Wendy Wu Homecoming Warrior was trying to tell y’all that your investments in whiteness at the expense of your ethnic cultures will ultimately lead to the destruction of your culture and world unless you fight back.
Okay, this will be an ongoing thread as I watch but
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of why Ezra Fitz is one of the most dangerous characters on TV.
Starting with ‘innocence’ written beside him in a scene where he pressures aria in class and then berates another student

White people aren’t raised with an understanding of their oppression and the dynamics of it. So when they’re queer or neurodivergent or otherwise marginalized they obsess over identification because they don’t know how else to recognize, acknowledge, & resist their oppression 1/6
Do you understand how insane this is given the history of the CW? Or more accurately-- given the loss of UPN and The WB
So many Black shows lost and replaced with pale shows like this and it hasn't been profitable since the year it was created?!?!
THREAD:
When he ‘finds out’ Aria is his student, he doesn’t just say “we can’t do this.”
Instead he constantly repeats that *he wants to* but can’t. This creates an us-against-them in Arias mind.
Ie, Age isn’t the issue, it’s other people
Seth Rogan voiced a hot dog named Frank in a movie called Sausage Party and has been engaged in a back and forth with United States Senator Ted Cruz.
At every step of the way Seth Rogan has been the sane, humane, and correct one.
First two things
1. I’m going to update as I watch so I’ll refer only to what we know at that point in watching it.
2. I would like to apologize to my middle school administrators. When you told parents we shouldn’t be watching this, you were right!
He kisses her at Ali’s funeral, offers his apartment as a space when her parents separate, shows up at her SATs, lingers around her school dance, etc.
All the while he doesn’t mention the very public investigation into her friends murder.
Identification is already a shock to their world view. Recognizing that whiteness has not saved them from white people, white supremacy, white society— all of which create marginalization through rejection of the “other”
2/6
Their otherhood becomes central because their whiteness was. They begin to reject any awareness of their own complicity. It girds against their belief: whiteness is the gift of freedom from oppression, if I’m oppressed I lose both that gift and the curses of whiteness. 3/6
Aria had to keep the secret of her fathers cheating for a year. Then, once it’s all revealed, she keeps being told she’s too young to understand her parents choices.
She turns to Fitz to validate how ‘adult’ the burden has made her feel.
Namely, they lose the “curse” of accountability. Meanwhile, within those marginalized spaces, they continue to assert their whiteness. They don’t move away from racial hierarchy, rather they move into spaces where they are not othered within the “superior” white tier. 4/6
And so white others imagine themselves different than general whites but actually *exemplify* colonial tenacity and the hardwired training to be at the top of hierarchy. They aren’t an exception, they’re the rule. The rule holding strong in the face of othering 6/6
With the way she speaks to and about her parents it’s clear that Aria’s been shouldering a lot of emotional burden. Her fathers secrets for her mothers feelings. She’s mikes emotional caregiver.
Ezra acted like an adult romantic relationship to match her adult familial burdens
But they want brownie points for identification. Again, it upended their world view to accept what non-whites are taught as children. They want credit. So don’t hold that queer person accountable for racism. Don’t ask your non-binary roommate to pay the bills. Don’t push! 5/6
I think the audio is gone? But in this scene
-She leaves a birthday party to meet him
-He points out that this actively disrupts her from them chance of an appropriate relationship
-His solution is to switch school districts rather than end the relationship
Even Tyler James Williams, star of Everybody Hates Chris has had things to say about it
"the death of UPN 'created a void' of Black media that wouldn't be filled again until Hollywood's current re-awakening to diversity"
Just fucked that when will smith slapped one idiot the world is traumatized for months but when police kill black people on camera they retweet it for me to see and then get activism fatigue from it. They really don’t care about us, they just want us to smile and entertain.

In Abbott Elementary, Greggory’s feelings for Jeanine are more than a crush more than a like like more than a love! He’s like shawty you got fire but I’m preaching to the choir, I know you know the whole world is watching you.
I did a huge look at Black Woman Led Live Action TV series 2015-2022 and YIKES!
Few shows ever get 3 season. Remove outliers (ex. Scandal) and it’s 2 seasons or less.
And when they’re *made* by Black women they’re higher rated but get less seasons
Some data snapshots 🧵:
Insecure over, Rap Shit cancelled, High Fidelity cancelled, Run the World cancelled, Smothered s2 not even in sight, like I just wanna watch fun shows starring black women
One on One, Girlfriends, America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, Smart Guy, The Wayan's brothers, Sister, Sister, etc
Black audiences were given the opportunity to choose between a wide variety and their choice was clear: if they felt stereotyped they were out
I get annoyed when film people will do talks about how “we all carry cameras in our pockets now! Anyone can make a movie!” And “anyone can write, just do it!”
