Apropos of NOTHING AT ALL, NOTHING IS WRONG, TWIXTER IS AN EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL SITE, I've updated my personal splash page with all my contact and where-to-find details! Y'know, just in case.
This is cool because it implies that the devs discovered in testing that sequence breaking is possible, and instead of putting up invisible walls or killplanes, they just warn you.
The devs were 100% right and absolutely shouldn't be forced to apologize. It's their game, they're allowed to be passionate and a little bit cranky about weird nerds coming out of nowhere and telling them how to run it.
Let game devs be human.
With Elden Ring out, the 'Git Gud' crowd are back in force.
New players: Don't listen to them. Get cheap. Start out as the Vagabond and tank through most fights with a big shield and safe counters. Buy a bow and snipe stuff at range. Summon ghost wolves on anything menacing.
‘Final Space’ creator Olan Rogers confirms that the series is becoming a tax write-off for Warner Bros Discovery and will be gone forever from all official channels after Netflix takes the series down internationally.
All physical copies of the series have already stopped.
Life. Sentence. For. Mischief.
The state isn't trying to hide it anymore. The moment they have the chance to 'disappear' people entirely that they've considered to be dissidents, it'll happen.
It's hilarious that a lot of people missed Elden Ring's tutorial because they assumed the NPC saying 'go down here to learn things' was lying and it was a trap.
On one hand, good to be cautious, but perhaps not THAT cautious.
Hasbro announces 'We're going to be spending tons of money on games like BG3' just after firing almost everyone at WoTC involved in the project and burning that bridge so thoroughly that Larian came out saying 'We absolutely will not be doing any more D&D, bye'
🖕Corporations!🖕
Gamergaters: The Wokes are stealing all the Sexy from games!
Hades 2: Yes, our game is the most inclusive, progressive take on Greek myth ever written and also the maximum hornt you can possibly get while still somehow squeaking in with a T rating.
If making Hi-Fi Rush isn't enough to keep a studio alive, nothing is. Nobody is safe so long as they're owned by a mega-corp.
Which, hey... That's part of the game's core message too.
For some reason, the dumbest nerds on the internet are trying to convince me (someone who grew up through the 80s and 90s) that videogames are too sanitized and censored now and things were far edgier, gorier and sexier back in the Good Old Days.
I don't even know where to begin
Some games beat around the bush on LGBT issues, but Granblue Fantasy (and Versus) has Ladiva, a gigantic trans wrestler who chooses not to alchemically transition because she loves the body her parents gave her.
Everyone in the game - even villains - uses the right pronouns.
Get you a girl that can do both? Forget that.
*BE* A GIRL THAT CAN DO BOTH!
I’m honored to voice Ladiva in
#GranblueVersus
! Her heart is pure, her muscles are strong, her hair is amazing, and she’s living her best life. Those sound like pretty legit 2020 goals to me! 😍
Dwarf Fortress has made approximately FIVE MILLION DOLLARS within 24 hours of its Steam launch.
Obviously Steam and the publisher are taking a chunk of that, but I don't think Zach and Tarn Adams are going to be worrying about money for a while. Or ever again, if they keep it up
So, a little bird at Unity (not revealing my source for OBVIOUS reasons) suggests that if developers want to get the execs to pay more attention, it might be worth loudly boycotting or seeking refunds for the upcoming Unite conference scheduled for November.
Spread the word.
Helldivers 2 is no longer purchasable in 177 countries where PSN is not available (but some are still available like Baltics).
This game has now received 215,000 negative reviews.
A reminder that Elon Musk's direct orders are the reason why his last rocket exploded. He had them build a launchpad with none of the slopes or energy channels that one should have. The structure turned into crater on launch, sending concrete shrapnel for miles & into the rocket.
America has reached the point where 'You shouldn't complain about the concentration camps, because the hidden military torture camp I helped run was far worse' is a hot take someone can have.
Police nearly kill a harmless old man and casually march over his bleeding, unconscious body. Two cops get suspended, and the ENTIRE DIVISION quits in solidarity *with the attackers*.
