With some caveats, John Swinney's accession is the best scenario the SNP could have hoped for (and the worst for the opposition parties). My latest piece for the

Thinking about that amazing Megan Rapinoe shot and how women are taught from the earliest age to take up as little space as possible; to make ourselves invisible, so we feel both uneasy and liberated looking at it.
There are such "burn the witch" vibes from this photograph. An age-old story of men's power and men's fear. It's bleak as hell, but at the same time: hold on to that look of defiance.
I no longer care about "lost lessons" or even "lost learning": if they get through this with their spirits more or less intact that will be more than enough for me.
The Noel Clarke story is a reminder that when people say a predator was "hiding in plain sight" what they really mean is "blind eyes were turned". And that turning a blind eye is a kind of complicity.
For anyone in any doubt about the misogyny in this country, just look at that Sun front page. Absolute woman-hating garbage. Poisonous and completely unacceptable.
I am wary of the endless slagging of the BBC but this is an astonishing U-Turn. So now not only does he get to pick and choose his platforms, he is given the opportunity to exploit a terrorist attack for his own ends.
This outpouring of love for Hilary Mantel is a reminder of everything that is important but currently in short supply: beauty, craftsmanship, insight, compassion, perseverance, integrity and being true to yourself.
How could COVID passports be in any way ethical when young people, who have borne so much of the brunt of the pandemic, aren’t being offered the vaccine? It feels like their lives and futures are being treated as the lowest priority.
It does seem odd that those men who tell women they speak too much, or that what they say is worthless, or that they should be less thin or fat while saying it, should come over all perplexed and outraged when some women no longer want to say anything at all.
It's "unfortunate that this argument... has slightly overshadowed this debate" - Boris Johnson's father Stanley says he doesn't know where his son was during Channel 4's

Can't stop thinking about all these uni students. If I'd ended up away from home for the first time at 17, self-isolating amongst strangers + told I couldn't go home, even at the weekends, I'd have been a wreck.
"But society is as poorly served by those who seek to dismiss the consequence of hate – lawful or otherwise – as nothing more than 'hurt feelings', or who amplify it in pursuit of their own agenda." My
@heraldscotland
column on the Hate Crime Act.
Watching Diane Abbott stand up again & again & being ignored is devastating. The degree of contempt/racism/misogyny. How must it have felt to be treated as invisible when she was the topic of debate? And how much hypocrisy in pretending the safety of MPs is of paramount concern?
Went for a walk with my oldest and he said 'I thought you'd like to go to see the messages for Sarah on the park gates' and when we got there he'd brought a ribbon for us to tie and I am very grateful.
FFS: imagine watching all the anger that has played out today - all the hurt and the resignations and the explanations about what it means for women - and then writing this.

@RuthDavidsonMSP
has confirmed she would canvas on the doorstep for
@BorisJohnson
if he becomes Prime Minister, despite previously being one of his sharpest critics.
Still feel the Named Person provision was sabotaged for political reasons. Sure there were issues, but the broad principle was good. In a better country maybe parties could've collaborated to produce something workable instead of undermining the policy to the point of no return.
Just heard Sajid Javid boast about taking control of the so-called Channel migrant crisis as if he was organising the Dunkirk evacuation. Fuxache, what a country.
Here's my exclusive in-depth
@scotonsunday
interview with Nicola Sturgeon to mark her 50th birthday. We talked about the pandemic, party unity, resilience and approaching the menopause with trepidation.
Had an alcohol-free night last night followed by eight hours sleep, and a banging headache all day. Rest assured that's a mistake I will not be repeating.
Really glad to hear the
#MeToo
backdrop to this finally being emphasised. When people talk about conspiracies they forget how much of a watershed
#MeToo
felt at the time and how gender equality had always been high up on Sturgeon's agenda.
Top parental tip. Don't encourage your kids to debate with you, particularly about politics. They will become really good at it and then life is fecking exhausting.

Hmm - is that the same Gordon Parks, who, in 2013, said the SFA shouldn't spend £1.2m a year on "a ladies version of a game played in men's shorts"? And called investment in grassroots initiatives "PC equality propaganda."
It's impossible to get your head round. How can people look at what Boris Johnson is and does and support him in these numbers? And what does the future hold if a man who refuses all scrutiny is given carte blanche over our lives?
Here is my
@scotonsunday
column on the fall-out from the Salmond trial and the need to reclaim the grassroots of the Yes movement from the conspiracy theorists.
So I inadvertently bought my youngest boxer shorts with a special pouch for smuggling drugs into festivals and I don’t think the older two will ever stop laughing.
I understand the economic arguments but on a visceral, human, exhausted level I just can’t get my head round how Edinburgh Hogmanay can go ahead while some of us are being guilt-tripped out of seeing a couple of pals.
I do worry all these "people are seeing the benefits of working from home" posts are going to be used to justify not reopening offices. There are pluses, but it's harder to separate your working + non-working life. I'm not sure that will be great for mental health.
It's nothing in the greater scheme of things, but still a nice morale boost to discover I've won the features writer category at the
@ScotPressAwards
. Congratulations to
@wornoutmumhack
who won the Nicola Barry award and
@Mel_ReidTimes
who won columnist. Both brilliant writers.
In my long-read written after Alex Salmond's acquittal on all charges, I wrote: "It is clear [he] is on the warpath. The question is how far will he go? Is he willing to set fire to the house he built, just to watch his enemies burn?" I guess this is the day of reckoning.
This has been the most emotional week of my professional life for many reasons. It is an utter privilege to be a journalist. I never want to do anything else. But there are so many talented writers in Scotland. I just wish there were more resources and platforms for everyone. X
The award for Feature Writer of the Year goes to
@DaniGaravelli1
of Scotland on Sunday and Tortoise.
@BrokerJonathan

