Sports Editor at The Messenger in Fort Dodge, which covers high school and college athletic events across central Iowa. Tweets/thoughts/viewpoints are my own.
Schools across the Messenger area responded to the tragic loss of Algona police officer Kevin Cram by creating a touchdown fundraiser that raised tens of thousands of dollars for his family. How a simple, kind gesture of "Iowa Nice" became so much more.
Current temp here in Iowa is -13. Wind chill -40. Yet our paper was on time. Garbage picked up. Mail delivered. Streets plowed. UPS and FedEx trucks all over. Make sure to thank essential workers for their hard work and commitment to our communities - even in desolate conditions!
Instead of wasting your time watching the garbage CMAs, may I make a few suggestions?

Have to tell this story (apologize for it being so long)...two years ago, my daughter met her favorite basketball player after a game in Iowa City: Michigan State's Malik Hall. (1/5)
Congratulations to Edey, who finished a 40-minute game on the road with 0 fouls and has now been called for 10 total fouls in the last nine games despite being 7-foot-4 and 300 pounds. He's a wizard.
You know who the Hawkeye women will miss next year? Monika Czinano. In the midst of Sunday's high-profile national championship game, the Iowa senior showed the kind of level-headed leadership - again - the program must find a way to replace.
Well, rough night for the visitors in green. This made my daughter's night, though.
@iammalikhall
is her favorite player, and we appreciate him taking the time, knowing how frustrated I'm sure he is. Class act. Go Green. 💚🤍
@Juliehall67
High school athletes: you have to be good to compete at the junior college level. Very good. It's not an extension of what you see now, despite what you hear. Shouldn't be "beneath" you to consider the JUCO route. Makes good fiscal sense, and prepares you for the next level.
I'm a registered independent who has zero interest in getting preachy on social media about politics. Regardless of how you feel about
@AndrewYang
the candidate, it impossible not respect the man and his energy/passion. Your policies didn't win us over - your humanity did. 🧢
Teachers: I know you are stressed and worried beyond belief about school. You are the light in the life of so many kids, who are also more anxious and confused than ever before. Simply put, they need you. Thank you for being pillars of strength during a time of great uncertainty.
First Xavier, then Cassius, now this. Has this team underachieved some? Sure. Do they have flaws? Yes. But I'm not sure I've *ever* seen an
@MSU_Basketball
team with more character and maturity. How do you not root for Malik Hall after watching this?
What I appreciate most about
@AndrewYang
: he simplifies difficult topics and complicated conversations, while communicating a clear and concise message on behalf of everyday people. He's like your favorite songwriter: his words always relate and resonate.
IF there is a high school baseball season this summer in Iowa and IF Principal Park isn't available for state baseball, may I suggest a one-year return to...
What are Iowa fans enjoying more right now: the win, or Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush with glazed, dumbfounded looks on their faces during the postgame analysis back in the studio? 😂
I've been a Spartan die-hard for 38 years. It's hard to put into words something like this. It's a memory that will forever be a part of our trip back to Michigan together.
Thank you, Malik. Again. These pictures will always remind me this is about way more than just basketball.
• Clean programs seeking their first titles
• Hard-working coaches you can't help but respect
• Players who have put the time in and patiently waited their turn
• Staples of championship basketball embraced
Yeah ... just brutal, Pete
This national title game is generationally unsexy. The brands are duds, there’s little star appeal and the pace will be brutal. Here’s the worst part — this is what the Final Four could well look like in the future.
For as much as I admittedly like and respect Corum despite feeling the way I do about Michigan, I feel the total opposite about this dude. He's a clown.
Watching a special on
@LarryFitzgerald
. Taking everything into consideration - the talent, the leadership, the longevity, the accomplishments, the man and community leader he is - an argument could be made that he is the greatest athlete in the history of professional sports.
Textbook definition of "Iowa Nice": when you're an
@AmericanIdol
winner who just watched your sister and hometown program lose in the state finals by a single run in the rain, but you still have the patience to stop and make a 9-year-old superfan's year. Thank you,
@MaddiePoppe
!
Woke up with this nightmare image stuck in my mind.
This is with 15 on the shot clock. From a reserve forward who averages 5 PPG and had 1 total FG the first two rounds.
He would later deliver the final dagger on a fade-away jump shot in OT as the shot clock ran out.
No one enjoyed the way
@HawkeyeFootball
dominated the Holiday Bowl more than Brady Ross. The Humboldt graduate admitted, "It makes my heart happy when our style, which I consider the only real way to play football, prevails.”

