6 months ago I began the campaign to stop Common Market from being turned into a car park.
Today the application has been withdraw, we've won. Yet the fight to build a Greener Cleaner Fairer City Centre goes on.
It's about building communities not car parks.
Developers want to turn Common Market into yet another car park. Is our city centre destined to be crumbling buildings & endless car parks or do we fight this?
The battle is on for the soul of our city.

Whilst others pat themselves or their respective parties on the back today on this anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, don't ever forget the contribution of Mo Mowlam in securing peace.
Rest in power.
On the 15th anniversary of the death of Mo Mowlam, this is your regular reminder that it just wasn't men who drove the peace process forward.
She was a colossus. Rest in power.
Working class kids in Loyalist areas rioting, while the old men who stirred the pot, sit in their comfortable houses & as history has shown, will wash their hands off them.
Pawns who will end up with criminal records, expendable futures, opportunities more limited. Grim.
We're not going to do it in East Belfast, but ended up with our biggest ever first preference votes, 2302 in total. Hopefully do well on transfers, before bowing out.
To everyone that lent me their vote, thank you so much. It's been a privilege to campaign throughout the East.
Annual reminder as some on here lose the plot at seeing spiders in their houses.
It's mating season, they only want spider loving under your wardrobe, they also eat up vast quantities of the nasty mites that can do damage.
Spiders, a great bunch of lads.
Sports Direct staff in Belfast being ordered into work this morning is irresponsible and dangerous. They are not essential workers, I've been told that staff are in bits at being put at risk.
Mike Ashley is a scumbag.
There's been a lot of issues on social media about election posters being stolen or vandalised.
Yet I want to state whoever did this to mine, I approve. We need more googly eyes, not only in politics, but everywhere.
We are in the process of taking down all our posters across East Belfast. I plan for them to be handed over to an arts project and to be also turned into hedgehog tunnels/bee hives.
To everyone that came out and lent me their vote in Lisnasharragh, thank you, I am honoured and I will get to work for you. Belfast faces huge challenges ahead, but our vision can be as well.
I am now a member of Belfast City Council.
#GreenWave
Love one another.
Unelected Jamie from Donaghadee doesn't speak for East Belfast, let alone Donaghadee, which is 17 miles away.
Go on put yourself forward for the council elections next year.
Significant rumours that Victoria Park in East Belfast is to used to have a GAA pitch to be imposed upon the community.
This is an outrageous proposal & entirely unwelcome. The vast majority of the local community do not want the toxic GAA imposed within unionist areas.
I felt that it was important that I got onto Nolan this morning to share my experiences a youth worker of 20 years & does it end when some kid dies?
Don't think we can get to you today was the reply. Is it the same voices continually amplified, is this all we offer? Words matter
My father was a Glentoran fan from the Falls and went to games regularly up until 1972, when the Troubles got too hairy for him to travel over.
Today I took him back for the 1st time in 48 years. Thank you to
@Glentoran
for having us as your guests this afternoon.
That episode of Derry Girls last night, was the first time I've watched any of it. The lines about the Jewish RUC officer from Ballymena, Diego from Pennyburn and the Spanish Armada had me nearly crying with laughter.
Virgin Group boss Richard Branson writes open letter to employees warning Virgin Atlantic will collapse unless it receives government financial support during coronavirus outbreak
Where is the story of Yvonne Dunlop, the pain and trauma left with her family decades on?
Is this your new Ireland, where innocent civilians who lost their lives are airbrushed out? You knew the reaction and hurt this would provoke.
40 years ago today, at 11am, Óglach Thomas McElwee from Bellaghy died after 62 days on hunger strike in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh. He was a political prisoner; unbowed and unbroken. This is his story.
Darren Grimes is a pathetic little weirdo. Getting the boot into someone who made sure 2 million children got fed last year, has also given away £20m of his own money to charity and is still only 23 years old.
Marcus Rashford represents the very best of England.