Sure, but how much does the industry standard software cost? How much will it cost to submit to competitions/festivals?
So the CW was created in 2006, betrayed black viewers because they decided they weren't profitable enough, and then continued not to be profitable without ever questioning their shift
So this is to say that the CW was created
-- off the backs of Black audiences
-- As a direct betrayal to those audiences
-- And it immediately whitened its programming
And it chose to continue on that path despite a lack of profits.
And when arias friends find out 😬 They can’t navigate the boundaries when she says “Ezra” and he’s “Mr. Fitz” to them. They feel betrayed. She’s uncomfortable with their jokes. School moments are awkward.
ADULTS SHOULDNT KEEP SECRETS WITH CHILDREN. EVER. THANK YOU.
I love Levar Burton for this bc Smart House teaches you how the idea of a women’s role in the home that was popularized in the 50s is a creation of television that isn’t sustainable for any real person without them cultivating rage
And so much more, I love smart house
I just did an essay on this so you're getting details.
In 1994 UPN and The WB were both started. They were smaller upstart networks but they were backed by huge corporations (Paramount and Warner Brothers). They did something most networks weren't at the time
As Gene Demby puts it:
"It was the upstart networks... that seriously doubled down on Black viewers in a bid to become commercially viable as quickly as possible. The result was a kind of alternate TV universe where you could find Black folks on-screen seemingly every night"
OH YEAH! I forgot to add this! He specifically kicks her out of his apartment and closes the door on her face after he sees an A text on HER phone.
The shaming was very clear: keep our secret or I will ice you out.
@DaejahTalksTv
I was just thinking about the episode where A sends Ezra a message and then he goes off at Aria because he thinks she told her friends and then says she's not mature enough to handle the relationship 🥴. Like yeah duh she's a child 😭. God I hate this man
In this scene, Noel tries for the second time to blackmail Ezra for a better grade after discovering the relationship. Ezra takes a moral stance against that but not statutory rape.
They put a halo over his head and showed “corruption of the American dream” as Noel approached
People forget that historically the push for STEM education in the United States was to feed the war machine.
Now half my friends who were introduced to STEM (esp. E) as a passionate and innovative option are depressed to realize their real options are the military or academia.
One of the things Chitiga's work proves is that Black viewers have an intimate understanding of the stereotypes that affect them and could also recognize the power of the shows that defied stereotypes.
That's what UPN and The WB gave them with shows like...
If you want more on how those depictions of black people changed the landscape you can read this paper where Miriam chitiga interview black people in 2003 and collects their responses to Black sitcoms
BUT BACK TO THE RANT
But then UPN and The WB simply weren't making enough money.
To many white pundits, the change was mostly aesthetic but Black viewers lost so much. The scripted shows carried over in the merger were mostly white and the Black ones didn't last long
By 2008 Fox, The WB, and UPN were all either defunct or had shifted their focus away from Black viewers. There’s no reason to assume that this was a coincidence.
Most Black television had disappeared and Black viewers simply moved to the only shows they had— white ones.
Essentially arguing that these networks didn't LEAVE Black viewers, there was just no difference in what Black people wanted to see and what non-Black people did-- it was all white led.
But this isn’t a chicken and the egg situation. We know the order of events.
Considering the heads of both networks were white men, these shows were generally not designed by Black people but they were FOR Black people.
The gap between viewer and executive meant the power to determine the show's longevity lacked cultural understanding of its value
Some people will argue something like this:
“By 2008, the viewing habits of Black viewers and white viewers were converging once more. With few "Black shows" on broadcast TV, everyone was watching American Idol, Dancing With the Stars or CSI." (Gene Demby)
@heather_m_s
It’s so terrible! Within 10 episodes her sister is marrying a man who kissed Spencer when she was ~13 and they all act like it’s Spencer fault. They all but called her fast.
Regardless of how stupid this is, tweets like this that imply transness is something to be vigilant and fearful of propagate so much harm
“Careful fellas” “watch out men” “they got new tricks” cut it out
Trans and gnc people aren’t trying to get you. They just want to live.
I’ve wanted to coin a phrase since I was a kid and I finally have one
“That’s a hurdle for another turtle”
It’s not my problem, I’ve just got to focus on me an my own pace
Tired of the “feminist master piece! This one is for the girls!” movies that are actually just white women doing the things that white men do.
Oh she finishes and he doesn’t?? She goes on a killing spree when she snaps?? Okay and what does that accomplish. Answer quickly.