Abolish the entire fucking force. They are a violent gang marching in practiced lockstep.

@BPDAlerts
Emergency Response Team has resigned from the team, a total of 57 officers, as a show of support for the officers who are suspended without pay after shoving Martin Gugino, 75. They are still employed, but no longer on ERT.

Apparently "Indie" can just broadly mean "Corporate-made, corporate-published megahit that looks kinda low-fi" now, according to the Dorito Pope.
As if the Game Awards weren't embarrassing enough.
Geoff Keighley has shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding Dave the Diver’s nomination for Best Indie Game at The Game Awards.
“Independent can mean different things to different people, and it’s sort of a broad term."
PSA: Wonder what Marathon is about now that Bungie are relaunching it?
Good news! Bungie made the original Marathon trilogy open-source under a super permissive licence! You can download a modern engine, all three games and multiple full fangames here!
At my keyboard, so I can do this justice now:
373 games (195 for Windows, plus tabletop stuff) for a minimum of $8, raising money for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.
It's running for just over a week. Spread the word. In this thread, I'll highlight some of the best games
I will eternally side-eye people who champion this one. The game the DEVELOPERS said was 'not GAY like those effeminate anime-men'. The one with the sniper rifle abortion. The one where Vergil is leader of Anonymous. The one with the constant rampant sexism. It's just... cringe.
'DmC: Devil May Cry' released on this day in 2013.
An attempt to reboot the 'Devil May Cry' franchise by way of studio Ninja Theory, who were ordered by Capcom to completely re-imagine protagonist Dante and the world around him. The end result did not go over particularly well.
It's MEGATHREAD time, celebrating Doom's 30th anniversary.
A timeless game, now more relevant than ever as it becomes an indie dev platform.
Here, we're going to list and share a few thoughts on every standalone game using the Doom engine. There's a lot. Many free. Buckle up.
Alex Jones is so desperate for views he's doing animal co-host gimmicks. Jacob Wohl is presenting instantly-debunked gonzo conspiracy theories out of a garage. Milo Yiannopoulos can't even get into a furry convention.
It's almost like deplatforming them EXTREMELY FUCKING WORKED.
Tip for Baldur's Gate 3 that some people seemingly missed;
It's okay to loot every item you come across. You can bulk-send stuff from your overstuffed inventory to your camp stash at any time by right-clicking on it and selecting 'send to camp'.
Multi-select with shift/control.
Where did this idea come from that cyberpunk, as a genre, is about feelgood rebellion and heroically overthrowing the powers that be? Almost all the major works in the genre end with either tragedy or the protagonists barely surviving and slinking off into the shadows.
Just so we're clear: The 90 minute video went up fine. No objections at first.
Then it was flagged Inappropriate
So he appealed
45 minutes later, YT reply that it was thoroughly reviewed and was definitely filthy.
Then apologized and un-flagged it.
Then RE-FLAGGED.
NOW THIS
I appealed the age-restriction just to see if it would work. Of course, the appeal was denied.
Now they're telling me it's violating their "sex and nudity policy".
It's a Mega Man 2 video.
Not naming names, but...
If you write for a MAJOR GAMES NEW SITE, please do not report AT ALL on TINY FANGAMES RELATED TO OVERLY LITIGOUS CORPORATIONS without the express permission of their creators, making them aware of the risks.
That's how you get fans threatened by lawyers
So, this is a big game by a veteran Japanese studio.
Zero user reviews so far on Steam, from any region. Not even a joke one for spam. They just didn't market it at all. Didn't tell anyone it was launching.
Level 5 are a baffling company.
Aaaaand Megaton Musashi: Wired is out on PC. Mech brawler RPG by Level 5, the Ni No Kuni/Professor Layton studio.
Previously Japanese-only! This is an expanded re-release, now with cross-platform co-op. And some guest mechs like Getter Robo & Mazinger Z.
As far as I'm concerned, ZA/UM isn't the studio that made Disco Elysium anymore. Without the director, the writer and the lead artist, that's most of its soul just... gone.