Awesome moment tonight at the Dodger pool: the Fort Dodge girls swim program hosted a "Senior Night" for Ames. The Little Cyclones' athletic season is being paused indefinitely on Sept. 8 due to COVID-19, so this may be Ames' only meet this year. (photo credit to
@vandbr01
).
Rest in peace to a man who exemplified Fort Dodge's heart and character. May God be with Steve Springer's family, friends, and our community. Thank you for showing us what it meant to love and serve others, Steve. 🙏
Pella (population 10,360), Knoxville (7,200) and Centerville (5,500) are all losing their local newspapers. The consequences of this are, at best, significant - and for all the wrong reasons. Please support local journalism.
Can't get over this picture. Aaron Graves is 6-foot-5 and about 260 pounds. A Div. I football signee for Iowa. Look at the size of West Lyon's Easton Fleshman, a Hawkeye wrestling recruit (by
@Britt_Kudla
).
Southeast Valley all-state football player Aaron Graves will be an Iowa Hawkeye soon, but he's an Iowa Central Triton first! Graves, a senior in high school at SV, has attained his Associate of Arts degree from ICCC.
@CoachK_Bell
Middle school, freshman and JV coaches: keep grinding. You are more important to the process than you may ever realize. Molding young athletes during their formative years on and off the field/court/mat. A successful varsity program has to start with you.
I want to say this now ahead of any decision about summer sports in Iowa: IF there is a season and a kid or family doesn't feel safe playing, they shouldn't be shamed or ridiculed. This is an unpredictable, unprecedented time. Most are excited to play, but not all.
STATE CHAMPIONS: for the first time in school history, the Fort Dodge softball team has captured a state title. Dodgers 2, Ankeny Centennial 0. Final.

I'm way more impressed by Carson King's maturity at 24 than bothered by his immaturity at 16.
Not many 24-year-old's would turn an opportunity to cash in on accidental fame into a completely selfless act, or stand up and deliver the message he did yesterday.
@CarsonKing2
I know high school refs are decreasing in both numbers and popularity these days, but the games I've covered this year, by and large, have been very well officiated. Balanced for the most part, and not nearly as whistle crazy as it used to be. Appreciate those who still sign up.
Abuse in any form - physical or verbal - should have lasting consequences in youth sports. A shortage of officials may be an ominous harbinger before a full-blown system collapse.
@IGHSAU
@IHSAA
This isn't going to be a popular take, because I know Iowa fans are incredibly frustrated right now. But remember...you are disappointed while watching a 10-2 team play for a Big Ten title. The overwhelming majority of programs/fans would trade places with you in a heartbeat.
Sincere condolences to the entire Beisch family. A heartbreaking loss for their family and our community. Heidi was a kind, caring person who always took the time to care for others. Rest in peace. 🙏
This isn't AI.
Whole thing is just unreal. HE WAS POSED AS A CMU CREDENTIALED PERSON.
I find it hard to believe the NCAA and/or the Big Ten is just going to be OK with this.
MSU is 10-1 in its last 11 games. During that stretch, Xavier Tillman has 147 points (13.4 average) and 88 rebounds (8.0). He's 53 of 89 from the field (60 percent). Not to mention his outstanding PER and elite BPM. D and ball-screen work = outstanding.
@Rookiedunker
is a winner.
Incredible story here from
@ChrisJohnson_17
: in an exclusive interview, Southeast Valley star Aaron Graves - a University of Iowa football recruit - confirms he'll be wrestling at state Thursday morning, then playing district basketball that night:
@IHSAA
The best 7-yr. stretch in Iowa football history, % wise, is '15-21. Hawks were 63-25 (.716)...better than Fry ('81-88, 62-27, .697) and KF himself ('02-08 and '03-09, 59-29, .670). More impressively, he did it from age 60-66.
Cries for wholesale changes aren't rooted in reality.
The Humboldt Athletic Booster Club posted these photos on Facebook tonight ... Ashlyn Clark was in uniform and on the field for the No. 2 Wildcats in their 5-0 win over Ogden. Inspirational stuff to say the least.
You know who deserves a ton of credit? Kids. They mask up and go to school. Follow the rules and don't complain (for the most part). Think about how bizarre it would've been for us back in the day at that age to have our lives turned upside down by a global pandemic.
The Humboldt community is rallying to support Ashlyn Clark in her fight against cancer, with a June fundraiser bringing big-name
@HawkeyeFootball
and
@CycloneFB
to town for a slow-pitch game. "Everything we do this season will be for Ashlyn."

