessed so many others getting their jabs
Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner result:
🟣 Russell Winston Armstrong - 32,944
🔵 Angelique Foster - 65,293
🟡 David Martin Hancock - 22,540
🔴 Nicolle Ndiweni - 93,260
Nicolle Ndiwen is elected as Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire
Spent yesterday getting back to basics, doorknocking for five hours+ without a break, most of it in the pouring rain
I knocked on more than 100 homes and chatting to more than 40 people (not a bad ratio)
Story to follow on all that in due course, but a short 🧵
Potentially “catastrophic” plans for more than 400 homes on the hillside above Matlock have been rejected after more than five years in limbo
It marks a major people power victory for

for setting this up, another great example of honest and transparent comms during the largest public health crisis for a generation.
Asked whether care home testing could have begun sooner, Prof Yvonne Doyle says the "scale and speed" of the epidemic has been seen "really in the last couple of weeks".
Right... 🙈
NEW:
The Conservative leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council has been suspended and resigned from his party after emails exposing a private agreement between him and a tourist attraction over a homeless Gypsy family were uncovered
Late to my own party... Yesterday was my one year anniversary as the local democracy reporter for Derbyshire. Apt that I spent most of it chugging through tea to try and recover from a marathon 12-hour+ shift the day before. 642 stories and counting... let’s go!

Despite

restrictions being stepped down across the UK on January 27, there will be NO change to restrictions across our hospitals.
We're still caring for incredibly poorly patients and we want to do everything we can to keep them safe.
Perhaps even more remarkable than other council shake-ups in Derbyshire is the dethroned of the Conservatives in the Derbyshire Dales
In power for all but four of the last 48 years, now no longer the largest party with the Lib Dems capitalising
Pleased my work on deprivation in Derby is being published soon. Do give it a read.
It's a subject close to my heart which I've endeavoured to take a real deep dive into.
I hope this series highlights what is a genuine issue and leads to critical and honest action.
This Sunday, we will release the first part of a four-part investigation into deprivation in the city.
Speaking with several key players, this investigation deals with a series of significant issues affecting the area.
Ethan Blackwell was alive for 32 hours after being born at Royal Derby Hospital with significant brain damage and failed organs which left him gasping for air and unable to open his eyes
An independent report found the hospital at fault
First council meeting in-person for more than a year, and my oh my do things look different
This is the scene at Alfreton Leisure Centre for a meeting of Amber Valley Borough Council
We're all sitting our GCSEs it seems!
The scale of the vaccine roll-out across the country is colossal, but at times, as with the team vaccinating housebound patients in the Swadlincote area, based at Oaklands Village, this scale boils down individual homes.

Pleased to see my story on Matlock "gate-gate" appear in The Mirror, Daily Express, Manchester Evening News, Wales Online, Daily Record and Derbyshire Times, along with my host title the Derby Telegraph
A great demonstration of the Local Democracy Reporting Service in action
A total of 15 babies were left with severe brain damage following “likely” or “possible” “substandard” care from the Derby and Burton hospital trust, a report details
It follows an eight-month FOI battle including the involvement of the ICO
Something which may need further scrutiny is the amount which the Prime Minister and Chancellor are said to have been fined - £50 apiece
The low-level Derbyshire lockdown party breaches I have covered involved initial fines of £200 - 4x the fines handed out to Johnson and Sunak
I'm at Ilkeston Town Hall tonight with a room full of councillors. All are wearing masks.
Can confirm it is a work gathering and NOT a party, with no cheese or wine in sight.
The notorious Snake Pass route through northern Derbyshire may remain closed for a month, though the county council says it is "too early to say when the road will reopen"
This is due to 3 landslips on the major route, with one section dropping by two metres, and is still moving
Welcome aboard matey, glad to have some company - and top-draw company at that!
Local authorities of Derbyshire have been put on notice 🗳
I'm no longer the sole Derbyshire local democracy reporter 🥳
Delighted to be joining Derbyshire's

team next month. Can't wait to get stuck in to important local political issues.
I've been very fortunate to do live blogs and cover breaking news for Derbyshire Live in the past few years - it has been an amazing experience.
I have this issue every election cycle and it needs repeating
Political parties/candidates: Reach out to local media ahead of and during the election to make your voice heard and provide contact details. If we can't reach you you're losing a valuable platform to speak to voters.
It was a frustrating process but was also reassuring to see the checks and balances in the system, through the ICO, back my public interest defence
Definitely a symptom of a wider one-size-fits-all approach from councils re public interest disclosure issues
New on HTFP today:

@EddieBisk
has warned local authorities against blocking Freedom of Information requests after winning a 10-month fight to name a councillor who had not paid his council tax.
A Conservative councillor says he would rather “s*** in his hands and clap” than vote to close a Derbyshire care home, among 11 which could be shut by his party’s administration
The community I spoke to have real concerns but are often disregarded as NIMBYs, those opposed to change, or even as conspiracy theorists
But their concerns and anxieties are based on reality and deserve to be heard
It continues to be a privilege to be a trusted local reporter
Hadn't spotted that my tale about residents not reporting drug crimes in affluent Melbourne, Derbs, due to fear of lowering house prices was used in the

- Erewash, Min for vaccines
@HeatherWheeler
- South Derbyshire, PS in Cab office & assistant whip
All were approached for comment
Yesterday saw 3K jabs given @ Midland House, it's busiest day so far, and the advice was to book for a slot to avoid overloading capacity & risk of missing out
However, today has seen a dip in demand & more staff were rallied in - so health officials are now encouraging walk-ins
Do you need a booster jab? Have you missed a 1st or 2nd jab so far? If you can get along to Midland House Covid Vaccination Centre in Nelson Street, Derby, DE1 2SA, now we currently have no queue and would love to see you! Just walk-in. Our brilliant team is ready to jab.
Derbyshire's council, health, police and fire chiefs have put out a joint statement asking tourists to "put off your visit until later in the year when Derbyshire will be fully open for business and will be able to welcome you properly".
I've spent the morning at Midland House in Derby as the first health and social care workers come for their Covid booster jabs
Some amazing stories from those receiving their jabs, talking about why they are getting theirs and why others should do the same

I'm at County Hall in Matlock for an "extraordinary"
@Derbyshirecc
meeting to dicuss its ongoing financial crisis
It revealed in Sep that it had a forecast overspend of £46M due by March 2024. This has now been cut to £33M by stopping non-essential spending and a hiring freeze
At a previous meeting I had a separate press seat reserved, but no so this time
The meeting isn't being streamed online so there'll be no transparency and scrutiny of the debate
This is not local democracy.
Nursing Notes confirms at least 100 UK healthcare workers have died.
Guardian says it has written 81 tributes for healthcare workers that have died.
Government has confirmed 27 have died so far.
Serious questions need to be asked about why official data is so far behind.
The owners of Haytop Country Park in Whatstandwell illegally felled more than 120 trees in 2017 to make way for an unlawful holiday lodge development
They now have 12 months to rip up all of what they built and replant 100 trees
Exclusive: Leaked report reveals that 200 staff will be cut from Derbyshire County Council’s early help service. A large part of what the service aims to do is prevent less-serious child abuse cases from escalating.
I'm off for the next week to spend some quality time with my wife and daughter - if the world could stop going quite so pear-shaped by the time I'm back, that'd be great.
Keep track of your local news organisations while I'm off!
So you all on the other side! 📰🗒✍