And to hear that they were all fired, and it was kept quiet for nearly a year is absolutely nightmarish.
It wasn't until the mid 90s that it was acceptable for characters to say 'Hell' or 'Damn' in games. Holy Water and Crosses were edited out of Castlevania because they were afraid of associating Christian iconography with vampires!
Welp, so much for that brief age of 'Valve are heroically standing up against AI while Epic are evil and embracing it'.
I've told y'all many times: Both companies are run by weird libertarian nerds insulated from interaction with normal people. Both suck about equally.
In Elden Ring it's okay to run away from big enemies and look for goblins to bully.
You don't need to memorize attack timings for parries. I'm over 20 hours in and have successfully parried *twice*.
Don't get greedy. Fast-travel to safety if you earned enough runes for a level.
Just saw a comment on my Not Tonight story saying that 'Papers, Please was a better game because it didn't ram its political agenda down your throat'.
What in the fucking fuck does fuck fuck fuck?
Back in the early 90s, saying 'Heck' was borderline.
In 2023, the most mainstream, widely praised turn-based D&D RPG had a vampire twink getting fucked by a grizzly bear *IN A PUBLIC PRESENTATION*.
ICYMI: Bandai-Namco released three experimental short 3D platformers *free* on Steam the other week
Nottolot - Hack robots and use their abilities to access new areas
Doronko Wanko - Be a messy dog and track mud all over the house
Boomeroad - Create & ride floating grind-rails
Yeah, this is going to be all over every games news site on Monday. Super-casual, low-info gamers weren't the kinds of people to play Disco Elysium. It sold based on word of mouth.
And the word on ANY future projects from the studio will be absolutely doom-laden now.
We're in an era of such hilariously terrible media literacy that Games Workshop had to make a public statement reminding people that the Imperium in WH40k are comically evil and not (as some would argue) good and cool role-models.
The more I read of complaints about Helldivers 2, the more I believe the devs need to be even ruder.
"Impossible difficulty is too hard!"
It's called fucking Impossible and there's NINE below it.
"They called us braindead!"
They said using one gun to solve the game is braindead
Jesus fucking christ, Twitter actually had Sonicfox delete his Mortal Kombat tweet because it contained the word 'Terf', and gave him a twelve-hour suspension.
Hot take of the day: Weird, deep secrets that only get discovered weeks, months or even years after a game launches are one of the coolest things about the medium.
People who demand that a game must reveal everything to them on demand are extremely boring.
Hide things. Be rad.
I've been hooting about the best of the best games, but honestly, some of the most fun I've had in years has been with games with seriously rough edges. So here's a tweet (twixt?)-thread about some stranger, more offbeat games you might dig in the sale.
Good god, Lethal Company is the third most-played game on Steam now. This weird, janky, EXTREMELY solo-dev game has become a viral megahit.
I hope the dev is going out and partying every night with his friends. He has won at life and can just do whatever he wants forever now.
A reminder that the creator of FNAF was caught actively donating the maximum legal amount to aggressively anti-LGBTQ+ politiicans.
When pressured, he responded with a quick 'I don't really hate you gays' statement before leaving the public sphere entirely with his money hoard.
There's a whole genre of Steam review that basically reads 'I enjoyed this $20 game for hundreds of hours, but I eventually got bored so I'm going to recommend you don't play it'.
I'm not saying such reviews are WRONG, but it's a fundamentally alien way of looking at enjoyment.
I see the 'Kojima just wants to make movies' memes are spinning up again.
Him and his team make the most videogame-ass videogames about. They are so packed with interactive systems that most players don't know half of them. Death Stranding made WALKING into a technical challenge
Excellent piece on why there's so much misunderstanding and misinformation (some intentional, some just confused) surrounding DD2.
It is a game with friction built into almost all of its mechanics when people assume games should be frictionless. The friction IS the fun though.
Taking time this evening to write about Dragon's Dogma 2. It's a miracle this game exists. An astounding work!
