I spent 1.5 years of my life Anim Directing on WDL. Proud to say I got to help figure out the "play as anyone" feature & get ol' granny in there with my time on it. THE most challenging anim problem of my career. The team has done amazing work bringing this crazy thing together!

I got tired of animating in ugly Maya viewports so I made this lil tool with Boon Cotter & Ruben Moragon.

I hope this E3 is another reminder to all studios how much buzz can be generated from having great animation/ anim tech in your game. Still a lot of studios that don't embrace it as a strength & a priority as much as they should
Gameplay Animators are perfect candidates for Creative Director roles. We're technical, design orientated thinkers & well trained in storytelling. Far too few of us making it through the AAA gauntlet into those positions IMO.

Old thread but a good reminder of how much crafting strong poses impacts game feel directly. Weak poses = weaker game feel. It isn't "polish" or vanity work as some would have you think. It is literally at the core of the gameplay if you're in the business of combat especially.
I was asked (very nicely!) to explain why SF4 Sakura has better anim/key poses than SF5 Sakura. Here's a quick infographic. Basically the SF4 one looks stronger cos she's really turning into that punch. She's throwing from the hips. SFV is like the fist is pulling her forward!

Hi, I was the lead animator on QB. The animation team on that project was one of the smallest Iโve seen in AAA, yet we hit quality of teams triple the size. We busted our asses. No, we didnโt have animatable weapons. Bandwidth spent elsewhere, not โcouldnโt be botheredโ.
Maybe you know it or maybe you don't, but not many studios will credit you accordingly if you leave a project before shipping. Often you'll end up in an additional thanks section or not at all. Thanks to the

Without googling, guess how this practical in camera vfx shot was done in Sh! The Octopus (1937). The same technique was also used for the Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde' transformation (1932)

When leaving Ubi a few ppl chatted to me about their awe of Weta & curiosity about their processes. When shooting at Weta Digi the other day, team members expressed the same awe & curiosity of Ubi. People, the grass is never greener, it's basically the same everywhere :)
Animating body mechanics isn't easy! Always, ALWAYS start with reference video of Danny Devito eating a hotdog. When blocking, don't forget to stare deep into the void of your own meaningless existence as you make your dancing baby animation!

A few updates to my lil Unreal tests. Got in ball pickup/ shooting, health system on goals, aim matrix, jump pads & a nasty character swap. Somehow during putting some of this stuff in I broke the grapple though. *Grumbles*

) for working with anim sets & override layers. Nothing fancy but something I use regularly that may help you, especially with locomotion work. Might make a video demo for it if I find time but no promises
Born from the frustration of having to use Unity at work, I started playing with this little dude in Unreal at home. Early days with no real ambition for it. So far I have a few debug tools running, some basic locomotion, a little combo and some layered blends ๐ ๐ซ

When u makin poses in the menu, try flim flamin the curve sheet with a tcb euler chain magnet 4 free arc booty in half the time.Then, paste ur cat pictures into the script editor & blamo! U a pro.

Yay! The Dark Horse Aloy statuette arrived! Took a year but worth the wait. You can grow very attached to the characters you spend years animating so it's a great bookend to collect something like this as a memento โค
