QUENTON NELSON after 5 games is
@PFF
#1
rated GUARD. This is perfect flat back leverage. Fit, Drive, Lift and PANCAKE. He’s the best OG I’ve seen since HOF JOHN HANNAH!
SAD. I’m at a JV High School game. One team has 39 players and 14 cheerleaders ... but only 44 fans in their stands. Those of us who had parents and family watch EVERY single high school game we played ... are so blessed.
KEVIN MAWAE (HOF19) taught me this drill. By putting the pole behind the arms the player learns how to arch his back and anchor. Nice work by MATT HENNESSY (Temple) and ZANE BEADLES (NFL vet). MATT will be a top draft prospect this spring.
HEART ATTACK. Yeah.True story. 14 days ago. Great ER TEAM saved me, “stented” me up ... as good as new. Lucky and I’ve reconciled my purpose: So much more to share ... when we die we can’t take our gifts and knowledge with us. And so I tweet. Grateful to give forward.
CAVE MAN WALK. I do this drill of re-setting into stance after each step to teach blockers to keep their knees bent when they step. This drill doesn’t allow them to STAND UP and play HIGH. Gavin Watts and Brady Huegen, Brees Central IL
JONAH WILLIAMS is the most mature, NFL psych ready player I’ve met since Andrew Whitworth. Full disclosure: I worked with him this offseason. Nonetheless, he’s will be terrific. YES he’s a LT. Can stop, start and govern his speed with athleticism A foundation piece.
more QUENTON NELSON. He REALLY understands leverage. Blocking isn’t Hit and Lift. It’s Hit, Drive and Lift. Too many blockers today stand up TOO SOON and fail to create movement. COACHES ... retweet this clip to their players.
HOLD ON ... don’t write in JOE BURROW as the 1st pick of the NFL DRAFT quite yet. There’s another choice ... JUSTIN HERBERT who is in the mix (along with CHASE YOUNG). As a 23 year Bengal ... I’m a pretty solid source.
QB DRAW/RPO ... Great job by
#LSU
QB Joe Burrow here. He drops, and starts to run the DRAW while reading the backside CURL area. When he sees the FREE SAFETY step up, he throws the slant to the X Receiver. If the FS stayed deep, Burrows would run
SKIP PULL FOOTWORK TECH is used to get square and accelerate up into the hole. Use a skip pull when going around 2men. If you need to pull around 3 or more, then OPEN STEP PULL. Andrew King Eureka HS
PENEI SEWELL.
Great foot quickness, balance and HEAVY hands. My chest is still throbbing the next day.
I was impressed with his football acumen too.
@peneisewell58
RICH BRAHAM
When I worked him out at WVa the first rep he went easy on me. Then I told him to block me hard. The next rep he drove me five yards, pancaked me into the ground
When I got up, I told him “you gotta play for me”. He did. 13 years as
#bengals
center. One tough man
DBL TEAM TRIGGER DRILL. This drill starts with FOOT FIRE in place. Stay together and don’t leave the dbl team until the LB TRIGGERS through or over top. Rather than “dbl to the LB” mentality, think “stay on dbl until LB comes to you”
OLINE GURU ... JIM MCNALLY. My mentor and friend. 10 strict pull-ups at 76 years old. He invented the kick step and numerous OL techs. The Paul Brown of Line Coaches.
QUINN MEINERZ (UW Whitewater)
It was a pleasure working with you today.
YES you can believe the hype. He’s a good athlete with strong hands and quick feet. He will be an NFL Center.
@QMeinerz
@JimNagy_SB
Willie Anderson was Pro Football Focus top pass blocker in the last 15 years. Here’s the stats researched by
@PFF_Neil
HOF ballots went out yesterday. Hope
@BigWillie7179
is inducted this year
@bengaljims_BTR
TREY LANCE (N Dakota State)
The young QB and the old Line Coach working through NFL protections. He’s a quick study and an impressive guy.
@treylance09
EVERYONE: BIG CONFUSION between GAP and ZONE. Folks(even coaches) don't get it right. If frontside blockers step inside foot and DBL TEAM to then - GAP. If they step outside foot it is ZONE. This play is a GAP PLAY. Coach-speak: DUO. TOO MANY call it an inside zone
What do these 10 HOF DLinemen have in common?
