We’ve found the Book of Hours captured by Holbein in his famous portrait of
#ThomasCromwell
! Cromwell’s book is one of the few objects depicted in a Tudor portrait to survive.
@TracyBorman
has dubbed it “the most exciting Cromwell discovery in a generation - if not more.”
The newly-released pictures for

The Mirror and the Light are superb. I am so proud to have completed some consultancy work on the props and documents for this truly stunning production. The attention to detail is outstanding. They have done Hilary proud 👑💜
To everyone freaking out about the prospect of a black actor playing Anne Boleyn, just a gentle reminder that first BAME woman to play Anne was back in 1933 - by Merle Oberon who was of Indian/ Polynesian descent - and like Jodie Turner-Smith undoubtedly will, she totally rocked.
Geeking out over the best 1540s French Hood I’ve ever seen on screen. Finally, we get to see a layered garment, laying flat on the head, with a chin strap. Stop it! ‘Firebrand’, from
@LizFremantle
’s extraordinary novel ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, is going to be a knockout.
Sadly had to say goodbye to this gorgeous little soul today. Quentin was a rather magnificent and much-loved part of my life and will be sorely missed. Much love, buddy ❤️
I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to see a painting before. The detail revealed from cleaning this Holbein masterpiece is just out of this world. We can even see Anne’s beauty spot!

After six unforgettable years at Hever, I'm off on exciting new adventures. I do hope you’ll join me for the ride! It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work at this magical, moated manor. It’s always hard to leave a place you love, but places you love never truly leave you ❤️

in 1540, Anne of Cleves’ marriage to Henry VIII was declared null & void. Amongst other properties, Anne was granted the right to lease Hever Castle from the crown. I recently acquired this panel of Anne, after Holbein’s portrait, & will be loaning it to Hever, her home.
Absolutely thrilled to receive this rather large panel portrait of Anne of Cleves today. Mislabelled as Jane Seymour, she is in need of a damn good clean and some restoration. Cannot wait to see her shine.
Being part of this discovery has been a career highlight. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has me! Cromwell’s Book of Hours will be exhibited at
@HeverCastle
, alongside the twin-like copy owned by Anne Boleyn, until 10th November.
“I have written books and I cannot unwrite them. I cannot unbelieve what I believe. I cannot unlive my life” - Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall. So very sad to hear of the death of the magnificent Dame Hilary Mantel. What a loss and what a legacy she leaves us with.
If you’d asked 4-year-old me how I would like to spend my 40th birthday, I would have told you I’d want to celebrate it at
@hevercastle
with an

cake. Thank you to my dear friend,
@NicolaTallis
, for making the past and present me moost happi👑💜🎂
The rarity & importance of this little gem at
@HeverCastle
is staggering. Arthur, Prince of Wales, c.1500, most likely painted for Catherine of Aragon. It’s older than any panel portrait in the
@NPGLondon
& is one of the earliest surviving easel portraits in British art.
Over the past year, I have worked with
@kateemccaffrey
and
@Alipalmer1979
to uncover a provenance trail for the book directly back to Thomas Cromwell. Housed in The Wren Library at Cambridge since 1660, it was printed in Paris in c.1527 by Germain Hardouyn.
It’s not every day that you get to hold the only surviving portrait of Arthur Prince of Wales painted within his lifetime. Chills! This absolute treasure of
#HeverCastle
was most likely in the possession of
#CatherineofAragon
& was then inherited by
#HenryVIII
.
Previously,
@kateemccaffrey
’s groundbreaking research revealed that Catherine of Aragon & Anne Boleyn both owned Books of Hours, printed in the same batch by Hardouyn in 1527. We can now confirm that Thomas Cromwell also received a copy from this same printing.
So sad to learn of the death of the brilliant C. J. Sansom. It doesn’t seem possible that it was twenty-one years ago that his brilliant lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake swept into my life. I’ve spent immeasurable blissful hours lost in his works. Rest in power, Chris.
Unlike Catherine and Anne’s rebound books, Cromwell’s retains its original silver-gilt binding, bejewelled with garnets. We have identified makers and hallmarks which prove that the binding was created between Dec 1529 & Dec 1530 by the goldsmith to King Francis I, Pierre Mangot.
Not every day that you get to hold the only surviving portrait of Arthur, Prince of Wales painted during his lifetime. This treasure of

You can find out more about our journey of discovery in the brand new book I have authored with

Astonishing that this portrait of Princess Elizabeth can be traced in an inventory of Edward VI’s paintings in 1547: ‘A table with the picture of the ladye Elizabeth her grace with a booke in her hande her gowne like crymsen clothe of golde withe workes’ [RCIN 404444]

I just had the privilege of previewing one of the smartest papers on
#AnneBoleyn
that I’ve ever read. With thrilling pieces of new evidence and packed full of truly brilliant analysis, I’m left with tingles. So many exciting new discoveries at present. Just love to see it 🙌
This later binding of
#AnneBoleyn
’s manuscript Book of Hours is so impressive, yet we know very little about its creation. The manuscript itself was created in Bruges c.1410-50, & is inscribed & signed by Anne. I always get chills holding it. Do come and see it at

The most breathtaking ‘Sea of Steps’ at Wells Cathedral. Completed in 1306, these beautiful, worn steps lead from the north transept of the cathedral to the Chapter House. Indeed, you may well have seen them in BBC’s ‘Wolf Hall’ & Lionsgate’s ‘Becoming Elizabeth’.

