Lose a game...the refs cheated us
Fail a class...the teacher didn’t like me
Not getting recruited...they sleeping on me
When do WE accept the responsibility and take ownership?
If you have a D1 offer, you’re a good player.
If you have a D2 offer, you’re a good player.
If you have a D3 offer, you’re a good player.
If you have an NAIA offer, you’re a good player.
If you have a JUCO offer, you’re a good player.
Every opportunity is a blessing.
According to the NCAA, there are approximately 546,400 HS Boys basketball players. It is estimated that approx. 18,700 of them will play college basketball at the NCAA D1, D2, and D3 levels. That’s 3.4%...
Keep telling yourself you’re too good for certain levels...
Going NCAA D2 is NOT settling.

Going NCCAA is NOT settling.

Please do not take it for granted.
3 Things I’ve never been asked by a college coach:
1. How many pts does she/he average?
2. What is she/he ranked?
3. Did she/he make all-region?
3 Things I have been asked by a college coach:
1. How are his/her grades?
2. Are they coachable?
3. Does she/he work on their game?
HS Players...
If a college coach comes to watch you play in person, they’re typically sold on your skill set, ability, and potential. The question is...do you have the intangibles & character they are looking for?
I help kids who ignored me when I asked them to play on my AAU team.
I help kids who flat out told me NO when I asked them to play on my AAU team.
It’s about helping kids...PERIOD
Some people talk about it...others DO it.
Players...Please don’t wait until you’re in the locker room after your last game to be emotionally invested in your team. You show your commitment through your daily habits...showing up early, being the last one to leave, giving 100% everyday.
College basketball is a business. If your goal is to play college basketball, you need to act accordingly. Right or wrong, EVERY decision you make on AND off the court matters.
If a kid transfers to a High school bc they have a better music department or better academics, no one cares...but if he goes for “athletic” reasons, everyone loses their mind.
#Hypocrisy
If I’m a college coach, my ability to support and provide for my family is largely dependent on the behaviors / actions of 18-22 year olds. You better believe I’m going to ask a lot of questions / do research before I bring a kid into our program.
If you’re a Class of 2024 hooper playing travel basketball and your goal is to play college basketball…
Why would you play for a team/program that doesn’t play during NCAA Live Periods?
I don’t feel comfortable sending any of my kids to attend a school and/or play for a coach who is unwilling to fight for social justice issues. Life is much bigger than Basketball.
This mindset that Non-NCAA D1 levels are secondhand options is perhaps the most destructive line of thinking in youth sports. Ignore those opportunities at your own peril.
All levels can play...
Any HS/travel basketball coach who is contacting college coaches on your behalf is putting their reputation and credibility on the line for you.
Please keep that in mind when you’re interacting with college coaches.
Starting is overrated in Basketball. Would you rather start or FINISH games? Would you rather start and play 17 minutes or come off the bench and play 23 minutes?
A fully funded NCAA D2 Basketball program can offer a max of 10 Full Athletic Scholarships. If there are 15 players on the team, everyone can’t be on a full athletic ride. Want to be a more attractive prospect...good grades & test scores can do that.

HS players…
If a coach is willing to vouch for you, they are putting their reputation on the line FOR YOU. It is incredibly hard to gain credibility with college coaches. A single bad experience can erase years of hard work.
We need more HS Hoopers getting involved in extracurricular activities unrelated to basketball. Join SGA, Spanish Club, FBLA, do an internship, etc.
More importantly, we need more adults encouraging them to explore their interests outside of basketball.

HS Boys Basketball Players…
If you’re a 6’0 or under guard and you can’t 1) Be a primary ball handler or 2) shoot efficiently…you are going to have VERY limited opportunities, if any at all.
The Peach Belt, CIAA, SAC, Gulf South, SIAC, Conference Carolinas, and Sunshine State are all NCAA D2 leagues in the Southeast that are filled with NCAA D1-level talent.

