Finished moving everything into our new place. It’s cheaper and cuter and bigger and quieter and has a yard and the hot water lasts way longer and I’m very happy. Still a lot to do but I’ll be back to work on commissions and Blood Crisis soon
In KH2, there's a large cargo net in Port Royal that's technically coded as a party member, meaning that if you cause it to get the last hit in a required story fight, the camera dramatically zooms in on the wooden post.
Probably the single funniest thing about Tears of the Kingdom is all the second-year CS students started posting shut like “thats actually really easy to code. I could do that” about mechanics that are making senior-level game designers lose their marbles
reminder that hogwarts legacy, supposedly one of the most "important games of the decade" basically evaporated from the public consciousness after a month and has thusfar received not even a single award nomiation
I don’t know a lot about Digimon but it is very funny to me that all of them seem to start out as Pokemon and either evolve into Beautiful Woman or Dragon With Rocket Launchers with no in between
There's a lot of genuine curiosity/confusion in the replies to this tweet, and as someone who does this stuff for a living, I thought it would be cool to offer some insight into why models ripped from games often look like this...🧵
*making a minecraft modpack*
“Oh, I need more jungle crops. Maybe there’s a pineapple mod”
>go to curseforge
>find pineapple mod
>Adds 20 new pineapple enemies, pineapple armor and tools, a new pineapple dimension with 4 unique bosses and a new progression tree
“Ok nvm lol”
SOTC got one of the better remakes but I'll never stop being mad about them changing the environment and artystyle from a hazy dreamscape into an Unreal Engine tech demo
WHELP. IT HAPPENED
Sony contacted me 🫣
Long story short I need to scrub the branding off of what was previously known as Bloodborne Kart, which we will do. But that requires a short delay.
Don't worry, the game is still coming out! It'll just look slightly different 💙
small tip for artists: you can genuinely get away with making your sky any color you want as long as the rest of your visual style supports it, and basically nobody will notice. the sky in Invader Zim is red for the entire show and didn't notice until like this year
@Jeremy_Statz
the fact that you can slap a steering stick on to basically anything and it controls intuitively will never stop being magical to me. you can make the most dogshit, garbage contraption imaginable and the steering stick will somehow always manage to function how you'd expect
The constant push for realistic graphics has created this kind of paradox where Gamers simultaneously want games to look 1:1 like real life but they also have no idea what a normal human woman looks like
Being non binary is great because when i go to dunkin masc’d up the old Indian guy that works there always calls me “boss” But when I’m dolled tf up he calls me “Miss” And teases like he’s not gonna give me my drink and he thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world
"Worse graphics" does not mean "worse looking". The image on the left is from a near 20 year old game with objectively worse graphics: lower polycount, texture resolution, and no dynamic lights or shadows. And yet it looks 20x better than the image on the right, a game from 2019
This kinda thing only makes sense once you realize that your credit score is not about how good you are at paying off debt, it’s about how good you are at *having* it. You are supposed to be in debt forever. It was designed that way on purpose.
i just paid off a loan and my credit score fell 30 points. makes total sense. i completely understand why paying off a loan I took out in full would reduce my creditworthiness. I obviously cannot be trusted to miss payments
Does anyone else remember that E3 video where a guy is interviewing snoop dogg about Battlefield 1 and he’s like “yeah we got a secret weapon the enemy don’t know about…they’ll never see this shit coming” and it cuts to him smoking a blunt inside and his K/D is like 1-62
Last year I was doing research for a video on sci-fi environments, and I kept stumbling upon this one very specific trope characterized by enormous, impossibly large rooms connected with walkways and dangling cables, and I was legitimately shocked at how far back it goes
it's crazy that the technology behind this extremely advanced software that cost Disney tens of millions of dollars to develop specifically for this movie is now basic functionality in Blender, which is completely free for anyone to download. The future is cool sometimes
for like 15 years people treated the the idea that "turn based combat is boring and obsolete and objectively bad game design" as a totally normal and valid opinion
Retro gaming youtubers really gaslit an entire generation into echoing their dogshit takes
What are your least favorite examples of this? For me, it’s “Sonic 1 aged poorly and Sonic 2 is the best Sonic game of all time”
It was such a cool moment in history to see a bunch of streamers basically admit in real time that they weren’t sure if neonazis or gay people were a more profitable part of their fanbases
@TriforceZard
Find any popular tweet praising the recall ability and there will be at least one person in the comments saying "it really isnt that impressive, its just vector data, thats only a few bytes. all you'd have to do is [thing that is way easier said than done]"
Kingdom Hearts lore is so funny. Not only did Pete the Cat receive eternal banishment from Disney Town for cheating at Mario Kart, Scrooge McDuck also canonically invented the skateboard
Basically, when artists create a character and skeleton for game animation, they actually use *two* separate skeletons. One which moves the model, commonly referred to as a "deform rig", and one that the animators use to actually animate the character.