Thrilled that
@hevercastle
has the honour of exhibiting this panel portrait of Queen Catherine of Aragon. It has never been publicly exhibited before, so do make sure you come & see it at the ‘Catherine & Anne: Queens, Rivals, Mothers’ exhibition which runs from 8th Feb-10th Nov
It was tough to say farewell to this gorgeous panel portrait. Before it came on loan, it had lived without a name in a private collection for many generations. She returned home with the proud label of Queen Catherine of Aragon 👑
So proud to launch our brand new exhibition on 8th February at
@HeverCastle
, which is entitled “Catherine & Anne: Queens, Rivals, Mothers”. It explores the complex relationship between Queen Catherine of Aragon & Queen Anne Boleyn, with some exciting, rarely-seen loans…

Time for my annual search for this C16th miniature portrait of

in 1501 Prince Arthur married Catherine of Aragon. This extraordinarily rare portrait is believed to be the only extant portrait of Arthur painted in his lifetime and is likely the engagement portrait created for Catherine. It can be seen today at

Queen Anne Boleyn’s copy of William Tyndale's New Testament. Anne’s coat of arms are emblazoned on the second title page, and the words “Anna Regina Angliæ” are painted on the gilt edges of the leaves. A sneak peek at my work in progress. [British Library, C.23.a.5.]

Yesterday, I had the immense privilege of seeing this glorious version of the NPG portrait of Katherine Parr, attributed to Master John. It was painted by artist Ulyana Gumeniuk. I think it’s really rather brilliant.
#KatherineParr
Of all the many people I’ve been writing about for my next book,
#AnneofCleves
has been by far the most enjoyable to explore. I was recently lucky to acquire this lovely copy of Holbein’s portrait of Anne. She’s scrubbed up rather well thanks to conservation by Francis Downing.
One of the things I most love about
#AnneBoleyn
’s Books of Hours is their smell. Their bibliosmia is a blend of cocoa, vanilla, & spent fires which have seeped into the vellum. Our curator, Alison, always says “they smell like Hever.” They really do: they are its very essence.
Humbling & horrifying to handle an object made for taking a life. This late C16th beheading sword, held at
#HeverCastle
, is likely similar to that which killed
#AnneBoleyn
#OTD
in 1536. Designed for two-handed use, its end was blunted, marking it as distinct from a blade of war.

History at my fingertips. This tiny Hibernian harp groat dates to 1534-1535. It bears the crowned initials of King ‘H’enry VIII and Queen ‘A’nne Boleyn. A treasure of mine from Anne’s ‘thousand’ days as queen.

Blows my mind to read “your abode at Hever” written in King Henry VIII’s own hand and to think that Anne Boleyn actually held/ read this letter here at
@HeverCastle
. Chills!

in 1536, Queen
#AnneBoleyn
was executed by sword at the Tower of London. Anne bravely met her end in the shadow of the north side of the White Tower, the turrets of which were adorned with the onion-shaped cupolas installed for her coronation just three years earlier.
So sad to hear of the death of the incomparable
#GlendaJackson
. Her definitive performance of Elizabeth I was full of heart and stomach, as was her political career. A great loss. 👑
There is something very special about closing Hever Castle’s 640-year-old wooden gates for the night, stepping back and soaking up the atmosphere for a few minutes. Magical place ❤️
It’s that time of year again at
#HeverCastle
when
#HenryVIII
gets ceremoniously banished behind a massive Christmas tree and Queen
#AnneBoleyn
gets to rule her castle alone🎄👑
A glorious remnant of a brief marriage. This exquisite, rarely-seen ceiling in the chapel of St James’s Palace was created in 1540 to celebrate the marriage of
#HenryVIII
to
#AnneofCleves
. It is plastered with the couple’s ‘HA’ monogram, emblems, & the names Cleves territories.
Beyond thrilled with the exquisite conservation and restoration work by Francis Downing of my portrait of
#AnneofCleves
, after the famous Holbein. Just magical to be able to see her transformation at the beautiful

: a place she called ‘home’ for seventeen years.

Today is the 80th birthday of the magnificent Geneviève Bujold, pictured here at
@HeverCastle
between takes in a scene for the Oscar-winning 1969 film ‘Anne of the Thousand Days’. I’m one of many people who owe my love of

to Bujold’s steely, messy depiction of Anne ❤️
This gorgeous castle in Kent was once home to an ambitious family who regularly entertained King Henry VIII. One of its famous occupants attempted to set the country in a roar but lost their head instead. The crown would then seize this beautiful castle. Where am I? 🤔
You can see this imposing, previously unexhibited panel portrait of Queen Catherine of Aragon at

as part of the

exhibition. Included in a castle ticket price, the exhibition runs until 10th November 💜
This morning, I had the massive privilege of opening these exquisite books of hours with

both inscribed and signed. Visitors to

can view these rarely opened pages today, 19th May: the anniversary of Anne’s execution.

Detail of one of the carved quatrefoils from the painted fireplace in the Tapestry Room at St James’s Palace. It shows then initials of

joined between a true lover’s knot (c.1532-36).

’s white falcon returns to Hampton Court. Carved in oak, the falcon was adapted from Anne’s Irish Butler family ancestry. A beautiful example of Anne’s memory being cherished after
#HenryVIII
attempted to obliterate all trace of her.
My goodness, the

trailer is sizzling 🥵
#JudeLaw
looks unrecognisable as
#HenryVIII
& genuinely terrifying.
#AliciaVikander
looks simply brilliant as

too. Kudos to those responsible for the costume & set design: flawless. I cannot wait to see it 🙌