K Greene, M Strahan, R White, C Dollman, J Peppers, J Taylor, T Suggs, R Dent, J Allen, C Haley
NONE had a sack vs WILLIE ANDERSON
True story. Amazing isn't it?
Compare apples to apples -
@BigWillie7179
HOF
Coach Art Droski sent me this drill. Lots of guys getting reps. Art was an ALL MAC player for me at Central Michigan years ago His record as a junior high HFC is 64-7 over 12 years. Hasn’t lost a game in 5 years. YIKES!
ANDY DALTON
If I was playing for you this is how I would have reacted. I promise you that.
Too much respect to have someone cheap shot and injure my QB
How the Cowboys should have reacted to the hit on Andy Dalton. I can say I have never been more embarrassed, mad and disappointed at Cowboys team than this 2020 team. No heart or fight. You always protect and defend your Quarterback.
@corbydavidson
@GreatDonovan
@SportsSturm
JET SWEEP ... is that unblocked DE a problem when he runs up the field? If so,run the LONG TRAP like the
#49ers
do here. That will get those defensive coordinators “scratching their heads” and “shuffling their papers” (homage Don Breaux)
INSIDE ZONE COMBO
I like how the blocker on the right stays square and solid on the DT who pinches inside. Many guys just leave and go. Please, stay on as long as possible provided you’re square.
Good job by players

ANDREW WHITWORTH
Congratulations. Whit
#1
graded OT (pff) in week 1
At 38 to be 39 years old, that’s ASTOUNDING.
He’s been so good, so long ... and worthy HALL of FAME candidate.
The great WILLIE ANDERSON played 25 games against HOF rushers and gave up one sack. In fact he only allowed 15 sacks in 13 years. Unbelievable
But as I recall, I think I smoked him here. Not (haha)
HOWARD MUDD has died.
The talented offensive line coach who gave so much to our game. His brilliance changed football in innovative techniques and approaches.
All offensive line coaches die a bit today along with Howard. A greater man there wasn’t.
Podcast forthcoming
BEN BREDESON traded to
#NYGiants
Great move for
#NYG
I’ve watched him this preseason and he’s good. He has a good Pro Football Focus grade too.
He could be the
#gmen
best interior OLineman this year.
Blockers watch this! Well done
Notice how he keeps his feet back (I call it foot leverage) and his back arched.
He doesn’t shoot his hips and bring his feet under immediately. This is right. If you bring your hips immediately on contact you lose leverage, drive and sustain
WIDE ZONE vs OUTSIDE ZONE. Maybe it's semantics. The WIDE ZONE COACHING TREE would disagree. WZ theory is back's path at the TE and blockers "PUSH" (REACH tech) the defense. RB only gets outside if the defense doesn't flow. Looking for 1 CUT by the back to get north inside.
Congratulations
#Georgia
Left Tackle Jamaree Salyer
@jamareesalyer69
shut down Michigan premier edge rushers Aiden Hutchinson and David Ojabo in the
#OrangeBowl
In my mind … he was the game’s MVP.
OLiners … Watch their hands.
They dont “shoot their guns from their holsters”. There’s no wind up. They go directly to the blocker.
If you’re still shooting your guns on run blocks, your hands are late … and you’ll lose the block
The
#NFL
is significantly higher on JJ McCarthy than I ever could have imagined.
I had a direct source today share that a team in the NFC has him as their QB 2.
I use pole (pipe etc) across the shoulders for the proper feeling of lateral balance. The pole should stay parallel to the ground If it swings up and down, then there’s too much weight on that foot Brandon Walton (Florida Atlantic) maintaining literal balancrc
REACH BLOCK
The most important element is the timing and placement of the backside hand with the backside foot
Perfect execution here by

@ladarius77
He’s a quick explosive man and a name to remember.
@JimNagy_SB
JACKSON CARMAN
Congratulations
#Bengals
@Jackthejiant
is a powerful athlete with great balance. Dominant run blocker at the point of attack and has great poise as a protector. Can play either tackles or guards. Another steal here.
Hats off

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHIT!
40 years old today. I’m told he’s the oldest starting OT in NFL history.
A rare mixture of athleticism, dedication and competitiveness. In my NFL coaching years, no one spent more time studying his opponents than WHIT did.
Willie Anderson,
@ProFootballHOF
Candidate faced most of the All Time Rushers in NFL History during his career
In 15 games vs these guys he allowed only 1 sack A remarkable feat.
