"(Re-)Claiming Freinet Pedagogy as a Tool for inclusive education. " Hope you will enjoy the read, and let me know your thoughts!
@JarvisGoogoo
As a German citizen, I have always trouble with people comparing things to the holocaust as of not to diminish the horror of it, but I have to say the stories that the RS survivors are telling give me the same nausea as when I was visiting the sites of former concentration camps.
This is why I am proud of my university
@MSVU_Halifax
, offering free day camps for those affected by the wildfires. I am told that general registration will open tomorrow.🙌🙌🙌🙌
@JarvisGoogoo
I read that story years ago, and still, every time I come across it, it makes me want to throw up... the inhumanity in all of this is nauseating
Listened to radio news in this order
1. NS has a 2 billion $$ surplus
2. Suicide rate has never been higher in NS
3. New tent sites for homeless in Halifax
If we're doing that well on tax income for the province time to spend it where sorely needed, that's why I am paying taxes
So happy to find out that
@MSVU_Halifax
will require full vaccination for staff and students in the fall! This will make our jobs a lot easier and safer!
Well, here she is! First ride around the neighborhood done, it didn't disappoint! Now everyone needs to tell drivers in Nova Scotia that beeping at a cyclist when passing is not helpful at all. Summer will be fun!
🎉 MSVUFA members ratified our agreement (93%)! Strike ends with an agreement with the BoG, moving towards equity & fairness. Thanks for the support from students, community, and fellow unions. There will be more news to follow in the comming days. But for today, Thank You.
Not only are we losing our family doctor end of May but our medical records will be hold hostage by a company that will release them if we pay about $350 for the entire family... Is this even legal? These are MY records, no company should hold them hostage...
We really don't want to go on strike at
@MSVU_Halifax
, but sadly, it looks more and more like we will have to, as we as faculty have been disrespected by our employer throughout these negotiations.
Day 3:
@MSVUFA
update: our team sent in our counter offers yesterday. Our proposals are reasonable and should end this strike. We are composing back-to-work protocols right now.
@msvu_halifax
BoG team are you ready to end this today?
These are cool pictures. Not a lot of historic love in that room in any direction but yet they appear together and are civil, they might even be enjoying themselves. Oh to be a fly on the wall as this bunch flew across the pond together. Now there is a play.
@NightShiftMD
My partner was allowed to have Paxlovid and it took less than 24 hrs to have no more symptoms. Quite impressive! Me, on the other hand, who was not entitled to having any, dragged myself for over a week... more folks should be allowed to have it
Today, my son’s preprimary online class has a show and tell with vegetables. One girl, instead of showing her cucumber and talking about it, started eating the entire thing on camera 😂😂 and now, all the kids are eating their veggies on screen 😂😂 I guess it was an eat and tell
More disappointment with our employer... In case there is a strike on Monday, MSVU BoG will cancel sick benefits for those on sick leave. Truly despicable and ableist... Unfathomable from a place that has EDIA on their flags...
Important interview. The current situation sees a return toward more segregation for kids with disabilities, as pushing families toward “homeschooling” is a form a excluding them from public education. Thanks
@melizwalls
for sharing your experience
And we are off! These are our incoming elementary B.Ed. students this year
@MSVU_Halifax
. So much potential and new energy for the teaching profession!

Just found out that Austria has "gas-free days" every Friday, which means that riding any public transport is free for everyone. Wouldn't that be a great thing to do in Halifax? Or for that matter, anywhere in Canada?

I wrote this last fall when the AVRCE student support workers were on strike, and yet, here we are again.
@HRCE_NS
time to find better truly inclusive solutions for these situations, requiring kids with disabilities again to stay home is discriminatory
@DFisman
@WilsonKM2
It pays to listen to women especially when they are at the helm of the provincial testing strategy. Luckily, NS has been that smart.
We dropped off 20 masks from our n95 supply at our girl's daycare, and the staff was over the moon! If you have any, consider giving them to your ECEs or your teachers (another 12 will go to our son's teachers), most of them don't have any, and many would really love to have some
Took my e-cargo bike to the store for groceries, and had a crowd around it when I came back out :) lots of great conversations, several people are realizing that this could be the alternative to their car they have not been aware of.

