Mother Nature put on quite a show on the eve of Tom Skilling’s retirement. Tomorrow is Tom’s last day at WGN 🫡

Looking into the "whale's mouth" of the shelf cloud as the

plowed through Chicago. It rolled over so fast, I only got off a few frames before the wind and rain hit //

When air traffic control routes your helicopter *over*
@fly2ohare
's airfield, you take as many photos as possible for the few moments you're traversing it.
Caught the
@BlueAngels
high-speed, low-altitude sneak pass head-on this afternoon. Even got some flicks of vapor on the wings, and a hint of wake on the lake
Wild how clear the sky was yesterday. I shot this at 300mm above Webster & Damen. If you look close, the entire south shoreline of Lake Michigan. and all its industry, is visible in the background

This is what it looked like as tornado sirens blared throughout Chicago yesterday. I probably should have been inside, but the velocity couplet had dissipated on radar. Winds never picked up too much in my neighborhood

That was too close for comfort! If you zoom in, you can see 1000’s of raindrops ‘frozen’ by the flash. You’ll also notice a bit of camera shake from me reflexively yanking the shutter release cable 😱😅⚡️
Here's a composite of *9* separate lightning strikes that hit the skyline. All told I caught 18 lightning events between midnight and 1am, but I couldn't stack them all.

Flew another 🚁project near enough to O'Hare on a relatively clear day to capture both the airport and the skyline in a single frame using my telephoto lens. ✈️🔭
St. Regis’ color variation really popped off the light blue, cloud-brushed sky yesterday. And good to see yellow boats cruising the river again. Always love their color pop & contrast.
Layers of Lake Michigan. On my way home from a 🚁photo flight, we skirted the lakefront near Evanston and I captured these clear delineations in the water's color thanks to sand and sediment churned up through current & wave action //

This is a fascinating satellite view from a few days ago. Interesting how the water within Chicago's breakwater system has froze, but not the open water beyond it.
Icy waters of Lake Michigan surround snow-covered Chicago, following a cold snap that swept across much of northern USA this week. The “Windy City” had wind chills as low as -20° Fahrenheit, and high temps during the week never rose above 5° for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Biked over to Wacker Drive to try a less crowded spot for

. Interesting angle, but the wildfire smoke really choked out the intense, golden light that typically spills down the 'concrete canyons' of the city //

The skies over Chicago lit up with incessant intracloud lightning late last night and again early this morning. Zoomed in for some close detail shots, too. What a show!

We ended the
#PolarVortex
on a high note by flying over the ice formations on Lake Michigan. The various textures and patters made for some otherworldly, satellite-like images.
Tonight’s sunset from the Indiana Dunes was 🙌🏼. This AM’s rain cleared out enough humidity for a clear view of the skyline from 35 miles away. //

Happy Chicagohenge, everyone! Astronomical fall officially arrives about two hours after midnight tonight - 1:50 am on Saturday to be exact. Happy shooting if you're out chasing sunrise or sunset between Chicago's concrete (and steel and glass) canyons
Today is
#GreatLakesDay
. Here's one of my favorite shots of Lake Michigan. Wind-driven waves the day prior kicked up sand & sediment which then gathered and settled at different depths in the water column creating well-defined color gradations
#ILwx
Caught a turbulent sky above the skyline before the rain came down. Michigan & Indiana should be on the lookout for shelf cloud sliding over the lake

Conditions near the planetarium were unreal this AM. At times, the drifting steam fog was so dense the city disappeared and we felt transported to an arctic world.
If you crave more

photos, I've added them all here >
Say what you will about what Northerly Island could have been, should be, or was; its winding path, and ecosystem of native plants and birds is one of my favorite spots in the city.
There's finally some action at the long-dormant Spire site. 400 Lake Shore is officially on its way towards rising from the ground. This is the first of many updates I hope to make during the project's lifetime ✶