Found this insanely cool demo on itch io for a game called Gearbits. Extremely strong first impression, one of the first demos in a while that I've found myself replaying multiple times
@SalehTheBest
Its more like watching someone juggle flaming chainsaws while on a unicycle and thinking "i can do that" because you can throw one ball up in the air and catch it
So, long story short, you were never meant to see these bones. Nobody at ArcSys ever animated this rig directly. It's like pulling all the paneling off a car: it still technically runs, it just wasn't meant to be operated by a human in this state.
When animating for a studio, the deform rig is almost always hidden or invisible and tends to never be animated directly. The bones on the control rig control the deform rig, and the deform rig controls the mesh. This way, only the necessary bones get exported to the game engine.
every once in a while I think about how "Darth Maul's secret yellow brother named Savage Oppress" sounds like a complete shitpost but it is 10000% real and official
@SkarlonYGO
as someone who hadn't really watched any doctor who before, I was really surprised at how much more I liked Christopher Eccleston's doctor than David Tennant's
This means the animation rig doesn't ever actually make it into the game engine itself, only the deform rig. So, when you rip a model from a game, you only get the deform rig, which is typically invisible to the animators. You're missing all the tools they used before exporting.
@RemVious1
Tech can only progress so far. I hope the graphical wall we're hitting forces publishers to start investing in more experimental games with the same kinds of big budgets other AAA games are getting
@Papapishu
[reddit thread from a month ago asking the same question]
Comments:
“you shouldn’t need to do that”
“Why would you need to do that?”
“You can do this other thing that doesnt solve your problem at all”
“You’ll get more help on discord”
The most obvious difference is the sky. In the original, the sky was overpowering and ethereal. It would shift seamlessly between colors: green, purple, yellow, it would blow out your exposure when leaving buildings. In the remake it's mostly just overcast all the time
People keep saying that the multicolored skies weren’t an intentional design choice but were instead a result of “technical limitations”: genuinely what are you talking about? What technical limitation? Are you saying the PS2 couldn’t render the color blue? Honestly confused

@sophiebaybey
google images is actually just a hallucination cesspool now. it's borderline unusable for reference now, and it happened in a matter of only like a year.
If you weren't there for it, it might seem like an exaggeration, but this armor set was like a cryptid at one point. There were literally urban legends, playground myths about it. Having it was like being a God. I don't know if there will every be anything like it again
Giving Gordon Freeman a pair of glasses was one of the smartest design decisions ever made for a protagonist. Imagine a universe where Half-Life never took off because he just looked like some guy
Was very excited to go to this person’s page and see their other low poly art but it’s all just hollow empty engagement bait. No heart, no soul, no passion, just slop for the slop machine
Roxas is the best Kingdom Hearts character because any time someone starts monologuing at him about light and dark he’s just like “what the fuck are you talking about? Talk normal”
The colors were compressed, off-kilter, and flattened in a way that many understandably saw as an "issue", but I always felt added to the unease of a world that felt like it was barely being contained within the disc. The remake feels too clean and perfect
Art direction determines how good a game looks, not the graphics. The better the graphics, the more it makes every single little imperfection stand out. "Good Graphics" is a virus that eats away at every other resource in game development. It's just a honeypot for investors.
just a heads up: this isn't true. It's trolling by the AI art people. This isn't how this technology works, and we need to be more aware of what info we're spreading, lest we accidentally boost the narrative of the people we are actively fighting against.
Was reading an interview with the creator of Katamari and it’s kind of wild to know people who were making the most experimental games to ever hit the mainstream miss that era just as much as the people who grew up playing them
the dumbest phrase in the English language might be “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results” not only because it is not at all the definition of insanity, but because the concept of science itself is founded on doing exactly that
@rottytoops
It 100% feels like he wishes he could do that but it just doesn’t work with a plastic cup of iced coffee. he just keeps sliding it back on the counter when I reach for it and he has the biggest smile on his face the whole time. Absolutely adore him
@badeeeefan
It’s hilarious when people say this because the modders in charge of some of the the biggest and most impressive projects are always like “lol that’s not true”
This post is facetious, obviously, but there is sort of a truth to it. Part of the reason so many hyper-realistic graphics AAA games feel the same is that the closer you get to emulating the look of the real world, the more it has to *move* like the real world
This is all very very subjective of course, but I think the story kind of suffers from it as well. You are in a forbidden place where an ancient evil has been sealed away. You are in a sacred land to defile its guardians. You should not feel at home or welcome here
When I say every video game we get that doesn’t have season passes or pay-to-earn or lootboxes is a miracle that devs had to fight to be able to make I am being dead fucking serious
Stop using the abbreviation “ds2”, it’s too confusing. There are too many games that could be. Darksiders 2, Dark Souls 2, Darkstalkers 2, Death Stranding 2, Don’t Starve 2gether, Devil Smaycry 2
@TheSlimeRiley
I really don't think any of the people working on this game who now have to undo and completely remake months of hard work see it as a "win".