My God, this lying/innuendo is never going to end. I was 15 days in court, not 8, plus 3 prelim hearings, many interviews before + after, 3 days to write + yes, Tortoise paid for all that (2nd legalling done by SoS). Why would anyone be surprised at me being paid to do my job?
Legaling a piece is expensive. Legaling a piece several times is very expensive.
8 days of Dani Garavelli in court. Then interviews with 5 discredited accusers, say 3 days to write it up.
Who paid for all this, and why, I wondered. Answer is not just Tortoise.

The two complainers initially declined to give evidence to the committee because they had witnessed the earlier leaks and didn't trust members to make their welfare a priority...
Can we stop talking about Corbyn's "stupid woman" comment, please? It's odious, but it's a distraction from other more important things. Like the end of free movement and the refusal to recognise the value of/need for immigration.
I am beyond happy to have won the inaugural Anne Brown Essay Prize which is providing a brilliant and much-needed forum for long-form non-fiction. I can’t wait to read the other essays. Congratulations to

long-read on the fall-out from the Salmond allegations and everything that followed: the impact on the complainers, the party, the independence movement and all women who have suffered harassment.
Realise this has been talked about all day but it really is shocking that the framing + leaking of the Grenfell report puts all the emphasis on fire brigade failings. At every stage, blame has been deflected from the gov + many journalists seem willing to go along with this.
This criticism of the Sunday Times piece - "Oh, we knew that already" - is misplaced. We knew it instinctively, and we had some evidence of course, but what good journalism does is to pin it down, to lay out every detail out so there is no mistake, no wriggling off the hook.
Going to log off for a while now as I have work to do, but one thing that intrigues me is the way in which people will say: "But it's worse in England," as if injustices inflicted on English kids alleviate damage done here.
I tried to thank everyone individually for tweeting my AS trial piece yesterday, and for kind comments, but realise I failed miserably, so this is just a general tweet to express my gratitude for all the kind messages.
"What tilts the balance towards accepting the First Minister’s account for me is I find it difficult to
think of any convincing reason why if she had in fact recalled the meeting she would have deliberately concealed it while disclosing all the conversations she
had had with AS]"
On International Women's Day, I spoke to Claire Mitchell, the Siouxsie-loving QC campaigning to right a great historic miscarriage of justice: the false accusation and execution of Scotland's "witches".
How do you begin to change anything when these words can come out of a police and crime commissioner's mouth without him dying of shame? That's how entrenched the problem is.
Just when you think the absurdity of victim blaming could not possibly go any further, here is a Police Commissioner openly blaming Sarah Everard for what happened to her on BBC radio

The Met is utterly dysfunctional - an embarrassment of a police force. The scandals are just piling up and - like Johnson - Cressida Dick doesn't appear the least bit ashamed.
“I put my shoes on and sprinted out. I just thought: ‘You’re not going to do that in front of me.’ There is due process and this is not it.” Terrific report by

Jeezo - how many times? Women aren't attracted to low-paying jobs. The jobs are low-paying because they have traditionally attracted women.
Do you know what I miss? People lifting the phone. I mean professionally not personally. Some days it feels like endless email exchanges stretching over hours to resolve stuff that could have been sorted out in a three minute conversation.
In a cafe yesterday, I was served by a lad who'd been about to get his acting break when the pandemic struck + the play was cancelled. He said he was reading lots + had just discovered Ingmar Bergman. Don't know why I'm recounting this, other than, please stop dissing young folk.
"Inside, stalls offer faux German market wares: snowman snow globes & fudge that looks as if it has been lying in state since the death of Queen Victoria." My
@heraldscotland
column on the mess of WinterFest & the commercialisation of our civic spaces.
So the drug deaths figures for 2019 are as bad as anticipated- a governmental failure with a catastrophic human cost. It’s a national emergency. Treat it, fund it as such. And stop passing the buck.
I really didn't want to respond to the backlash, but it is difficult when you are being traduced to just sit back and take it. My piece has been legalled several times and I have been assured there is nothing in it that constitutes a contempt of court.

Been thinking about my dad a lot because Brexit. Here's a bit of something he wrote about his journey to Scotland when he was trying to perfect his English. Solidarity to all immigrants who left home with hope in their hearts + are now having to prove themselves all over again.
Whenever I feel I might lose my bearings over the Salmond affair - and I often do - I focus on this: the first two complaints were brought by non party political civil servants one of whom the former FM had already apologised to.
Have decided each of my kids has to cook one meal a week. This is proving interesting but expensive. "I need sirloin steak for this recipe." Do you, aye?
Extraordinary that the documentaries on Princess Latifa and Britney Spears should be aired on the same night so we can see that, more than 100 years after Camille Claudel, women are still being locked up/controlled by male relatives on the pretext of mental health problems.
“There are some people whose egos don’t allow them to exit the stage when the time is right for the sake of other people and, I would argue, for his own dignity." My exclusive

interview with Nicola Sturgeon.
