My mom took me to Kentucky from upstate NY in 1977. I was 16. Saw some pretty remarkable TBs, including then 7-year-old Secretariat at Claiborne Farm (Round Table was in a nearby paddock...he was cool, too!). Will always be grateful to my mom for this trip and so much more.

Goodbye, WILD ON ICE, who suffered a fatal injury while working this AM. The beautiful TX-bred Tapizar gelding, who most recently won the Sunland Park Derby, was owned by Frank Sumpter, trained by Joel Marr, and ridden by Ken Tohill. Condolences to all who loved him.

When Irad Ortiz's mount stumbled today at Belmont, and Irad fell, his brother Jose Ortiz and also Junior Alvarado ran down the track to their brother/friend. It was a strong reminder of how both dangerous being a jockey is - and how much love there is in the jockey community.

They met during a 2018 Make-A-Wish trip @godolphin , when a then-unnamed foal came up to Cody Dorman and put his head in Cody's lap. Cody and now-G1W Cody's Wish visited again today at Keeneland. 💜Race-ready, Cody's Wish moved right up to his namesake and dipped down to say hi.

The morning after A.P. INDY won the Belmont, he was posed for the great photographer Tony Leonard. Tony allowed us to shoot alongside, asking that we wait to post the photos until after Tony's death. He'd done all the work; we were fine with it. Still grateful for this chance.

For those who've asked (and those who haven't), Ivan Sanjuan's pony who kept superb pace with a loose horse last week at Saratoga is PAPA TOM. Born in 2009, PAPA TOM had 63 starts with 2 wins, 6 seconds, 6 thirds. Ivan is justifiably very proud of him.

A.P. INDY (3-31-89 - 2-21-20), one of racing's most exciting racehorses and then one of its most influential stallions, died earlier today at age 31 his longtime @LanesEndFarms home. But how grand he was! A.P. Indy's 1992 Belmont Stakes win

I'm on a white Thoroughbred kick recently (oh, and since 1979, when I saw Clarence Stewart, the white TB). Here are some Megson Farms' broodmares in early May. They just happened to be grazing that way...a magical sight.

Goodbye, ZIPPY CHIPPY, who never won a single race from hundred starts - but lived out his life a beloved champion. Condolences to all who loved him, including his caregivers at @OldFriendsCC , who have announced his death at age 31.

CODY'S WISH (Curlin - Dance Card, by Tapit) looked wowzaaaaaa galloping this morning @santaanitapark for trainer Bill Mott. The few times I saw him at Saratoga this autumn, the 4x G1W Godophin homebred looked similarly strong. 🍀 #BreedersCup

TERLINGUA (Secretariat - Crimson Saint, by Crimson Satan), at age 31 at Overbrook Farm. She was a brilliant quick racehorse for trainer Wayne Lukas, but she's of course much better remembered for her 1983 foal, STORM CAT.

Man o' War, still grand despite a bit of extra white hair near his temple, somewhere between 1945-47 (age 28-30). Photographer James W. Sames III listed those years on a stack of Man o' War negatives. The pride and life in Man o' War's eyes...😍 He died in 1947 at age 30.

Hmmm, I wonder how @nmrhof hero SILVER CHARM feels about sharing his beautiful @Oldfriendsfarm barn with the awesome AWESOME AGAIN nowadays? After all, AWESOME AGAIN won both the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic and Stephen Foster - beating Silver Charm, who was second both times.