@BigWillie7179
@bengaljims_BTR
NOT FLOATING. Set to your spot (2 kick slides) and STOP (I call it LAG) That’s where you make your reads. This “delay” drills teaches SPOT READ timing and not FLOATING. Good body control by Will Fries (Penn State)
Rookie GARRETT BRADBURY. This guy is special. The Center for Minn fits perfectly in Kubiak Wide Zone scheme. Watch him REACH the DT who is all the way over on the Guard. Not many centers can do this with quickness, leverage and power like Bradbury does here.
DILLON RADUNZ
The talk of the
@seniorbowl
won every 1 on 1 pass pro on tuesday, wednesday and thursday practices.
Proud of him. We worked together many hours leading up to this week.
WILLIE ANDERSON named HOF Semi Finalist. Vote for Willie
He was a dominant OT with staggering sack/run block statistics. As good as the top guys in the Hall, better than some of the others.
Watch vs Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Jevon Kearse, Michael Strahan etc
OVER-SETTING ... why do they do it? Because they don’t LAG. When a rusher is WIDE, take 2 kick slides and Stop (lag) until he gets to you. NEVER take more than 2 kick slides while the rusher is still in front of you.
False Start on Center???
Terrible.
When an official blows a call that badly … he should have to sit out next week.
The center was using legal silent snap mechanics.
Whether its kick-slide or positing, the weight is mostly equal between both feet. (Not heavy inside because you can’t cover ground) the blocker should feel like a rope is pulling his hips on an angle. Colton MCKivitz (WVA) doing great job today.
FLEA FLICKER. This is a spectacular play design that the
#Bengals
game planned SPECIFICALLY for
#Seahawks
defensive coverage concepts. It’s an all time great design that exposes the seahawk roll coverages Watch both clips and follow this tweet thread and I’ll teach you.
LOGAN ALEXANDER BAIRD SEITHER ... my wife Red and I are grand parents. Can’t visit until after the virus ... but what a blessing during this time. MOM (my daughter) is doing great ... just a few days early on the birth ... not enough for the REF to call FALSE START
Yes I'm coaching again. This time as a Head Coach of the Dresden Monarchs in the GFL. It's a "summer" league and we look forward to a fantastic experience.
It won't interfere with the consulting/training that I do with NFL players and coaches. Very excited!
SENIOR BOWL ... Coach Matt Patricia told me they like to put the LEV SLED pads upside down for better hand fits for defense line use. (BTW ... I invented the LEV SLED 30 years ago with Rogers ... true story)
Congrats WHIT
As I heard last night by
@CollinsworthPFF
, Andrew Whitworth is

graded LT this year. An amazing accomplishment for 38 years old.
HOF career. Deserving of Gold Jacket
TRUTH. When the QB stinks, and the COACH blames everyone else on offense to “protect” his confidence .... the COACH loses the TEAM. I’ve seen it so many times. Just tell it like it is .... or say nothing.
Keeping your inside elbow set at 90 degrees while working the outside stab (independent hands) is critical to control the bull rush or inside counter.
Too many blockers lose control because their inside hand strikes high on the shoulders rather than low under the chest.
Center Reach
I like to use a slalom pole but my suitcase worked fine.
Align it with the shoulder so the center works snap, step, hips and head all together in one movement.
Great job by
@CameronJurgens
, Nebraska Center training for this spring’s
#nfldraft
FEET BEFORE HANDS. This is a good way to train it The pole insures proper lateral balance and prevents the blocker from reaching his hands too soon. This is setting feet versus a BULL RUSH. Follow the thread for details ...
You ask what did the RB do wrong? He signed up for the wrong drill.
That’s a pointless, dangerous drill IMO. I’m all for Oklahoma drill with tight cones but vs 1 on 1. Not vs and unblocked LB who can just tee off on you.
Good football doesn’t allow for unaccounted…
HIGH HAND - LOW HAND. The only time the hands are together and inside on the chest is when the defender is head up on the blocker. Whenever blocks are made on shaded defenders (run or pass) the outside hand fit is high and the inside hand low. Watch the placement on the bag
BOYS ... that’s right. Lots of young football players follow me. We need you to think and act like MEN now. Follow the precautionary guidelines. Practice social distancing. And LEAD you friends to do the same. LEADERS act like MEN.
