Hello. Today I was informed that The Athletic no longer intends to cover University of Washington football, and thus I am no longer employed there.
On a related note, I am now looking for work.
Asked where this win ranks among the best in his career, Michael Penix Jr. replied: "This is No. 1, man. I'm a Dawg, man, and I love this, and I love this feeling."
I'm pleased to welcome you to On Montlake, the new home for my coverage of Washington Huskies football.
Your subscription helps me continue telling the kind of stories I know UW fans want to read.
My first column:
Carson Bruener: “Everyone talks about it, like, ‘what if I did this, what if I went and got more money?’ I don’t give a shit about the money, to be honest. This is my home. This is my team. This is my program."
From Saturday at UW spring practice:
Thanks to all who have reached out, and posted their own tributes, about my uncle, Jim Caple. He died last night, at 61, after battling ALS and dementia. I admired him deeply, and his mentorship meant more to me than I can say. Please keep my aunt Vicki in your thoughts.
A UW spokesperson confirms that edge rusher Zach Durfee will be eligible to play after Dec. 15, the end of the current academic quarter. So he will be eligible for the College Football Playoff.
How big of a deal is it that UW is playing for a national title?
In Longview, my hometown, there isn't any sporting event bigger than the annual Mark Morris vs. R.A. Long basketball series.
This year's game at RAL was scheduled for Monday. They rescheduled it for tomorrow.
After interviewing at Alabama yesterday for their OC job and receiving an offer, Ryan Grubb has decided to stay at Washington, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. No new money involved, I'm told.
The Mariners made a lot of young people into fans in the mid-90s and early 2000s. Neither the franchise or MLB has done much to retain them since. This year finally held some promise. Bummer.
After accepting his Under Armour All-America invite, Sav'ell Smalls took the mic, stated Kennedy's goal of winning a state title, then put his arm around 2021 QB commit Sam Huard and said they want to bring a national title to UW.
We are happy to announce UW Huskies football insider
@ChristianCaple
will be joining
@SeattleSports
as a contributor. Caple will cover UW all year long and now, you can find out more about the newest member of our team by clicking the link below.
Here is a statement from UW AD Jen Cohen re: 9 a.m. kickoffs:
"It is our understanding that a 9 a.m. kickoff would need to be approved by both participating institutions, and 9 a.m. kickoffs are not something we believe to be in the best interest of our program and our fans.”
There’s a small crowd gathered at UW’s tennis courts to watch Venus Williams practice. Not sure why she’s here, but pretty cool to see people flock over there.
Petersen said when he saw Mike Leach before the Apple Cup, Leach asked him, "Hey, how much longer you gonna do this?" Petersen thought, "Oh my God, this guy's a mind reader."
BREAKING: Washington landed the state's No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, Spanaway (Wash.) Bethel linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale just hours before they play for a national title and he breaks down why he picked the home-state Huskies
Redshirt freshman DT Kuao Peihopa, asked today about the decision to return to Washington despite the coaching change: "There was no decision. There was just, 'oh, damn, he got fired? Alright, who's next?' We're here. Me and Voi, we're here. We're Dawgs."
Lots of UW players switched jersey numbers, per tradition for their final full practice of the season. That’s Dillon Johnson doing some drills wearing No. 80.
UW AD Jen Cohen: "We are aware of an interaction between Head Coach Jimmy Lake and a student-athlete during the first half of Saturday’s game. We have high expectations of the conduct of our coaches and we are working to gather more information on this matter.”
Germie Bernard, the 2022 Washington signee who instead wound up at Michigan State, announces on Instagram that he is transferring to UW. Huskies continue to bolster their 2023 receiver corps.
This should have been a week of reevaluation and creativity for Washington's offensive coaching staff. If anything, UW looks even more predictable and less imaginative than last week.
Washington QB Will Rogers is withdrawing from the transfer portal and returning to the Huskies, a source tells
@247sports
.
Rogers, the former Mississippi State QB who recently re-entered the portal, is No. 2 in SEC history with 12,315 career passing yards.…
You all continue to amaze me. I'm floored by the response so far to On Montlake, my new Substack venture.
I've *been* out here. I'm still out here. Subscribe today for continued thoughtful, informed coverage of the Washington Huskies.
My first column:
Kalen DeBoer's new 2023 salary will be $4.2 million — a $1 million raise — increasing by $100,000 each year after. He's also due a $500k retention bonus if still head coach on March 15, 2024 and March 15, 2026; and a $1 mil bonus if still head coach on March 15, 2028.
Jojo McIntosh said he told the team before the game: "This is our house. We haven’t lost here. They’ve lost here. We beat them here. This is our house. We don’t lose at home."
At long last, Orem (Utah) four-star WR Puka Nacua announces he will play for ... Washington. Big late addition for the Huskies, who already signed a top-20 class.
Just spoke with 4-star Ferndale OL commit Geirean Hatchett. He said he's bummed Petersen is stepping down, but "still all Dawg, and excited for the future with the Lake era." Said Lake and Scott Huff are coming up for a visit tonight.
On with
@Softykjr
on
@933KJR
, Washington OC Ryan Grubb says he appreciated opportunity to speak with Alabama, but ultimately felt it would have been "wildly out of my character" to leave UW after being so involved in pitching offensive players on returning in 2023.

Can't tell you how excited and grateful I am to announce that I've joined
@TheAthletic
and
@TheAthleticCFB
as a full-time UW football beat writer. Here's why, and what you can expect:
Sure, you can see officiating errors in any college football game. But you gotta watch WSU to see all the ones you would literally never see otherwise.
Interesting bit of roster news for Washington: Ulumoo Ale is moving from offensive line to defensive line, a spokesperson confirmed. Ale is listed at 6-6, 355 pounds and was all-division on both sides of the ball at Fife High School. Intriguing option at nose tackle.
One thought from re-watching the UW-Arizona game: Mark Helfrich does a good job in the booth. Just gives you his analysis and tries to tell you what's going on. Doesn't make it about him. And obviously knows the Pac-12 and is familiar with a lot of the current players.
The UW Foster School of Business announces Chris Petersen as its Edward V. Fritzky Endowed Chair in Leadership for 2020-21. The position "is designed to bring distinguished leaders to campus to share their expertise with faculty and students."
OK, this is totally self-indulgent, but who knows how long it will last, so I gotta celebrate it while I can: On Montlake currently ranks No. 9 among paid sports publications on Substack.
Can't say I ever envisioned being on the same top-10 list as Kareem in literally anything.
Congrats to my dad, who, three days after his 63rd birthday, finally carded his first hole in one, from 191 yards with a 3 metal on No. 8 at Mint Valley in Longview.
It's good to be retired.
Nine UW players invited to the NFL combine: QB Jake Browning, LB Ben Burr-Kirven, DL Greg Gaines, RB Myles Gaskin, OL Kaleb McGary, DB Jordan Miller, DB Byron Murphy, DB Taylor Rapp and TE Drew Sample.
It's official: Washington will host Utah on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN), the Pac-12 announces. Huskies won't get an Apple Cup this week, but at least they'll get a game.
Ana Mari Cauce on P12 deal: "It was not the deal that we had been discussing just days before. ... When you have a deal that people are saying one of the best aspects of it is, 'you can get out in two years,' that tells you a lot."
Some — ahem — personal news, as told by my wife,
@KariPlog
. 2020 has been a brutal year in many ways, but we're hoping for something to celebrate in December.