But I think 2024 is a ~terrible~ year for such a friction heavy game to reach a mass audience.
my rambles on cohost:
I've been playing Fromsoft's action-RPGs since the 90s and mostly suck at them. It was 17 hours into Elden Ring and nearly level 30 before I *approached* the castle in the north the game tells you to go to right at the start.
Just because it can be done doesn't mean you have to.
The horse is your friend. When riding, you can outrun 98% of trouble. The other 2% are bears the size of buses and I've still no safe plan to deal with that other than 'avoid the murderbear forest'.
You can also snipe enemies from horseback, or safely hit-and-run slower enemies.
Dragon's Dogma 2 and Elden Ring are both very similar east-meets-west open-world fantasy action RPGs.
They also couldn't be more different. It's like at every point of design, Elden Ring picked choice A and DD2 picked choice B.
I love em' both.
Sgt. Javier Esqueda, a 27-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department, faces 20 years in prison for *revealing* that his fellow officers “slapped Eric Lurry, restricted his airway and shoved a baton in his mouth hours before his death.”
So many rushed to defend ZA/UM's new owners firing all the core creatives behind Disco Elysium as getting rid of overly dramatic 'auteurs' and that the series would be just fine without them.
A few months later, the studio is down to a skeleton crew & another DE game is canceled
Just did some rough guesstimate math and... wow. Yeah, the solo dev behind Lethal Company probably never *has* to work a day again in his life. It has probably raked in around $6m in revenue. Minus Steam's cut and taxes, yeah, he can retire now.
At 21 years old, if he wants to.
A whole free STALKER fan-sequel dropped today!
True Stalker is, from the little I've played, a very polished standalone fangame set after the original trilogy. More story-based than other sandbox-focused fanworks, with a modernized UI.
It's VERY pretty.
Still in a state of disbelief that when asked for clarification by a journalist, Unity clarified that yes, EVERY time you install a game using the engine, they will charge the developer extra for it.
Even if you uninstall and reinstall on the same machine.
That is madness.
Let us never forget that Yahoo bought Tumblr for $1.1 BILLION at its peak.
And then they tried to purge it of smut and WHOOPSIE DAISY they sold it on for $3m.
That's a 99.7% drop.
If you dig immersive sims (Deus Ex, Dishonored, Prey, etc), you REALLY should own Ctrl Alt Ego. Undersold but incredibly smart.
You play as a space ghost possessing robot bodies and inheriting their abilities. Every problem has multiple solutions, you just gotta get creative.
"One of the all time greatest" - Sinno has spoken.
What's a shame is I'm mostly preaching to the converted here (and probably boring people, sorry about that), but I've no way to reach all the other players and even if I do occasionally they don't seem to want to believe it
Oh, this is wonderful. An actual tank commander tried to convince them to buff his favourite tank in War Thunder by posting classified specs to PROVE how much better it should be in-game.
It's becoming increasingly clear that all this paranoia about games being 'woke' and diversity consulting is right-wing gamers trying to find a reason that corporations would lay people off and shut down studios despite record profits.
*Anything* to avoid criticizing capitalism.
I just saw a guy arguing that Hi-Fi rush, (a game by a veteran AAA studio and subsidiary of mega-publisher Bethesda which is in turn now part of giga-corp Microsoft) is 'indie' because it fits the 'vibe'.
I want to bite something and thrash it around until it dies.
While it's technically possible to win every fight in Elden Ring with perfect precision and style, it's much more common to treat encounters like puzzles.
Pack of wolves in a field? Ride to a high ledge and snipe them one at a time with a bow. They're pack hunters. You're not.
This here is what it looks like when you Git Gud in Elden Ring. This is 100% possible, given enough time and practice.
But before you can even dream of that kind of nonsense, focus on getting Not Dead first. It won't look as cool, but it's fun. I swear.
Zelda: ToTK is causing gamers worldwide to reckon with some uncomfortable truths:
Zelda is a mega-budget immersive sim now.
Banjo Kazooie: N&B was ahead of its time.
The Switch is visibly creaking more than a bit.
