Dems have consistently backed electing a president by popular vote. Among Reps, support for the popular vote was far lower in 2000 and 2016 after the Dem candidate won the popular vote and the Rep won the electoral college. In other years, most Reps favored the popular vote.

Past CBS News Polls have shown most Americans support amending the constitution to elect a president based on the popular vote, rather than keeping the electoral college.

@CBSNewsPoll @BlakeMundy I am a republican and do not support a popular vote. That puts way to much electoral power in the hands of several large cities. The electoral college works.

@CBSNewsPoll This second graph showing the party support is representative sample of just how unprincipled the modern GOP is. Support for popular vote dips in years that would've had their candidate lose and spikes everywhere else.

@CBSNewsPoll Sounds like radical democracy to me ... next you’ll be wanting to let non-propertied males vote!