KICK- POST ... or 2 KICKS - 2 POSTS DRILL. This teaches balance at the set SPOT. The feet must be positioned properly and the body posture perfect to do it. Players reacts to coaches voice or wave. Good job CHRISTIAN EUBANKS St Francis.
@eubie_
Wide, continuous feet on contact.
Keep your base and time your punch with your hands and feet.
Just like this kid is doing on a great SKIP PULL at the MIDWEST LINEMAN’S CAMP
I love it. I’m going to do it.
Mainly to prevent blockers from cocking their elbows. The old theory of “shooting your hands from your holsters” is too slow. Your hands need to get on the defender with or slightly before (not after) the 2nd step
An eager young FBS coach asked how I learned so much Football. Here’s my advice: spend every free day/moment studying, visiting and learning from great coaches.AND trust your eyes. Much of what I teach came from objectively watching how great players play ... not from a textbook
the MULTI SNAP
I love it. If you have a center who can snap with both hands ... he will never be at a disadvantage of which side the NG lines up on.
@polestage66
getting ready for this weekend’s
@TropicalBowlUSA
and
@CGSAllStar
To my NFL scouting friends ... he has it.
BEAT OFF THE COUNT? Not a problem for LT79 Jackson Carmen (Springfield OH). He “adjusts” his body from a kick set to an open and push set “leading”the rusher to a spot where he will be. The angle is still 45 but he turns to it.This is tremendous technical poise under pressure.
ANDREW THOMAS working on HI-hand LOW-hand position. Watch SOLOMON KINDLEY snap back. ANDREW has solid hands with a strong punch ... to go along with his 36+ inch arms. (I measured them)
GREG LITTLE is a pass blocking machine. He knows how to use his hands independently as well as any college guy I’ve seen. His problem is run blocking (especially down blocking). His stance is too wide, doesn’t gain ground=penetration. Narrow the stance. A five minute fix.
LA’ EL COLLINS is
@PFF
#1
rated OT after 5 games. He knows how to use his hands Watch the RT here. He’s patient with his hands until the rusher goes to knock down his outside hand. “When a rusher goes for your outside hand, punch him immediately with your inside hand”. WELL DONE!
Hate to say I told you so ....
Thomas 1st of OT to go - yes he's the size, athleticism, the power and reach. But he was also the most productive (grade wise) OT esp vs SEC
I had him going first of OTs. Don't listen to the draft nicks ... it's the right pick. Experts: Shhhhhh
ESCORT MOTION: this unique motion concept that
#Ravens
employ has confounded NFL defenses for the past two years. But
#Bills
had a unique answer Follow the thread and I’ll teach you the unique motion, answer and the future move in this great chess match
MATT HENNESSY (Temple) is the top Center at
@seniorbowl
You can see that he has excellent foot quickness and coordination between his feet and hands.
ZONE COMBO well done. Risner understands leverage, angle, timing and positioning. That’s why he has

LINEMEN LEAGUE. This is the BEST lineman camp game. Real football with bag touch=tackle. Coach is OL Coach, OC, HFC, GM and Owner. A coach’s dream. Ton of fun. Email me for the rules. Linemen dont want to play AIR LEAGUE or run stupid RELAY RACES. Never have, never will!
Super Bowl OLine Grade Comparision

#Bengals
OL had "winning performances"
And "Big Whit" had the highest pff grade among the group. He played his best when his best was required. Congratulations!
SLING SHOT TECH ... good blockers know how to use a defenders momentum to their advantage. The best I’ve ever seen at this tech was TYRON SMITH. He told me the key was to show the DE his hands and when he attacked his hands to then SLING SHOT him upfield
This might look like he’s bent too far forward and he should be punching. NFL players have some body LEAN and they LIFT just like this. The “S” shaped body posture is the most powerful, more than the butt down flat back. It’s power clean mechanics. I teach techs used in GAMES
Prior to the SUPER BOWL, the PATS had a strong tendency for the FB "leading" the RB to the hole. In fact the previos 60 times they were in this personnel, the FB led the play 100%. This is SPLIT FLOW ZONE where the FB goes away from the hole. Great job self scouting by PATS.
Push Pull Drill
Balance is controlled through steady head position.
The goal for the blocker is simple. Keep your head as still as possible without your upper body lurching forward or backwards.
