I give you... the Skulduggery Pleasant Grimoire!
Out on May 27, it’s a book-by-book guide to the series, but it’s ALSO got new content, new insights, new information, new artwork by some awesome artists - AND a brand new story that weaves through it all.
On a good day, I'll write about 2000 words. Today, I wrote close to 10,000.
I am so incredibly fried, but I've just sent Seasons of War to my editor and agent — and the book is FINISHED.
(Bar edits and whatnot. Shush.)
FINISHED!
The girl I based Valkyrie on for Phase 1 has just had a baby boy! He’s tiny! He’s cute! He’s wonderfully healthy!
And if you think this means Val is now getting a kid in Phase 2...
No.
Gentlepeople of the internet, I present to you the cover of Until The End, by the fantabulous
@TomPercivalsays
…! To be unleashed on our new, improved publication date of April 14th!
I've been told that, due to the awful algorithms now running social media, not everybody knows that there is a BRAND NEW SKULDUGGERY TRILOGY starting on March 28th!
It's PHASE THREE, people!
PHASE THREE!
Annnnnnnnd the NO ONE’S surprise, BOOK 14 will be out in April of 2021!! Yayyy!!!
Do I have a title for you? No! Do I have a cover? No! Do I have hint as to the plot? No! Am I still writing the damn thing? Yes!!
Praise Jebus! Praise ME!!
Skulduggery Pleasant Phase 1 was 9 books long.
Skulduggery Pleasant Phase 2 was 6 books long.
Skulduggery Pleasant Phase 3 will be 3 books long...
... and it's kicking off on March 28, 2024, with A Mind Full Of Murder.
Well, erm... I've just accidentally written the most brutal scene I've written in a long, long time. I didn't even plan to do it. My notes just said "The assassin attacks them".
I didn't know HOW he'd attack them, but... Jesus. I wasn't expecting THIS.
FINALLY!
Coming to you later this year is our very first Skulduggery Pleasant graphic novel — BAD MAGIC — a collaboration with
@Pauljholden
set after the events of Until The End.
Yep, that's a brand new, original story of murder, monsters, and magic.
The first draft of Skulduggery Pleasant: Dead Or Alive is DONE.
A full DAY ahead of schedule!!
Sure, not everything is finished, and there are 3 or 4 chapters I haven’t written yet, but that’s normal for me.
But it’s done. Another book, finished.
Today is a good day.
I read a LOT of Iron Man in the year leading up to this project being offered to me, and it struck me how nice Tony really was and how deep this friendship ran. I’d had enough of Steve-Tony conflict- I just wanted them to be pals again!
Just got this in the mail - my first copy, all set for release on
#WorldBookDay
! It takes place after Death Bringer (I think. I dunno. I forget.) and is out March 4!
I REALLLLY wanted Book 12 to come in at around 80,000 words, as most of my books soar beyond 100,000.
I've just passed 80,000, and I've still got at least 15 chapters to write, plus lots to fill in.
Damn it. Did it again.
So this surprise I mentioned... less of a “surprise”, really, more of a revelation, I suppose.
The title to Book 14.
Coming at you, this Friday at 11AM, Irish time.
Oh hells yeah.
I really feel like I have to apologise for what I'm putting Valkyrie through right now. I would apologise to her but she's, um, occupied right now... so I'll apologise to you, instead,
Sorry.
And now? Now we start the Skulduggery Pleasant choose-your-own-adventure story!
This will continue until April 2nd, and at the end of every segment, you'll get to vote as to how the story will progress.
Choose wisely!
#SkulduggeryBites
Dead or Alive is done.
I've been hovering over the finish line for last week, but I just sent it off 30 seconds ago. It needs two paragraphs added to the epilogue, and a description of a city in the middle, but that's it. The book is complete.
It’s a beautiful day in Ireland. We’re having a bit of a vote right now, deciding upon a woman’s right to choose.
In case anyone was in any doubt, I’m voting yes. I’m voting to trust women.
Get out there. Make your voice heard. This is important.
#RepealThe8th
After a few delays, we’re hoping to get the Skulduggery merchandise store up and running in September. Some of the items will be exactly what you’d expect. Some will most definitely NOT be.
Oh, the FUN…
Oh wow... I just found the document containing the first complete draft of Skulduggery, dated January 30, 2006, and coming in at 122,302 words — so a little longer than Death Bringer.
For everyone panicking about the characters I said I'm killing, please remember that innocent bystanders in my books are characters also. I could just as easily be talking about killing THEM.
You people, I swear. It's as if I've taught you that your favourites are never safe.
I was sent the Skulduggery publishing plan today.
We’ll be releasing each book of the new trilogy in March/April of the next 3 years, which’ll take us to April of 2026.
And in April of 2027 it will be the 20th ANNIVERSARY of the first book.
TWENTY YEARS!
Sometimes, when you write, you find yourself going down a rabbit hole into such weirdness, such horribleness, that you have no idea how you're going to write yourself out of it.
That's where I am now, and I'm dragging poor Valkyrie with me.
You may have noticed me being pretty quiet about the American election- this is because I didn’t want to jinx the outcome.
But now I feel comfortable in finally sharing my prediction with you.
I predict a win for Biden.
BOOM.
We're trying our very best to get a movie made — but it's a long process and nothing is ever guaranteed.
