Some day when Iโm not employed by a school and can speak freely, Iโll tell yโall whatโs really going on in these buildings. If you think my tweets are controversial nowโฆ just wait.
Things in education that should be illegalโฆ
โข windowless classrooms
โข salaries less than 50k
โข white-washed curriculum
โข disciplinary action for mental health days
โข class sizes above 25
โข not being given access to necessary materials required to do the job
Donโt ๐๐ผ talk ๐๐ผ negatively ๐๐ผ about ๐๐ผ students ๐๐ผ in ๐๐ผ front ๐๐ผ of ๐๐ผ other ๐๐ผ students ๐๐ผ
I understand there is a sub shortage, but teachers should NOT be responsible for covering the classes of teachers who are out for any reason. And if a teacher CHOOSES to do that, then compensation should be available. I said what I said. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
I donโt know who needs to hear this, but โspecialistsโ, such as Music, Art, & Language teachers, are not just โprepโ teachers. They are teaching some of the most important skills & get to expose students to potential passions and talents.
I canโt believe I even have to say thisโฆ
A TEACHER CAN TAKE THEIR PERSONAL DAYS WHENEVER THEY WANT AND THEY DONโT HAVE TO TELL YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WHY THEY ARE TAKING THEM.
Iโve seen a lot of people saying if you donโt want to be a teacher anymore you should go find another job. Well, let me tell youโฆ
itโs not that simple.
I just donโt have the patience to argue with non-educators over what is *actually* going on in schools. If youโre not living it, I really donโt care what you *think* is happening.
Just so we are clearโฆ
School is not the same thing as daycare.
Teaching is not the same thing as babysitting.
Education is not the same thing as childcare.
If Iโm teaching a class, I donโt need 3 people to come in and start yelling at the kids from every direction and walking around the room to see what theyโre doing. If thatโs what โsupportโ looks like, I donโt want it.
I understand that most things are done digitally these days, but Iโm actually getting concerned that the 4th graders I see are not yet writing a coherent sentence on a piece of paper.
Teachers need better strategies for decompressing after work. We canโt simply just get in our car and return to our normal life after a full day of chaos.
More people need to question the system that decided that a student teacher needs to pay full college tuition without getting pay for the full-time work that theyโre putting in at a school for multiple months
A superintendent walks into the schoolโs library and asks the librarian, โwhat do you do here?โ
Thatโs it. Thereโs no punchline.
Because this is not a joke.
This is what really happened to me todayโฆ
The superintendent is coming for a walkthrough today and many teachers are feeling anxious.
It really just shouldnโt be this way. You should never have to feel like throwing up, having a panic attack, etc., etc. at your job.
Climate & culture is important.
I wish someone would pay me to study the impact of teacher mental health on student performance so we can talk about the real problem in public education instead of test scores.
How many times in your career have you googled โthings I can do with an education degree besides teachingโ?
How many of those times were in the last 2 years? lol
While a kid was throwing up and I was frantically running around trying to find the maintenance guy and a trash can, my admin had the audacity to come and ask my students questions about their learning and take notes on their responses.
I wish I was joking.

I was that student โ usually knew the answer or was at least trying to figure it out, but never raised my hand. I also hated being cold called. I think I was sometimes nervous of being wrong and other times I just didnโt feel like it.
If someone in a relationship said they felt unsafe, belittled, financially-abused, or emotionally traumatized you would tell them to leave immediately.
But when itโs a teacher talking about their job, you question their character and beg them to stay.
Thereโs admin out here complaining about how many staff absences there are, but not doing anything to promote a positive, safe, healthy environment and school culture.
Picture this:
Itโs the 1st day back after break. Kids are going wild. People are being sent home with covid. The ceilings are literally caving in from water damage.
You get an email at 8 am from admin: โCreate a slide deck w/ a theme & pics for your word of the year by Fridayโ
A student threw up on the table in the library and then laid her head it in and refused to get up because she was too tired.
WHAT?!
Stop sending your kids to school like this.
Non-teachers in my DMs are worried that I share too much about the realities of my day, but if youโre so concerned then maybe you should support teachers so these horrors are not realities??? Just a thought.
I put 18 new crayons in each tableโs bin today. After 7 classes, the results are in:
Table 1: no crayons remain
Table 2: 9 full crayons and 2 broken ones remain
Table 3: 7 crayons remain
Table 4: no crayons remain
Table 5: 14 mostly broken crayons remain
We finally got one sub that said she was willing to come in for at least half of the week. This is a retired veteran teacher we are talking about.
She quit today because the kids were too disrespectful.
If youโre in my DMs saying I should only be tweeting about the positive aspects of teaching/education in order to increase teacher interest and retention, then youโre part of the problem ๐๐๐ป
Instead of the principal standing and staring at you, clipboard in handโฆ I think they should observe by joining in on the class.
Sit with the kids or coteach a lesson. Do the activity or help plan an activity. Then they can see your whole process. That feels more authentic.
โTeaching the kids to be gay? Thatโs crazy. I taught for 10 years. I couldnโt even teach them to write their name at the top of their paper.โ

