SCOOP - US pressing Japanese PM Suga to make joint statement with Biden on Taiwan at the White House. Would be first leader level statement on Taiwan since 1969 when Nixon met Sato. Japanese officials debating whether to go that far.

Suga will arrive in Washington as China sends more and more fighter jets and bombers into Taiwan’s air identification zone (ADIZ). Biden has also just sent Richard Armitage and others to Taipei in another gesture of support for Taiwan.
China on Monday also warned the US to stop “playing with fire” & halt official contacts with Taiwan. But Biden team has been clear that there will be more - not less - of what they call unofficial contacts.

With Suga a member of Nippon Kaigi, as are many of his cabinet and Abe as advisor, we cannot expect much amelioration of tensions. US, whatever regime, favours a militaristic Japan.
BTW, Nippon Kaigi is militaristic anti-foreigner, particularly anti-Korean and anti-Chinese.