Three down with COVID in our house... Quite a travel souvenir from our trip! COVID is definitely not over ... And I had managed to evade it for 3 1/2 years...
Day 14: the
@MSVUFA
strike is going into Week 3... At least
@MSVU_Halifax
is returning to the bargaining table tomorrow finally. We will be waiting on the picket line for meaningful negotiations and hopefully good news soon !
#supportMSVUFA
Well shit… my 3 year old has tested positive… she has a runny nose, but all her energy so far, so fingers crossed. Not sure how to self-isolate her from the rest of us, it will be nearly impossible…
Well, gas prices are up, pick up truck drivers are yelling about the carbon tax and I am just minding my own business using my cargo bike to get the kids from school 🎒😁☺️ getting even more out of the carbon rebate...
Spirits are high on the picket line 🚩 as our bargaining team returns to the table, bolstered by strong community support 👥 and the power of our collective voice 🗣️. Together, we’re making a difference! 💪

Oh, today I realized it has been 15 years since I moved to Halifax and started working
@MSVU_Halifax
… never expected to reach that milestone, and so quickly, so here’s to Halifax and Nova Scotia and its people that made me stick around :)
Congratulations to the class of 2023! Not only did they receive their Bachelor of Education yesterday, but they also picked up their NS Teacher's license from the Office of Teacher Certification after the ceremony.
Hey all, we need your help locating the MSVU President to help bring an end to the strike! 📢🎓 Your support is crucial in these times. Let’s work together for a resolution.

@RicharLisa
I agree, and the same applies to using oral history with disabled people… listening to their experiences in institutions is important, and excluding their voices is devaluing their knowledge on the basis of disability
After what feels like a million rapid tests, I am happy to report that we are finishing up COVID bootcamp tomorrow (our son's the last one to exit).
Us adults didn't get sick. 3x Moderna + 3x Pfizer: 1; COVID: 0
And thankfully, the kids sailed through with mild symptoms only
Seriously, I am starting a collection of pics of German playgrounds as an inspiration for a playground in Halifax. All about challenges and risky play. I love it!
We said goodbye today (again) to
@RamonaLumpkin
as Interim President
@MSVU_Halifax
Grateful that she came back at a difficult time to help us out. Happy travels and happy (second) retirement!
We are
@MSVUFA
! We are hailing from all across this world, from Mi’maki, Turtle Island, Guyana, Belarus, South Africa, Austria, Canada, Taiwan, Russia, The Philippines, India, USA, Germany, Jamaica, Iran, UK, China, Pakistan, Argentina … /1
It took me only 15 years in Nova Scotia and the third of Advent to have an Advent wreath similar to the one we would have back in Germany... Still perfectible but meanwhile, Happy 3rd Advent to all!
Last class of Inclusive Practices today! Students surprised me with a gigantic potluck, we celebrated the end of the term and talked about transitions, rituals and rites of passage and why it matters in schools and to students. A great term is coming to an end!
@MSVU_Halifax
So this happened tonight: I was handed the keys of the German Heritage Language School, as I will be their new principal starting next week :) new year, new challenge ...
Just found out that one of my colleagues
@MSVU_Halifax
lost their home in the fire. They did not even have five minutes to get out and left with nothing but their clothes on. We are collecting money if you would like to help to bridge the first time l, DM me.
Relieved to see that there has been a change of heart. We all hear those stories and it seems that many care except those in government who have the responsibility to go back to the bargaining table.
Please read this statement in response to the email Autism Nova Scotia sent earlier this week. We sincerely apologize to the EPAs and our community for the hurt this caused and we are committed to doing better.
Just found out that my kids' school will be part of the first phase of the implementation of the school lunch program starting this fall ❤️ no more lunch box packing (which has turned a bit into the Bain of my existence lol).
The energy at the
@MSVUFA
rally was electric! We are happy to show our support & stand in solidarity with striking faculty - the workers united will never be defeated!

Devastating news for the disability community in Nova Scotia. He was such an important advocate in this province. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
Inclusion Canada is saddened to learn of Steven Estey's passing. Steve was a fierce advocate for disability rights. His passion for the
#CRPD
was unparalleled, and his presence in the disability movement energized thousands. 1/2
We are looking for a new colleague in the Faculty of Education
@MSVU_Halifax
in the field of Literacy, Reading and writing instruction. Please spread the word to those that might be interested!
We need to put disabled kids, any vulnerable kids at the centre of our education system and rebuild it around them. If not, we will continue treating them as add ons that we might support depending on the school, the government or the mood of the day. Going to school is a right.
Inclusive education can't happen by the lottery of attending a dynamic & supportive school in any given year - it needs to be system wide & ideologically rooted. Paying support staff below the poverty line screams the absence of an ideology of inclusiveness.
