A ‘Pitch 1’ mentality is my play on Jeff Bezo’s ‘Day 1’ mentality he has for Amazon employees.
Day 1 mentality = Don’t think about what happened yesterday, or worry about what could happen tomorrow. The only day that matters is TODAY.

Game 7 of the 2016 World: Biggest at-bat of my life. Ripped a line drive to right center for an RBI double. Not posting this to flex, just putting it out there because I think a lot of people could get some value out of how I kept my mind right during that at-bat. 🧵 Cont…

I’m going Rays in 6 over the Astros. Their staff, bullpen, and lineup too deep for the Astros. Plus they got my man KK running everything down in CF. 👊🏻

The majority of the time players get in a rut hitting because their timing is off, they’re trying to do too much, thinking too much, or just swinging at bad pitches. None of which has to do with mechanics. Everything starts with our thoughts and overall mindset!
Once players develop a WIN or LEARN mindset and accept that struggle and adversity are NEEDED to become their best, they all the sudden start playing with more confidence, have way more fun, and feel way less pressure.
Being the all-time leader in HBP per plate appearance in Major League history wasn’t a fluke. I trained my mind over the years to not be afraid, to not move, and to do whatever it takes to get on base. That is the power of the mind at work 👊🏻🪅
So much mental game gold here from Scottie Scheffler after winning The Masters. My takeaways:
1. Preparation builds confidence. Want to go into anything feeling more confident? Know deep down that you prepared as best as you possibly could.

⚡️Yup, that’s me back in 2009 at the position I played most, 1st base coach. After close to 200 at-bats in Double-A I was hitting a whopping .190. On days I wouldn’t start (which were most) I would take my position as 1st base coach. Pretty much rock bottom.

Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) was on to something with his ‘Clear the Mechanism’ routine! Watch as he:
- Looks at a focal point to get back to the present-moment
- Uses his breath to lock in and slow everything down
- Takes control of his self-talk to direct his thoughts

DWYSYWD: Do What You Say You Will Do. Earn an intense trust in yourself by doing what you say is most important to you, whether you feel like it or not. That kind of authentic confidence is earned, not given, and it is a true GAMECHANGER.

It’s NORMAL to feel fear and anxiety. Every single human does from time to time, especially when we’re out of our comfort zone.
It’s NOT NORMAL to have the mindset and mental tools to shift those feelings from an obstacle holding you back to an asset that fuels you.
Hands down…
Hitting is all about consistently having quality at-bats. These 5 checkpoints (that are all 100% in our control) will help hitters do just that!

People always ask me why I got hit so much. My short answer: IT WAS A MINDSET.
The goal when hitting is to get on base and in my mind getting HBP was just another way to do that.
Truthfully, I never went up to the plate looking to get hit (unless I had two strikes on me…

You may tell yourself you want to play D1 college baseball or you want to be a big leaguer…BUT are your daily actions backing that up? I see too many who are half in and go through the motions, rather than being all in and growing through the motions. The choice is yours.
Hitters: Your at-bat starts WAY before you get in the box (really it starts the night before with you prioritizing sleep).
- Let’s start with while on deck. Here you should act like you’re in the box and really be intentional with your breath, focus, and timing.
- When walking…

The power of visualization is real. Our brain cannot tell the difference between what we vividly imagine and what we physically do.
The reality is that there are 3 types of reps we can get:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, BRING IT ON. Those are 3 of the most powerful words you can ever say to yourself when you’re feeling any type of fear or anxiety, ON or OFF the field.
No more letting errors and mistakes linger in your mind and hold you back the rest of the game.

When I travel around and speak I always share this story of Player 1 vs. Player 2. A story that many of us have seen play out in real life countless times.

Hands down the best way to do with nerves it to perceive them as a GOOD thing. A great way to do that is to say “I’m excited” rather than “Why am I nervous?”
Think of it as your body is giving you energy to help you perform, so use it as fuel! The last thing you want to do is…
Ballplayers out there: Do you have set pre-game, in-game and post-game routines? If not, know that you’re truly leaving things up to chance, rather than stacking the odds in your favor.

Being resilient is good, but being ANTIFRAGILE is great. The more you get kicked around, the more adversity you face, the STRONGER you get. You become the opposite of fragile (unbreakable) and everything becomes fuel for your growth.
I made sure to get to get as many ‘mental reps’ against Chapman as I could, being that I had never faced him before.
Reggie Bush caught Drew Brees doing this a couple years ago in the Saints practice facility the day before a big game.
Watch this Corbin Carroll interview after the game last night where he talks about how stays confident. He’s a great example to all ballplayers of what it means to stick to the process and have that be your basis for confidence, rather than the results you’re getting. Success…

Confidence = intense trust. An intense trust in yourself that you can handle anything that comes your way. No more relying on good results for confidence, CREATE it and EARN it!
Once athletes realize they can create (or destroy) confidence with their body language, it truly becomes a game changer. Simply holding your body in an expansive, powerful way has been scientifically proven to make you feel more confident.