This (and the forced outing that sometimes comes with it) is why Ayo Edibiri is choosing not to publicly disclose define her sexuality and I’m so grateful for that because fuck this.
So here’s the trick to dealing with celebrities “queerbaiting”
1. Don’t care about other people’s sexualities enough to feel “led on”
2. Don’t feel entitled to know someone’s sexuality
3. Calm down
The Academy has officially decided that rape, sexual assault, sexual violence, racism, etc. are acceptable from their members but a single open palmed slap from a Black guy who used to rhyme is unacceptable
If any professors see this: when your getting ready for the Spring I would much rather a kinder syllabus that a pity bump in grades at the end. The whole “suffer but it’s okay in the end” model is not it.
Having two bachelorettes this season is a bold choice, having 2 bachelorettes who seem like they’ve explored each other’s bodies is another thing altogether. This is freaking insane
I’m reminding y’all before midnight hits that Black people do not celebrate the Fourth of July. We celebrate good weather and a day off.
…or whatever Fredrick Douglass said
But as an audience, the first season has already made it clear that Jacob really means well. And in general, these messy messy people can make a world of difference in these kids life. That little girl got to introduce herself in her own language!

Wait one more thing. Barbara’s point that they can’t do it all but they do what they can feels so topical w Jacob. He cannot give that girl the fully accessible education she deserves, he simply doesnt have the range. But even his lib ass does SOMETHING and many won’t
I didn’t want to say it until it was definitely true but through supportive ppl, friends, one member of parliament, a congressman, many UPS/UKVI/VFS customer service people, my family, and a professor who thought it’d be cruel for me to lose this chance…
IM IN SCOTLAND
So… I’m pretty broken rn. UPS lost my passport. I spent weeks being told things were “processing” because no one told me the package never arrived.
It costs hundred for a rush passport so if you can support this fund I’d appreciate it 1/2
TW: Suicidal Ideation
Tonight is exactly a year since the last time I wanted to kill myself and didn't. This also means it's the first year since age 15 without wanting to die.
I couldn't be happier that I am still here
If you needed a reminder today: please stick around
“People of Color” is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever adopted into my vocabulary. I tried it. We all have been trying. But it’s just rebranding “coloreds.” It doesn’t even make sense
It has always been the case that boycotting Starbucks was:
— because of their Union busting and racist policies
— because of their choice to oust pro-Palestine employees
— meant to be done in addition to BDS but not a central target
Why does this keep having to be repeated
Ryan Murphy responds to “Dahmer” backlash: “I also don’t think that all gay stories have to be happy gay stories. There was a moment on Netflix where they removed the LGBTQ tag from ‘Dahmer’… but it was a story about a gay man and more importantly his gay victims.”
Jacob is a ball of good intentions and unresolved savior complex issues. The way he speaks about learning ASL as though he’s a hero is played for comedy AND we see it as a part of his savior behavior. It’s funny but it’s clearly negative.
White ppl stop apologizing for your whiteness. You want me to grant you the gift of forgiveness. You want me to assuage your discomfort. You want me to say you’re different.
When you apologize for being white you’re asking something of me. And I’m not going to give it to you.
There are a few Black women I’ve been following since I was a teen who were so instrumental in me seeing my place in media. In the past few years I’ve watched them flourish and their wins tell me I can make it. Thread w 3 of these amazing people and what they do 👇🏾
I think it’s sick that three years ago half of y’all loved and admired Gen-Z but only because of us losing our youth in activism. Now it’s all strays, many from the generation that wanted to riot when journalists made fun of their avocado toast.
Going to a PWI is hell.
I just sat through a film class as white people discussed how they would choose loyalty to a friend over “abstract concepts”
The abstract concept in question was that friend being responsible for the death of 11 afghani civilians
I’ll never forget reading an article in maybe June 2020 where scientists were like ‘yeah if we could have a true lockdown and everyone stood still for a month and tested, we can beat this. We just need a real enforced lockdown.’
…Now I still mask in 2024
Fr we didn’t have “lockdowns” ppl were flocking to Florida for spring break ppl were specifically having ‘covid parties’ with the intention to spread it. Ppl were having mask burning events.
I feel like we don’t talk enough about the amazing job costume designers for comic book movies/shows do in taking goofy costumes and making them badass
We have to stop assuming every movie with a salient theme must have a groundbreaking message.
Wealth/greed/power-struggle are common themes in murder mysteries.
We were never offered revolutionary; just a return to whodunnit classics, and that’s been delivered
Getting pissy because your movie got released on streaming DURING A PANDEMIC THAT WE ARE STILL IN is truly rich people problems. I still hope Disney loses something but I want the record to reflect this is all annoying to me
