Lots of fake-news posts.
But this is one of the better ones.
The photo below couldn't look less like Ocala, Florida if it was shot in outer space.
But sure, like and share away.

Today's
@MiamiHerald
front page: My story about how Wendell Nibbs was able to keep his job after girl after girl came forward alleging he was a predator.
This story took 3 months to report while still covering education news in South Florida. Read here:
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue told the City Council that they usually transport 10 people a year to the hospital.
They've transported 300 people in the past 10 days.
"Is that sustainable?" asks chair Ed Montanari.
"No," replies division chief Ian Womack.
St. Petersburg, a city where Black cops couldn't patrol white neighborhoods & Black people couldn't sit on green benches, elected:
Its 1st Black mayor
Its 1st Hispanic City Council member
(possibly) its 1st Democratic Socialist & Black City Council member north of Central Ave
This was an extremely difficult story to write, from the heinous, blood-curdling allegations made by disenfranchised young women to the web of investigations spanning a decade.
We'll be following up on this story. Consider subscribing here:
news: Today is my last day
@miamiherald
. It's been the honor of a lifetime serving my hometown paper and my community. It's a dream I had since 17. Thank you to every teacher, student, source and reader who helped make my work possible. I am beyond grateful. Thank you, thank you.
Four talented, passionate journalists in three days have told me they are considering quitting/leaving the industry because conditions are that stressful/unsustainable/unfulfilling.
Be kind to a journalist today.
I asked a School Board candidate why he's running, what qualifies him for the School Board & what he does for a living.
His first response was that those questions are not related to the School Board race and then said that it sounds like I'm working on a hit piece.

Y’all. After 2 1/2 years, today is my last day at the Tampa Bay Times. I’m going home to cover education for the
@MiamiHerald
. The Herald is dear to my heart as it was my first internship, which I started in high school. Here’s my press pass from 2010 (thread)
Ya know, both things can be true. A country can be beautiful and welcoming and prosperous for one group of people. Armando — and my family — are in that group.
That same country continues to kill generations of another group of people for the color of their skin.
Ryan Tannehill says the United States of America “was founded upon racist ideas...”
I am so sick of the America bashing by people who have never lived and would never live anywhere else.
It should be clear — and sadly it STILL isn’t clear to my colleague — black lives matter.
What if we made this country just as welcoming/prosperous/SAFE for everyone else?
Armando’s tweet is so gaslighting & as a
@MiamiHerald
reporter, I am so sorry. Our readers deserve better.
Today marks 10 years — a decade! — since I walked into One Herald Plaza as a high school intern.
I wouldn't be where I am — who I am — today without that opportunity. I want to talk a little bit about
@MiamiHerald
& why we need to save it.
my old press pass👇🏽(LONG thread ahead)

BREAKING NEWS: South Florida is now under a tropical storm watch, and the National Hurricane Center predicts Isaias will approach Florida and the Bahamas as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday.
Here at the Florida City FEMA vaccination site and a man came out and said what was said yesterday: that a state senator cannot override the governors. “What you’re seeing on Facebook is fake news.”
He’s enforcing the rules of being a teacher/firefighter or have a medical note
Marley Price's boyfriend likes to play video games
She prefers to find potentially illegal short term rentals in St. Petersburg & report them to code enforcement
Since Feb, she's filed 108 complaints. 88 were in violation. Her tweet about it went viral
as an obnoxious 2nd gen, full-blood miamian i have a million stories about the 305 so here's one for today:

As you read about how executives & celebrities paid exorbitant amounts to someone to correct their kids' SAT/ACT scores or straight up take the test for them, remember Kamilah Campbell. She improved 330 pts on her SAT to a 1230 & was flagged for cheating
in one of the most Democratic cities in Florida, with a Dem mayor and a council that is 7/8 Dems, council member & democratic socialist Richie Floyd is the only elected who has said something publicly about the overturn of Roe.
Breaking:
@MiamiSup
says every

high school will have a physical, in-person graduation ceremony between June 1 - June 9. There will be three locations revolving around FIU and Miami-Dade County youth fair that provide for enough space. Details will be published this weekend
Fewer than 30% of city's first responders are vaccinated.
St. Petersburg City Hall is considering a mandatory vaccination policy. A decision will come by next council meeting. Also being considered - declaring state of emergency.
I'm heading back to
@TB_Times
to take over the St. Petersburg City Hall beat from my dear friend
@ByJoshSolomon
. I've got big shoes to fill & I'm excited to chronicle a new era in a city I've been in love with for a long time. shoutout to

uh oh guys he's going to sue me!!!!!! for asking him, a candidate running for a publicly elected position, why he's qualified for the job!

