Hi! I'm Molly and I'm interested in feline history and welfare. Owner of 2 amazing FIV+ cats! Header by W. Eugene Smith. Profile pic is a postcard from 1908.
Quick note: I don't have any plans to return to this account. Twitter has become deeply gross and I've found I can fundraise perfectly well without it so I don't want to support it with traffic or content. You can find me lots of other places! --->
One of my favorite sub-genres of art is Cats Stealing Food in Still Life Paintings. It’s so wonderfully disrespectful. So here is a thread celebrating the need for snacks triumphing over art. First, Still Life with Cat. Alexandre-Francois Desportes, 1705.
I love the reaction of cat lovers upon seeing a cat. Every single time the level of excitement is like they've read about cats for decades but never actually seen one in real life and they're SO EXCITED. Every. Single Time. Even if it's the hundredth cat they've seen that day.
Imagine if we didn't have cats and you could only see them in zoos. We'd go and be like "OMG there were these micropanthers in all different colors and they're beautiful and why can't I have one😭" But we DO get to have them and it's amazing! That's what I'm thankful for today.
Here is a thread of cats destroying our stuff throughout history, because they've always done it and they always will and for some reason we will keep loving them for it.
Two Young Women Wrapped in Yukata After a Bath. Kitagawa Utamaro, ca. 1796.
Here it is, a thread of women who are absolutely fed up with everyone and everything except their cats. First,
This young lady smoking a pipe her cat. Ca. 1905.
I was waiting at the vet last week and an older couple came in to pick up their cat. Typical retired Vermonters - worn jeans, plaid shirts, LL Bean fleece vests. I would've guessed they were there for a Max, Luna, Toby, Bella, Oliver, etc, but no. They were there for SHADOW LORD.
Good news! I found a bunch of paintings of people throughout history spoon feeding cats like babies. First, this peasant woman with a cat, ca. 1640 - 1642.
"Miss Iris Davis, a nineteen year old from Clapham, London... spends a great deal of time recovering cats with the aid of a 'lassoo' from the debris of bombed house. So far she has rescued six hundred of these feline strays." 1940.
This is Towser! She was the official mouser of the Glenturret distillery in Scotland for her whole life, 24 years (1963 - 1987). She is also the current Guinness world record holder for killing the most mice in her lifetime. 🐁
I can't help but cringe a little when someone says "I want a kitten!" Yeah, I know what they mean but still - kittens are only kittens for the blink of an eye. Only get a kitten if you want a CAT with all the joys and responsibilities that entails for 12-18+ years.

From an instagram slideshow with 660K likes. There is no actual evidence to support this idea that Wain's drawings became more wild and abstract as his "schizophrenia worsened". Please do not spread this myth any longer!
A lot of you guys seemed surprised to see what Persian cats looked like 100+ years ago, so I thought I'd show you what a champion Siamese cat looked like around the same time...
I find so many "plain" photos like this where there's nothing novel going on, but there's just such sheer joy in knowing that people have been taking photos of cats since photos were a thing. Even back when it was really quite cumbersome and expensive.
Today, August 17th, is National Black Cat Appreciation Day! Here is a thread of some of my favorite black cat images to celebrate. First, black cat auditions for the film Tales of Terror, 1961.
#NationalBlackCatAppreciationDay
I love how cat people are superfans of their own cats the way other people are superfans of celebrities. Like, we know every detail, every quirk, EVERY piece of trivia down to the last toe bean freckle.
Usually I avoid posting anything about cat shows or purebreds but this is too funny. "Petite Lilly Bear... was sabotaged in the Persian cat competition during a cat show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin." 1949.
I’ve been holding off on posting Christmas cats because I know not everyone likes or celebrates it, but I can’t resist any more so it’s time for a thread! First, Father Christmas. 1920.
I'm making up my own title for this one. "Woman just barely sat down to read when suddenly her Cat Desperately Needs Food even though she just fed him 15 minutes ago."
I laugh so hard every single time I run across this painting. I don't really know what to think except the painter must have haaaated that kid. Ca. 1860.
I've been going through a lot of maritime archives recently, so here's a thread of my favorite feline nautical phenomenon: cats with their own tiny hammocks. ⚓️Mascot cats aboard HMAS Nizam, ca. 1941.
"Cat lady" is such an established archetype used to insult women but one thing I've learned from researching for this account it's that there have been PLENTY of cat dudes throughout history. Here's Mr. Comstock in 1913.
When I first posted this sweet photo of a young knitter (ca. 1939) from the Shetland Museum and Archives of Scotland, a lot of people voiced skepticism about whether a girl her age could be knitting like that.
This is one of my favorite paintings - I've used it as the header on all the Cats of Yore accounts. 'The Cat's Lunch' by Marguerite Gérard. Late 18th or early 19th century.
I keep forgetting that it's summer now so the windows are open and the neighbors can all hear me making up very long songs about Francie getting her PhD in Small Studies at Baby Bimpus University.
It’s me. I’m people keeping their cats indoors all day so this is a great way to get blocked. Not everyone lives in a magical utopia free of traffic, predators, communicable feline viruses, and other deadly hazards so keep this nonsense to yourself.
Someone just told me I should hashtag the FIV cats I post so they can filter them out because they don’t want to see them. Umm no. I’m not posting graphic injuries or illnesses, they’re just nice cats who need homes and advocacy. If you don’t want to see them you can unfollow.🌟
🙄 This poor cat looks perfectly relaxed and friendly. How utterly idiotic to let cartoonish human aesthetic notions dictate who deserves compassion and who doesn’t. Grow up.
