A reminder that one of Ford’s first acts as Premier was to cut minimum wage. Today, Ontario’s minimum wage increases by 10¢ to $14.35. It should’ve been $15.75. That’s a direct cut of at least $2920 a year for full-time minimum wage workers.

Since Ford removed rent control for new units, tenants have faced massive and unpredictable rent increases. I've co-sponsored a bill to immediately reinstate rent control for all units. It's time to make it law and ensure all tenants have stability and end rent gouging.

Big box stores like Walmart and Loblaws have made record profits during the pandemic. Now, they’re using government-provided RATs as a promo item. Walmart requires a $35 min. purchase. Loblaws requires same-day receipts. Ford’s “free” rapid tests aren’t free. #FreeTheRATs

So, what’s changed? It boils down to another loophole in the RTA, a big one. Once a unit is vacated, there is no cap on how much a rent can increase. It’s called vacancy decontrol, and it incentivizes landlords to unfairly evict/renovict tenants simply to jack up rents.