do you think they own a major metro newspaper i used to work at??
Council member Brandi Gabbard, mom of 10yo, “I am terrified. We can’t do mask mandates. Schools aren’t empowered to make best decisions for them. ... We’re begging people 2 get vaccinated &save our kids. It’s really just shocking tht ppl won’t do what’s right 2 protect all of us”
Hey TV/national media, here's a pro-tip: Do not contact local newspaper reporters through any medium, especially on their personal Facebook account, to ask them to connect you with sources. This makes you lazy. Do your own reporting/basic Googling & stop piggybacking.
Beginning Monday,
@MDCPS
is launching a community feeding plan. Every school will be open from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. so students can have access to a free, nutritious hot meals for breakfast and lunch.
2 yrs ago, I reported on a charter school operator who defrauded school boards of millions of $$ by selling inflated goods to his schools. Those schools shut down & left 1,000 Pinellas students stranded
Today, Marcus May was sentenced to 20 yrs in prison
went out on assignment yesterday for the first time in forever, so I put on makeup and stained my mask. Anyway, I got this shot by the inimitable
@aldiazphoto
Florida's had an increase of 300k cases since early June update. Majority are in the past 30 days.
Pinellas has 89,699 total cases as of last Friday. During that past week, 4,164 reported. "That number is one of the highest that we’ve seen since the beginning of the pandemic."

In today's story I quoted a Coral Reef Senior High IB teacher who was retiring after 44 years
“The year didn’t end with a bang. It ended with a whimper.”
Her students read my story and surprised her today with a drive-by parade. She got flowers, cards & the sendoff she deserved
FEMA/police breaking up people between the wait list line from yesterday and today’s line.
There seems to be another separate group for 65+ and there’s about 10-12 of them.
There are easily 200+ people.

Sometimes I get emails asking why I haven't covered X issue. Sometimes that issue is on my list of stories I am working on.
My story list often looks like the struggle olympics. What do you prioritize? COVID info? Accountability/transparency? Bad cops? Racism? Sexual assault?
Hi, I broke the story at the Miami Herald in 2019 on
#WendellNibbs
which has resurfaced following
@CharlieCrist
's pick of
@KarlaforFlorida
for LG.
Both sides have gotten facts wrong about ties between Hernandez-Mats and Nibbs. Let me clarify:
One more thing I’ll toot my horn about tonight.
I made a whole freakin’ meal during all of this. Rosemary lamb chops, pan baked veggies a la
@nytimes
Cooking and key lime pie.
I'm a stickler for open government. This has happened a few times
@StPeteFL
.
Meetings should not start before the public is allowed in the bldg.
A committee meeting on *protecting abortion rights* began while myself & others were outside waiting for city hall to open.
Not cool
Back in June, weekly percent positivity was ~2%. Last week - 16.7%.
Cases increased 55% this week over last week. Hospitals are stressed. Admissions up 65% over prior week.
51% of all St. Pete residents are fully vaccinated. Vaccination rates are 10% higher than June.
Many journalists including myself have thought that newsrooms would be next.
We see it. We can nearly feel it. We can imagine ourselves as
@capitalgazette
. We're in awe that they're working through this, but not surprised. It's how we roll. Nothing will stop us.
"Wade is the reason many South Florida kids came to love sports. Our city is filled with people in their 20s who only know how good winning can feel because Dwyane Wade taught them."
I'm one of those kids. Thank you,
@LeBatardShow
. We love you,

@FloridaGOP
is wrong for saying Hernandez-Mats accompanied Nibbs in investigations. I have the names of the stewards who represented him, and she wasn't among them. That never happened. It is a union's job to represent their members.
CDC says Pinellas has a high level of COVID transmission. So are 66/67 Florida counties.
Pinellas is giving out 4,600 vaccines in a week.
Dr. Wojnowich: "It’s not the ventilators. It’s the morale. (We had a) quiet couple months. We were safe and ok."
On a related note, a family member last night told me there’s so much bad news out there, why can’t the good news be reported?
You don’t read those stories. No one reads those stories. We know. We have the metrics. You’d rather click on something silly or salacious. We see you.
The weirdest part about covering my hometown is that this beat keeps making me relive childhood stuff. I was asked to cover the Miami-Dade Spelling Bee today & all I'm thinking about is how I made it to the finalists' round (when you get to be on stage) only to misspell "motif."
it is my professional opinion that hurricanes/storms should only make landfall on business days and not on weekends especially when the

are in town
Already up above Tropicana Field Lot 2 next to I-275. Renaud Brossard, Quebec Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation flew down just for this. The group spent $1,300 on the ad and it’ll be up for a week. “Long enough to send a message.”
Two things
1) I’m one person, unfortunately. I’d love a few clones
2) Not really fair to compare how private schools are doing when they only have their own school to deal with vs 300+ schools in the fourth largest school district in the U.S.
I totally blocked this out until just now but this happened to me. Lawmakers were told to go to a secure room and I asked a police officer if there was one for press/staff or if I could go with Reps. I was told no and just started aimlessly walking around Longworth for a bit