A lot of talk about young people and children in recent days following disorder across Northern Ireland. As a qualified youth and community worker and as someone who has been working with young people in care system for 20 years, here is just a few things on my mind:
It's been a bittersweet day, but I'm delighted to be back representing Lisnasharragh & this city that I love so much.
I'll continue to shout loudly & fight for a green vision that will protect our children & grandchildren for the decades ahead.
Love one another.
Throwing out a novel idea here, can we stop pandering to paramilitaries, they are criminals, not stakeholders or community beacons of shining light.
Don't care who they are, what side they are on, 23 years on from the GFA, we need to move away from this shit.
We go out at stage 10 in East Belfast, overtook the TUV in the end with transfers and finish 6th with a total of 3578 votes.
Bloody well chuffed with that, all things considered with how the smaller parties have been squeezed in this election.
Developers want to turn Common Market into yet another car park. Is our city centre destined to be crumbling buildings & endless car parks or do we fight this?

Crazy how 1 in a 1000 women getting blood clots from the pill has been ignored for decades.
A few dozen potential blood clots from millions of Covid vaccinations and its all over the media, governments in a panic.
Makes you wonder who we really value.
The number of young adults dying from drug overdoses in Northern Ireland is now higher than Scotland.
I am done listening to some moralising, we need safe injection facilities to save lives & prevent more families deal with grief & trauma.
Absolutely livid at this, EB GAA have a right to live side by side with their neighbours.
This hasn't been helped by the pathetic & disgraceful statements of the failed TUV candidate for Titanic.
Where does it end, with someone seriously hurt or worse? Words have consequences.
BREAKING: Police are carrying out searches at playing fields used by East Belfast GAA at Church Road in Castlereagh Hills.
It comes after reports that a device has been left in the area.
The playing fields have been evacuated until the search concludes.
@BelTel
I'll hold my hand up here and fully acknowledge and apologise for crass tweets I've made in the past.
I was very much part of the male toxicity that exists, but hope I've learnt and grown in the following years.
Sorry for being a dick.
Harding Memorial in the Lisnasharragh DEA becomes the first integrated school in East Belfast. Parents overwhelming vote for the move. Wonderful news for the area.
I say this as Man Utd fan, it would be a huge injustice if Liverpool aren't awarded the title, if the season is declared ended early.
They've romped home to it. It rightfully belongs to them.

@chhcalling
Hi Cllr Smyth, hope you're well. I'm a journalist with Storyful news agency currently covering the strikes. Did you shoot this video? May we distribute it to our news partners with credit to you? If so, I can send you on the T&Cs or you'll find them on our website. Thank you very…
Do you think at any point Gregory was typing this out, he thought to himself, maybe I don't post this, as people may think I'll come across as absolutely awful and this won't end well?
Probably not.
2 years ago I brought a motion to
@belfastcc
for a secure bike parking facility in the City Centre. Today that has become reality.
The Bike Yard at Castlecourt can hold 24 bicycles is accessed via existing pedestrian access of the Castlecourt Carpark at Gresham St & Smithfield
The Good Friday Agreement is 21 years old today & while others may bask in the limelight, never forgot the huge contribution of Mo Mowlam. Fearless and someone who is desperately missed in the current political landscape where leaders don't want to lead.
Lots of discussion again around Belfast City Centre over past few days. Talk around Sunday opening of City Hall and earlier shop opening times, for me that's cosmetic. We have real long term structural issues with city centre.
Here's some of my thoughts on where we are at...
This is still the norm in Northern Ireland when Sinn Fein MLAs and others allowed this to go on. For any of them that see this tweet, this is the reality you let continue. Barbaric, cruel and shameful.
I was due to be the Green candidate for East Belfast, yet I totally support the decision to withdraw and back remain candidates. We need as many remain voices at Westminster, Brexit will destroy Northern Ireland.
Weight on 27/12/19: 20st 10lbs
Weight today: 18st 5lbs.
Steadily getting there and this is being put up here to keep me in check. To resist the real urge to only eat chips and have a couple of beers every night.
I am an elected Green councillor, but today I won't vote Green, due to the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in. We must maximise the Remain vote, Brexit will destroy our environmental protections.