When a quartet of ex-Fort Dodge wrestlers take the mat for
@UNI_wrestling
, it will mark the first time in over 70 years a single Div. I Iowa program has featured 4 athletes from the same high school in its lineup. This dream has been years in the making:
OK, thread/rant time.
I've heard from parents and fans of many schools involved in the potential move away from the CIML. The concern seems to be leaving a challenging environment for something "less competitive." (1/a lot)
We often celebrate the success of collegiate athletes when everything comes together. But what about when reality gets in the way, adversity strikes or the narrative changes? This road can be a lonely one. As fans, we need to respect and remember that.
Most H.S. seniors - students and athletes alike - should consider going the JUCO route.
1) affordability
2) extra time to decide on your major/career path
3) option of being done after 2 years with vo-tech or AA degree and very little debt
4) slew of transfer possibilities
It's important to appreciate kindness when it enters your life. State softball week gave us multiple reminders of its prevalence. My column.

Please keep Humboldt senior Ashlyn Clark in your thoughts tonight. Her mother, Kristi, posted on Facebook that Ashlyn - an

recruit - has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Prayers to the Clark family and the Wildcat/Triton communities. 🙏

Chris isn't trying to be funny or popular or something he isn't. He is real and relatable on a much more vulnerable level. That's why people love him. And the guy is incredibly talented on a straight-forward sports analysis level.
@barstoolsports
is lucky to have him.
$400,000 raise for for Fran just to make the tournament. What happens if the Hawkeyes reach the Final Four? Lifetime contract? Carver-McCaffery Arena? Barta's next grandson named Fran?
All of Iowa's home wrestling meets have been sold out so far this season. Major media outlets need to reconsider how they treat wrestling coverage compared to other sports - especially in this state. It's long overdue. Fans are delivering a message. They want more.
Drake Ayala of Fort Dodge gets the final say and caps his spectacular career with a dominant 11-3 win over Ryder Block of W-SR for the 132-pound state title. Remarkable effort by one of the nation's best. Salute to an all-time great. Standing ovation from the crowd.
@drakeayala38
I'm sure Malik wasn't exactly in the mood for all of this after the frustrations of this past week. But he made this girl's year, just like he did in 2022. I remember saying at the time he made a family of fans for life that day. To randomly run into him today gave me chills.
To put Drake Ayala's win on Sunday in perspective...Devin Schroder is a fifth-year senior who is 24 years old. He's a three-time NCAA qualifier, a two-time Big Ten finalist, and has over 100 career victories at the collegiate level.

Cayd Lara is fighting for time on the mat at UNI. After having to fight for his life a little over two years ago, though, nothing fazes the former Fort Dodge star. The battles - and his determination to overcome it all - make

Had to stop at
@IowaCentral
this morning. Every student I saw wore a mask. Temp checks at a mandatory visitor stop.
I know colleges/students have been the butt of jokes lately for their supposed callous and careless behavior. Let's also give credit where credit is due.
Sad news to report: "Dodger" Denny Olson passed away this morning. No one loved the Dodgers more than Denny; our staff talked to him in the office almost every day. He'd call looking for Dodger scores or just to talk sports. RIP.
