Germanicus had no problem stomping his way around Germania. Romans didn't think it was worth holding, it was too under developed, sparsely populated, no urban centers, would've absorbed tax revenue instead of contributing to it.

Under every stone we find ghosts of the Near East's Roman past. Here partially submerged in the Euphrates are the ruins of Zeugma. A city today in Turkey but once a part of Seleucid and later Roman Syria founded as Seleucia by Seleucus I Nicator, later renamed as Commagene.

Rome could've been Western Eurasia's China, a multi-millennia-old civilization state. It was weakened by civil wars and carved up by invasions of nomadic peoples; Germanic (406-476) Islamic Arabs (630-700), Turkic (1024-1453). Ever since we've been a patchwork of warring tribes.