Some of the new cast are going to cause many a furry awakening
Also, while the in-game tutorial messages are always your friend, everything else is to be treated with suspicion. The 'Guidance Of Grace' that NPCs say you should follow? It points towards the next big story boss, which is the opposite of safe.
Raise a middle finger to the gods
"I know how people feel about them, but you know, suddenly I realize I'm in the middle of making one and I just can't help myself. It just happens." - Hidetaka Miyazaki on making Poison Hellswamp Zones.
You literally can't parody it anymore.
This is exactly why Epic have to buy exclusives in order to make any headway starting a new store. Discord is on about fifty hojillion PCs, but its store tanked and the subscription service never got off the ground.
Breaking into the PC games market is clearly very, very tough.
So many people are responding to this with 'There was a tutorial!?'.
Yes, just after the obligatory 'Well done, you learned how to die' bit, there's a glowing ghost guy who'll point to a cave and say something like 'drop down to remember the art of war'.
There's the tutorial.
We've gone from cryptobros completely upending the market for computer hardware and semiconductors globally to AI bros brain-draining the history of the internet.
Gold-rush chasing clowns are a major threat now.
Sorry, but is down temporarily-- working to restore service.
(details: this is our second blast of abusive traffic from an AWS customer today apparently from an AI company harvesting Internet Archive texts at an extreme rate)
I've seen a bunch of indie devs mention that there's some absolutely bonkers black box stuff deciding what games are what genres and can be involved in events.
Hedon is absolutely 110% an FPS. But it's not allowed to be part of the FPS event.
Lots of people cheering and laughing over this, but Daedalic were a consistently good point-and-click adventure studio until they bit off more than they could chew with Gollum.
More jobs lost and damage done to a whole genre because of one game overreaching.
Daedalic Entertainment is shutting down internal game development and shifting to publishing. Development for its next Lord of the Rings game (in dev since mid-2022) is halted
In the space of just one year, the most tedious techbros on the planet have managed to make AI and robots so fundamentally uncool that IT KILLED DAFT PUNK.
We're in the worst timeline for sure now.
As
@JimSterling
points out, this is what actual game censorship looks like.
Plus, Rule Of Rose is pretty mild in what it actually depicts, but all it takes is one THINK OF THE CHILDREN moral panic to get political busybodies moving.
I'm a little weirded out by the sizable cohort of people I follow who seemingly bought Cyberpunk 2077 just to dunk on it.
It'd be far more productive to just talk about all the cool indie games you could be buying instead. TONS came out this year. In fact, I'll thread a few here
When Half-Life: Alyx arrives tomorrow, we know many of you will want to share your first playthough with friends, so we've published a guide to help tune the game's settings for spectating and streaming before you start.
Also one specific tip that the game brings up but a lot of people missed: Even when you don't have a map for an area, you can see a little standing stone marker on the map screen.
That's where you'll find the next map piece. It is always a good idea to ride out there an grab it.
Destiny 2 has now outright deleted:
The original main campaign/levelling.
Most of the original strikes & raids.
The first two smaller expansions.
The first major expansion.
That's about $140 in content that I've paid for that just doesn't exist anymore. Fans tell me this is good
i like bungie, lotta great people there, but this is so fucking bad. i gave you money for this and you're taking it away. i did not know you would be taking it away when i gave you money for it.
how is this not considered one of the all-time worst game things that's happened?
Just to be clear, this isn't leaks or anything sketchy. The dude just posted an abridged Let's Play, basically, and is now serving hard time.
That is incomprehensibly fucked up.
Kadokawa took a dude to court for posting condensed summary/spoiler edits of, among other things, a certain Steins;gate game, & he's been sentenced to 2 yrs prison (5-year suspended sentence) & a ¥1M fine🇯🇵 this is the first-ever conviction for sharing unauthorised game footage
See thread. Whenever a cop gets sick, or even sees something written on a cup that might be unflattering, they run to the media wailing about how terrible their lives are.
And almost without fail, they admit to lying a day or two later
Cops lie. A lot. About the most banal shit
To this day, I think the most bizarrely underground mod scene is for Tomb Raider 4.