I will vote for
@ClaireHanna
in South Belfast.
#GE2019
Belfast City Centre has been ignored & failed politically for decades as there were never any votes in it, yet it is home to lots of jobs. Developers have also sat back, as parts of it crumble around us.
Let's build a city centre we can be proud of.
#GreenerCleanerFairer
Just seen the statement by Linfield FC, excellent and the club are to be commended for swiftly taking action.
It's easy to condemn an entire section of society for the actions of a few, but the overwhelming majority of people in this little part of the world are decent.
First and foremost Tommy Breslin was a very decent man, and one that as manager of Cliftonville, gave us the greatest side we have ever seen and to our most successful ever period, with a swashbuckling style.
Deepest sympathy to his family. Tommy Breslin's Red and White Army.
Class act by Linfield Football Club in sending the Gibson Cup up to the funeral of Tommy Breslin today.
Despite our rivalries in this league, I've said for a long time, some of the best folk I've gotten to know are from it and from all backgrounds.
Delighted that
@belfastcc
has supported my motion to bring Lough Neagh into public ownership. It supplies over 50% of our drinking water in the city.
The survival & regeneration of Lough Neagh needs a 21st century model of ownership. If we continue to hurt it, we hurt ourselves
Are we surprised by sectarianism? We seperate children from birth in Housing and Education and we do little about changing that.
I was 19 before I mixed with Protestants, for many young people in working class communities, little has changed since the mid 90s.
We'll not be taking lectures from a head of an organisation who buried children's bodies in a septic tank in Tuam.
The days of the Catholic Church being the moral authority on this island are done. You lost many of us from your flock a long time ago and we aren't going back.
The South and East Belfast Greens. This city will still have a strong environmental voice representing it.
Early indications are the vote in East Belfast is up by another few hundred. We're building something, we're not going away.
I was in the Cregagh earlier, where I've regularly seen the side of loyalism that is often overlooked. A community that has worked wonders during this pandemic, looking out for its most vulnerable, caring for each other.
Inspirational humans, a credit to this city.
Been a tough few days as a Green, but back at it in Council this evening.
To quote a line from a well known tune from 1997, 'I get knocked down, but I get up again', you never going keep me down'.
You and your party championed Brexit, despite Northern Ireland being dependent on the European Social Fund. Working class communities will suffer the most, young people denied outlets, opportunity and hope.
Your lack of self awareness is off the scale.
Problems with the UK’s Shared Prosperity Fund must be sorted out to ensure groups like
@monkstownboxing
in my constituency have the assurance of vital funding moving forward.
My question to the Levelling Up Secretary
@michaelgove
👇🏻
When the deputy Lord Mayor reads your comments about single use plastic bottles at the Belfast Marathon and sends me a reusable bottle from the Orange Order. 😂😂😂
Cheers Tom.
The huge community effort across Northern Ireland is nothing short of incredible. From the Orange Order, GAA clubs, Art sector etc, it's been remarkable and inspiring to witness.
When the dust settles after this, I hope people have a better perspective of each other.
Pret opening stores in Northern Ireland fair enough, yet we have hundreds of local cafes that are a large part of our social and community fabric.
I'll take Blethers on the Cregagh Rd anytime over Pret.
The photo of a child wearing a balaclava last night at that protest, sadden me.
Failure of leadership, segregated at birth, live in different estates, go to different schools & an adult that thinks it's perfectly normal for a kid to wear that.
What chance do some kids have?
How about you get back to Stormont, support the 1.4m people in our population of 1.9m, facing fuel poverty in 2023.
51k a year of doing nothing right now, whilst people are desperate and on their knees.
I’m sure you all feel great🙄 Everyone can stand around and clap each other on the back in the, ‘politically correct brigade’. How about getting on with the real issues affecting people such as tackling drugs, theft and crime?
If you criticise any potential band parades over the next few weeks, but are defending today or staying silent, you are very much part of the problem with this place.
Many made personal sacrifices over the past 3 months, they have every right to be angry at what was seen today.