If you are not an educator or a parental figure of a current student with their best interest in mind, I really donโt want to hear you talk about education or the teaching profession at all to be quite honest.
The idea of subbing sounds terrifying to me. Walking into a room of kids you donโt know with plans that may or may not have been left for you. It just sounds chaotic. Bless our subs.
When weโre not prepping for next school year, weโre attending all of our appointments that we couldnโt take off of work for beforeโฆ
#teachersummer
I donโt understand why anyone would want to be rude and disrespectful to the people who are literally taking care of their child for 8 hours each dayโฆ ๐คฏ
At first I was like: I did absolutely nothing to prepare for next school year over the summer.
Then I was like: But I worked on my mental health and fitness, which can help me be a better educator next school year.๐
Just the thought of people who havenโt stepped foot in a school during the school day since theyโve been in school having an opinion on teachers or teacher salaries makes my blood boil.
Every day. Every class. All day long.
Me: โSo today weโre going to _____.โ
Student: โOH MY GOD BROโฆ you do too much. These teachers always be trying to start with us!โ

@mbcourtneyedd
The people up top (admin, super, etc) should be able to explain the research behind the strategies they are asking teachers to implement in the classroom.
My students are doing digital book reports this quarter and are absolutely SHOCKED that they have to read the entire book they chose in order to complete the assignment.
The student who threatened me got a 2 day suspension and will be reinstated on Tuesday since we have a long weekend. You best believe Iโll be in that reinstatement meeting.
My admin asked teachers what she/the leadership team can take off of their plate this year. The teachers sat in silence. Iโm wondering if theyโre too nervous to ask or if they just donโt know where to beginโฆ
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I donโt care if you have permission or not, you shouldnโt post your studentโs face (or any random childโs face) on social media.
The disgusting way grown adult people talk about educators is exactly why there is so much disrespect in schools.
โTeachers failed youโ
โTeachers donโt know what theyโre doingโ
โTeachers are the problemโ
โฆ then you wonder why your kid canโt read. Maybe itโs your attitude.
I took a school computer away from a student who was using it to search inappropriate things. The school gave it back to the student. The next day they ask the student for the computer for evidence of the searches and are SHOCKED that the history is erased from the last 2 weeks.
1 out of 4 of my 6th grade classes has a 56% class average for this quarterโฆ mostly because the majority of students just donโt turn anything in. I put a place holder of a 0 until itโs turned in. The quarter ends next week.
Resorting to having your students work independently on their computers so that you can get a moment of peace & get yourself together doesnโt make you a bad teacher.
Just got the email that students will be virtual from Jan 3-Jan 7. We are on winter break and itโs the weekend, so I hope no one is expecting anything to be posted on Google classroom for Mondayโฆ
I was hired as a full time librarian for 1 school. These are the things I was told about AFTER signing my contract:
โข Teaching a 30 min Pre-k class
โข Teaching 5 classes at another school once a week
โข Teaching 4 grades through virtual learning
โข 1 hr+ of lunch duty every day
My lunch duty isnโt sitting and eating lunch with studentsโฆ No, no, no. Itโs opening milk cartons, collecting trash, monitoring the behavior of hundreds of kids, handing out sporksโฆ etc etc
Why doesnโt the country just have one set public school schedule? Teachers start and end a specific day. Students start and end a specific day. Holidays where schools are closed are established for all. Am I missing something? Why wouldnโt this work?
Stop letting students get away with racist or homophobic behavior.
Even when โitโs just a jokeโ.
If theyโre old enough for it to come out of their mouth, their old enough to have the conversation on why itโs disrespectful and inappropriate.