TR4 had a level editor that let people output fully standalone fangames. There are THOUSANDS of them now. Some a single level, some a full game. Almost all hosted here:
LRT: Seriously, an Arenanet dev calls a Youtuber and asshat for presuming to tell her how to do her job, and she gets fired.
Hideki Kamiya calls you an fucking idiot and blocks you for looking at him funny, and he gets internet high-fives forever.
When the Disco Elysium news broke, I was absolutely, horribly sure that this was the discourse we were going to get out of it.
The idea that leaders, writers, directors, etc are interchangeable and that it's the nebulous concept of a 'team' that makes a game/film/show is... bad.
Literally the first NPC you can talk to. Giving no indication of hostility or malice. He's just sitting there, in a chair, glowing like a signpost.
No, you're not an enlightened person that has Figured Out The Code if your first response to that is to do the literal opposite.
Another good tip is that if you've got no Runes (the combined XP/Currency of Elden Ring), you've got nothing to lose. Pick a random direction and ride. Explore anything that looks interesting. Test new enemies to see how tough they are. Unlock every fast-travel point you spot.
@Awmuth
@manfightdragon
If it IS an elaborate mod, then that's equally cool because AFAIK there's no map-edit mods for the game! And that area looks VERY elaborate.
More people need to be playing this lovely, silly game. It's Half-Life but you're the Science Team, improvising goofy survival gadgets because Gordon Freeman never turned up to work today.
There's an open beta test running until the end of the year.
@kinetizen
What is it with Blue Ticks and wanting to be as wrong as humanly possible in public? Is it some kind of fetish? Do you get off on being shamed and humiliated by all and pushed to the top of Twitter responses?
I guess it's cheaper than hiring a dominatrix.
Ooh, Path Of The Abyss is out today. Very stylish Wizardry-like dungeon crawler I've had an eye on for a while.
Early access release is apparently the whole game, but they want to tune, tweak and add post-game stuff for a year longer.
A reminder that Twitch's 'just turn off game audio' advice isn't even enough. The sound of players speaking can still set off automated copyright claims.
Its very cool that I had a VOD get muted during Phasmophobia, no music or anything playing, but I guess us whispering at a ghost sounded a lot like some meditation spoken word album lmao. This rocks!
I love how gosspiy the Pawns in Dragon's Dogma 2 are. I had a guy join my party, and then almost immediately tell me that his master "has a great many people visit their private chambers, never the same twice".
And all the other pawns thought that was extremely newsworthy.
Every success of Musk's over the past twenty years can be attributed to someone else's hard work and thought, because everything the man himself touches turns to shit and ashes.
Just to put some things into perspective, Kitfox's sales estimate for the game was 160k copies over the first two months. They hit that in the first 24 hours.
Also Tarn & Zach have been making a decent living from player donations until now. This is just their big windfall.
A recent spike of interest in it thanks to some big YouTubers has got me obsessing over the Fear & Hunger games again. I'm hyped for the F&H2 updates (more characters/story, etc) and really hope a third game gets made to wrap up the series.
So, what makes them special? A thread:
Aaaaand Megaton Musashi: Wired is out on PC. Mech brawler RPG by Level 5, the Ni No Kuni/Professor Layton studio.
Previously Japanese-only! This is an expanded re-release, now with cross-platform co-op. And some guest mechs like Getter Robo & Mazinger Z.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood is continuing the previous game's trolling of the MAGA crowd.
Which goes some way to explaining the 'this is SJW propaganda' rants passing themselves off as Steam reviews.
Elden Ring, more than any other Souls-like game, rewards understanding the intuitive basics more than weird high-level theory.
I'm 20+ hours in and am still using the armor and weapons I started with. I added a shield, but that's about it.
Magic? Power stances? What're those?
Let's get hipster. Share a game that you like on Steam that has under 100 user reviews. Under 50, ideally.
Let's shine the spotlight on some REALLY undersold stuff there.
I'll open with Blast-Axis. A high-agility 6DoF shooter with an industrial vibe.