The GFA was 22 years ago, what can we do to move this place forward to a society where people are tolerant of each other and every young person has a chance to live a peaceful and prosperous life?
And I've seen so many decent Northern Ireland fans dismayed by that video and my heart goes out to them. NI has made huge strides to make match days more open.
I don't see why decent fans should bear the brunt for a bar full of sectarian imbeciles.
We never had a peace process, but a political one. Never had those uncomfortable conversations, yet allowed sectarianism to fester into the next generation.
Our greatest shame since 98, passing on our poison to our children. Maybe it suits some to have us divided.
After the Cop rally at City Hall finished, the usual hate preachers moved in and launched straight right into it:
Homosexuality is a lie
Climate change is a lie
Standing there watching it, I felt sorry for them, joyless and consumed with so much anger. Can't be good for you.
Belfast desperately needs a late night bus service, similar to other cities.
It would build confidence around people being able to get home at night and hopefully end some taxi drivers demanding extortionate fares, particularly on weekend nights.
A debate on housing and the poor conditions many live in, at Belfast City Council has turned into a debate on if it's Northern Ireland or the North of Ireland.
I'm genuinely scundered by this.
Can't even fix pot holes, but want to build a potentially 40bn quid tunnel to Scotland? My arse.
Give us a quarter of that and you can revolutionise the public transport system and ports in Northern Ireland and still have money to fix holes in roads.
Only a matter of time before someone loses their life, a child, a parent, a bus driver, a passer by, a police officer. Doesn't matter who, what happens then?
Some words of sympathy, everyone else moves on, a family grieves. Nothing changes, no leadership. This stinks.
I'm Northern Irish, Irish & British, I am in a mixed religious marriage, yet I'm not religious. I'm not a nationalist, despite growing up in a working class Nat area.
Our identities are more nuanced and we have much more in common than some want.
Never take your NHS for granted. Today we took Small Human Being for an MRI scan, the cost of one is £400 upwards. Yet some want to privatise it for the greed and profit of a few.
Cherish it, fight for it. You never know when you or yours may some day need it.
Hearing of great work in East Belfast over the past few days by parents, community/youth workers to nip any potential trouble on the head.
Its easy to demonise each other, but scratch below the surface to see what's really going on. I love this city, don't give up on it.
It's a measure of the man that Tommy Breslin was, with the outpouring of sadness from fans of others clubs. Just been contacted by the lads at the South Belfast Linfield SC, who are gutted for Reds.
Some individuals go beyond the rivalries in football, Tommy was one of them.
Another election looming, a £6.5m waste of time, whilst people freeze in their homes this winter.
Brought to you to by the DUP, who supported Brexit & rejected every other alternative presented & end up with the Protocol.
When all you know is no, what did you expect?
I hear yer Da on Twitter is no longer just a virologist, with a deep knowledge of pandemics, but now a qualified European lawyer, with experience of legally binding international trade agreements.
Homeschooling with our 6 year old Small Human Being. Today was a bit on what makes a good friend.
So I asked him, what makes a good friend?
Not kicking someone in the willy, Daddy.
Can't really disagree with that.
Turns on radio, screaming row on flags. Meanwhile people can't afford to heat their homes, being reduced to foodbanks, drug deaths in the city skyrocketing and the City Centre is crumbling.
Happy Monday.
Kids who never knew the troubles, groomed for hate and violence, by poisoned old men.
The cycle of hate continues and the most vulnerable communities always suffer.
The New IRA attempt to murder a man in front of his son. The UVF threatened to burn their own communities to the ground.
Self serving sectarian cancers. These scumbag criminals need driven into the ground by the police and given no time by politicians.
Just go with this crazy idea for a minute, how about we build an comprehensive All island rail network?
It'll create lots of jobs, will be sustainable, massively cut down on emissions and upgradable long term.
Hearing politicians up at Stormont talk about the harm a criminal record will do to young people in terms of employment, travel etc.
Do you think kids who feel they have nothing, care about a criminal record? Tackle the root causes, poverty, no prospects/opportunities.