But I need a distraction as I write, so everyone send in their fancasts for Skulduggery, Val, Ghastly, China, Tanith, Bliss, and Serpine. Impress me!
Hi folks! Just a heads-up about fan art — I am delighted to respond to whatever you show me on here, just so long as it isn't AI art.
I won't even REPLY to AI art, so you KNOW that everything I respond to and repost is gorgeous, human-generated stuff!
PS, I would ask you, whatever your real name is, to do us both a very big favour, and never, ever, EVER read my books again. Because I promise you, I'll be shoehorning a lot more political "agenders" into my work, just for people like you.
You muppet.
It is my birthday.
Thank you, to all the well-wishers out there.
I am enjoying some time off at the moment, but I’ll be back in circulation tomorrow and I’ll be getting back to some serious work by the weekend.
I’m lucky I love my job, I really am.
There.
Sent.
163,013 words — almost as long as Last Stand of Dead Men but not quite. A few words may get added or subtracted in the next round of edits but that's it.
Until The End is FINISHED*.
*more or less cuz no book is finished until it's published but STILL
So...!
Some time ago, my trusted editor came to me with an idea: write a Skulduggery AUDIO DRAMA — an audio play with multiple actors — that will be put out in PODCAST form (for FREE) over the summer, followed by an AUDIOBOOK version AND a PRINT version in September!
Okay, I'm not ENTIRELY sure how this happened, but Until The End is now as long as DOTL and, if I write 5000 more words, will pass LSODM to be the longest Skulduggery book.
Oops.
I see a lot of photos of bookshelves arranged by colour. It looks pretty and all, but... but how do you find a particular book? Or a particular writer?
Who would DO this?
And for the love of Zeus... WHY?
Over 4000 words written today, mostly of a scene where I get to reveal another huge secret I've been keeping for the last few years.
This is the JOY of writing a long series: the revelations you get to eke out as you go.
And this one's a GUTWRENCHER.
Astonishingly, Jeremy Clarkson has told Greta Thunberg to shut up... in his weekly newspaper column. Because of course he did. Because if he didn’t, it would damage his brand, that of a cranky old man, shaking his fists at environmentalism.
He’s just so BORING.
Just have to say, anyone who responded to yesterday's post with some variation of "all lives matter".... you bore me.
Everyone accepts that all lives matter — but all lives are not subject to the same brutality as black lives regularly are.
For the first time in YEARS a copy of a new book has arrived BEFORE it officially hits the shop shelves...!!
... just in time for me to spot two mistakes I’d missed...
Okay, so... I'm not usually one to issue proclamations about serious stuff, but I know that a lot of trans folk out there have been feeling the pressure lately, and all I can say is:
Huggggggggzzzz.
My dad, a farmer, once shot a crow that was picking at crops. Next morning he woke to a tapping at his window. He opened the curtains to find, in his words, "maybe a hundred crows" gathered outside.
(I like to imagine them staring at him with murder in their eyes.)
Well now...!
Just heard from my publishers that they are THRILLED with how Dead Or Alive has been doing — it's surpassed expectations all across the board, despite the hardships inflicted by Covid.
Thank you to EVERYONE who bought a copy, or is planning to buy a copy.
Trying to convince my brother to let me name his daughter, who is due to be born in April.
They have declined to name her Valkyrie, so I have suggested Cheetara, She-Ra and — not wishing to be restricted by gender — Skeletor.
They are considering.
18 days until my deadline and I’ve finally passed the “this is the proper length of a book” stage. Still got plenty to do, but averaging 2000 words a day should get me up to approximately 110,000 words- which is a Seasons of War sized book.
Just finished watching Black Widow and throughout the entire movie all I could think is that
@Florence_Pugh
would be brilliant casting for Tanith Low in a Skulduggery Pleasant adaption.
Random lines from Midnight:
Skulduggery tilted his head. "Aren't you? Didn't we place you under arrest? We may have forgotten. Doctor Quidnunc, you're under arrest. Put your trousers on."
I have just sent in the first draft of my next book FIVE MONTHS EARLY.
No, I will not tell you what it is.
No, I will not tell you when it's out.
No, I will not give you a hint.
But yes, I shall revel in the glory of being ahead of schedule.
Yesterday was one my dad’s grandfather/granddaughter days out, so he took my 7 yr old niece to the beach, to the playground, for ice cream, and to a funeral, because she really wanted “to see the dead man”.
She’s gonna be a writer, I can just tell...
3 things to know about AMFOM:
1- it’s set 6 yrs after UTE.
2- the plot was originally going to be completely different before I realised it HAD to be about the repercussions of what Darq did.
3-Val is in a loving, healthy relationship, so what could POSSIBLY go wrong?
I write and I write and I write and this book is still not finished. Just passed 80,000 words, though, which is a little more than Dark Days.
Unfortunately my deadline is this evening, so...
So to all you lovely Trans folk out there, and to all you lovely Non-Binary folk, and to all you Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Pansexual folk, and all of you who sit on the Gorgeous Colour Wheel of Life, from this Cis Het White Dude to you... fist-bump.
It opens with a prologue, before the Stephanie chapter, and the first line is: "Mister Bliss didn't even hear the man sent to kill him, that's how good the assassin was."
The last line is one word: "Darquesse."