HS Players…
Please don’t overlook JUCO. It’s a great opportunity to:
✅ Develop
✅ Play high level competition
✅ Earn college credits
✅ Experience being a college athlete
Every opportunity is a blessing…
What do the NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, NJCAA, USCAA, CCCAA, NWAC, and ACCA have in common?
They offer potentially life changing opportunities for young people.
If you want to play college basketball, you need to be prepared to fill a “role”. That role will be determined by the coaching staff’s assessment of your skills + the team needs.
In the best programs, everyone not only embraces their role, they excel in it.
It’s April 2nd...
Question: Why would a senior with ZERO offers from any level ignore texts and calls from non-NCAA D1 schools?
Answer: The senior doesn’t really want to play college basketball.
One of my college teammates graduated with a 3.8 GPA in Neuroscience, earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, then played pro basketball in Europe for a few years and is now in medical school. You can do both...
#AcademicsMatter
Friendly reminder…
When you take contested shots over multiple defenders, college coaches will see that as:
1) You’re selfish and/or
2) You have low basketball IQ
Neither is a good thing…
Being a very good HS player does NOT mean you can play NCAA D1. There are players at every level of college basketball who were really really really really good players in HS.
If you’ve been offered a basketball scholarship at the non-NCAA D1 level, you’re VERY blessed. Every opportunity to play college basketball is a blessing. All levels can play...
D3 Hoops Story ⬇️
I know a player who didn’t start a single game until his junior year in college. His senior year, he was POY in the conference and 1st team All-American. He then played professionally in Europe for several years.
Everyone’s journey is different…
There are more NCAA D1 level players than D1 roster spots. So where do those guys end up?
Some are at home b/c they had the wrong mentality.
Many can be found at the NCAA D2, NCAA D3, NAIA, USCAA, and JUCO levels.
All levels can play…
2020 is NOT the year to stack offers for social media. If you have a quality opportunity that is a good fit for you academically, financially, socially, and athletically...you might want to take it before someone else does.
I’ll continue to say this…bc it’s true.
There are non-scholarship programs who can offer you a BETTER basketball experience AND a more affordable education than some scholarship programs can.
4 Factors To Consider When Selecting an AAU Team...
1. Opportunity to Play
2. Skill Development / Teaching
3. College Coach Connections / willingness to help
4. Tournament Schedule
5 non-scoring ways that wings can impact winning & get noticed:
📌 Defend multiple positions
📌 Rebound
📌 Be a secondary ball handler
📌 Set screens
📌 Communicate
If someone offers you $100, does it matter if they give you 1 $100 bill, 2 $50 bills, 5 $20 bills, or 10 $10 bills?
If not, then why does it matter when schools offer you academic & need-based scholarships and/or grants instead of an athletic scholarship?
College programs are not actively recruiting HS freshmen.
Class of 2025…please FOCUS on developing your skills, exploring your interests outside of basketball, and most importantly, your GRADES.
If you do that, everything will work out.
Many HS players don’t want to hear this, but in this new recruiting landscape…you have to be patient.
IF you put the work in and handle your business on AND off the court, it will pay off.
We really need to reset recruiting expectations.
It’s extremely challenging to earn a full athletic scholarship. Want to get your education paid for? It’s best to perform in the classroom.
I don’t think it’s ever been harder for HS basketball players to find next level opportunities. Please make sure you align yourself with people who are knowledgeable, trustworthy...and most importantly care about YOU and your family.
If a child from a low-income, disadvantaged background feels that Athletics is their ONLY pathway to a better life, then we (adults) have failed that child.
Class of 2023, 2024, and 2025 Hoopers…
You have time. Focus on being the best you can be in the classroom, in your community and on the basketball court.
If you do that, everything will work out.
Class of 2023…choosing an AAU team/program is a very important part of your recruitment process. Here are 4 factors to consider:
📌 Opportunity to play
📌 Development
📌 Tournament Schedule
📌 College Coach connections
Imagine spending hours and hours of your personal time trying to help people you don’t know and have zero connection to FOR FREE only to have those same ppl complain that you aren’t doing enough.
The world we live in…
HS Class of 2022 Basketball Players...
I promise you that if you work as hard as you possibly can in the classroom AND on the basketball court from the beginning of your 9th grade year until the end of your senior year, you will not regret it.
If a school has seen you play with your HS team, with your AAU team, at their Elite Camp AND they still haven’t offered you...it likely means they aren’t sold on you. You’re better off finding a program that will make you a priority.
This is what’s wrong with the 2018 Basketball Culture...
Quote from an unsigned 2019 player with ZERO offers
“If I don’t play D1, then college basketball wasn’t in the cards for me”.
If you’re making your college choice based solely on basketball reasons, you’re making a mistake. The ball will stop bouncing one day - will you be prepared?
