The deluge on Monday was overwhelming, but not for the Anacostia Tunnel System💪! The data is in, and the tunnel captured 170 MILLION GALLONS of combined sewage that otherwise would have flowed directly into the Anacostia River! 📸:
@scott_brawley
The rainy weather this month put our new tunnels to the test again. The data's in - the system captured over 200 MILLION gals of combined sewage that otherwise would have ended up in the Anacostia, enough to fill RFK Stadium to the top! Not to mention all the trash collected.
Here is some of the flow through the Northeast Boundary Tunnel during
#Ophelia
on Saturday. In all, 137M gallons of combined stormwater & sewage was captured and conveyed to Blue Plains for treatment. There were no measured overflows into the Anacostia River.
Late Breaking News! Commissioning of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel is complete as of today. The tunnel and all related diversion facilities are in service! We will celebrate with the community soon!
The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is almost operational! As we work to bring it online, here is one more peak inside. It is 5-miles long, 23 ft in diameter, 100 ft deep and will provide 90M gallons of storage to reduce flooding and combined sewer overflows to the Anacostia River.
Imagine a tunnel 100 feet deep, 13 miles long and 23 feet wide, FILLED with rushing storm water and sewage. The Anacostia River Tunnel was in action yesterday! We recorded 267 million gallons of water captured, and more water is still being pumped from the tunnel now.
The Anacostia Tunnel System opened one year ago today. Since then it has captured close to 5 billion gallons of combined sewage that otherwise would have flowed into the
#AnacostiaRiver
. The 90% capture rate is even better than expected.
High marks for our deep tunnels during
#Ida
. Preliminary data shows they captured 88 million gallons of combined sewage and stormwater. That's 100% of what otherwise would have overflowed into the Anacostia River.
DC Water issues a boil water advisory for some customers in NW. We advise customers to not drink or cook with their water without first boiling it for one minute. The earliest the advisory will be lifted is Sunday, Jan 21. Visit for map of impacted areas.

Here's the culprit. This is the hole in the 36" water line that led to the boil water advisory. We are pleased to report crews were able to complete repairs overnight. The steel main at 13th and Spring Rd NW was installed in 1936.
During today’s heavy rainstorm, the Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a big help to the DC sewer system. The tunnel began operating on September 15, 2023 and adds up to 90 million gallons of storage. The addition reduces the risk of flooding and wastewater overflow to the Anacostia.
We can’t tell our twins apart. It’s either Flotsam or Jetsam, our skimmer boats, picking up both types of floating debris on the Anacostia today.

Last night the Clean Rivers Tunnel System captured ~120M gallons of combined sewage, keeping it out of the Anacostia River. We are treating that flow now and preparing for the next storm.
This video - from testing in Feb - shows how much water we're talking about.
Following two consecutive days of clear samples, DC Water is lifting the Boil Water Advisory for all customers. You can now use tap water after running cold-water taps for 10 minutes before returning to normal water usage. Running the cold-water tap will replace water
Our new tunnel system doesn't just capture stormwater and sewage. It also keeps tons of trash out of the Anacostia. Here is some of what we have collected.

8/29 FINAL UPDATE - Great news for the morning commute: together with
@DDOTDC
we have completed the restoration of the SB 3rd Street Tunnel and all lanes will reopen at approximately 11 pm tonight.

Tunnel update! Since March of this year, the Anacostia River Tunnel has prevented ~1.7 BILLION gallons of combined sewage and 140 TONS of trash from entering the Anacostia! That's including the 368 MILLION gallons of overflow from the rain this weekend! 💧
As we brace for Tropical Storm
#Ophelia
the Northeast Boundary Tunnel stands ready to help reduce overflows to the Anacostia River and mitigate neighborhood flooding. It can hold up to 90M gallons of stormwater and sewage.

The Anacostia River Tunnel saved the river from 4.5 billion gallons of sewage overflow in 2018, a year that goes into the books as the wettest year on record since 1889.

UPDATE 8:23 AM 7/15 The boil water advisory has been lifted for all customers. If you were in the affected area, run the cold water taps for 10 minutes (if water was not used at all during the advisory).

Amongst the madness, DC Water still has a responsibility to serve the residents of the District of Columbia. Hats off to sewer services working hard today to unblock a sewer line reported by a resident.
Here’s a photo that shows just how far back our infrastructure dates. This Boundary Sewer, built in 1885, is still in operation today and is fully functional, but for how long 🤔? Water & sewer infrastructure requires investment.
#BuildForTomorrow
It’s been a rainy week, putting our new Clean Rivers tunnel to good use! From Sunday–Thursday, the Anacostia Tunnel prevented 249M gallons of combined sewage from entering the river. Great way to end

We are aware of the reports of low or no water pressure in some Northwest neighborhoods. We are investigating the cause and a potential break/leak at 31st Street and Aberfoyle Place.
Update - To clarify, there is NO CONFIRMED drinking water contamination. As a precaution, we advise affected customers to boil water as a loss of pressure in the pipe system makes it possible for water contamination.
