@riseandgrindcor The speaking in tongues bit always sent me up a tree bcz, well... each and every one of them must, perforce, know *intimately* that they themselves are faking it ; and probably know full well everyone else is faking it too. But they're still doing it. And treat it seriously.

@DeuxKobal @riseandgrindcor There are fascinating studies on the phenomenon; it is theatrical but often it’s a form of genuine trance state, essentially the same type of practice as shamanic trance. Felicitas Goodman showed glossolalia is audibly consistent across cultures, not language and not fake.

@Tychaios0 @riseandgrindcor Felicitas Goodman ? C'mon. Now you're plainly inventing people. That's a poor DM's improvised NPC name.

@DeuxKobal @riseandgrindcor they all know its gibberish but its simply the verbal equivalent of spontaneously dancing, or moving one's body. Its supposed to be an act of spontaneous energy or inspiration. that doesn't mean its not ridiculous to observe

@HugeHatLogan @riseandgrindcor But I'm not sure it is ? Theologically speaking, I mean, it's supposed to be speaking either the language of angels or maybe the primordial, universal per-Babel tongue. But they *have* to know that's not what they're doing.

@DeuxKobal @riseandgrindcor You seem to be severely lacking a mystical experience in your life to be so wholeheartedly applying rationality to the irrational. Get out there and transcend yourself, even for just a little bit. Probably will feel nice

@WildWildCloudz @riseandgrindcor Honestly, I just wish people would more wholeheartedly apply rationality to the rational.

@DeuxKobal @riseandgrindcor Well speaking as an ex-Christian, while I never spoke in tongues(my church didn't do that)I did experience what I thought at the time was the feeling of God, which led me to cry or yell out, but was actually just collective effervescence. So they might not know theyre faking.

@Ukulele_girl97 @riseandgrindcor They should go to a Rammstein concert (although no, no, not any more, for Reasons. Damn you, Till...). Now *that's* effervescence. And spontaneous yelling out. But no mysticism required whatsoever. You don't even have to understand german, let alone Tongues.

@DeuxKobal @riseandgrindcor This isn't even how speaking in tounges worked. They spoke "each others foreign tounges", so each other's languages. It's not a made-up one. Tbh it's honestly probably like a lot of historical delusions caused by ergo fungus in bread. Massive LSD trip.m from moldy bread. Lol
