Historian, musician, reenactor, swordsman, bellydancer, priest-wrangler and tortoise servant. Owned by Reg the WW1 trench organ. Funerals a speciality.
Some of you have been asking about Reg, my trench organ. He's a

, believed to be the last military example of that vintage in the UK. He's still gigged regularly and has had quite a second career over the last two years!
Client who's booked me for an annual gig every year books somebody else because they can do it cheaper.
Undercutter pulls out with less than a week to go.
Now-ex-client leaves message on my answerphone asking me to step in, but same price as undercutter.
I think not.
Remembering my great-uncle LCpl James Crowley, 20/Tyneside Scottish. He was 20.
It's a beautiful morning here, just like it was 105 years ago. Too beautiful a day to die.
Rest well. X
@GraemePeacock1
Oh I won't be doing it... going to ignore the message and I recognise her number now. She's got a major sense of entitlement- the message wasn't even apologetic, seemed to think she'd be doing me a favour!
Nah... that can bugger right off.
@SirSydneyCamm
Northumbrian pipes. That's me leading Jack Charlton's cortege ladt year- I've been doing it professionally for (oh gods I'm old!) over two decades now so not like I'm a newbie needing exposure!
The Spawn (10) had her pal over for lunch yesterday, and I was warned to be on Best Behaviour.

Those of us over a Certain Age know why I call it a Binman Hat.
Indignant lady on FB "correcting" me because I failed to mention that Charles 1st's execution started the English Civil War.
Which had already been going seven years, but let's not let facts get in the way of huffing on t'interwebs eh?

@militaryhistori
My friend just had a message from his daughter in Sumy Oblast (sp?), she says there's a line of tanks stopped on the road, run out of petrol. The soldiers have walked to the nearest village to beg food and don't seem to know why they're there.
@jeremyshilton
Firstly, I value my product. I have some self-respect.
Add to that it would actually have *cost* me to go to work once I took petrol into account.
I've got another booking that day (full price) and demanding divas who don't like paying are more bother than they're worth.
Tonight is an important moment in The Child's life, one that left a deep impression on my childhood. First time and I won't tell her the ending...

My oldest fluffy friend, Holst, died quietly in my arms just after 1am this morning. 10's ancient for a bunny and I knew the day was coming, but burying him in the rain this afternoon was so terribly lonely.
"My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today"
Wow! Just passed the 1k mark... can't quite believe that a thousand of you lovely people follow me! Thank you for your company on this slightly bonkers journey- between Reg, tortoises and slutty shoes I do hope I raise the odd smile.
7am this morning, I started work on this beauty (Singer 28k dated Dec 1936) given to me by a friend's neighbour in December. Hadn't been used since 1960-something and siezed rigid. She's cleaned up beautifully and between WD-40 and brute force, is now running perfectly.
Had a couple of days off work so I made myself a Christmas present.
How many Tudor gowns does one need? One more, obviously...
(That's 5 now. Totally normal.)
I'm forty-two, fat, grey and overworked. I've lived alone, bar seven inopportune years married, for two decades.
Master of my own destiny eh?
Yet still my first thought on setting fire to the stair carpet is "Shit, my mother's gonna kill me..."
There is an unwritten law that where there is a hat, a horse and a soldier, the hat shall make its way from soldier to horse.
First time on a horse in well over twenty years and I didn't fall off, hang screaming round his neck or die. Huzzah!
I love my job.
One is currently (today, tomorrow and Thursday) Mary Queen of Scots at Craigmillar Castle.
Head jokes are not acceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.
Tremendously privileged to lead a battlefield tour at Otterburn with my colleague last week, attended by the Dukes of Northumberland and Buccleuch. Believed to be the first time a Percy and a Douglas were here together since they led opposing sides in 1388!
After 100 years of pollution turned the hands black, Big ben looks gorgeous restored to its original colour of Prussian Blue with gold inlay

Gotta hot date tonight... with a local history society for a Zoom lecture. Guesses what I'm speaking about? 😂

That's my P08 webbing and Brodie... and Fray Bentos swapped for a cuddly counterpart before school. No, you can't take my rifle...
Should have been heading to Bovington for five days of WW1 fun at Tankfest right now. Absolutely devastated that I've had to pull out. This year has been a bit crap.
Here's me playing with a tank a couple of years ago... I like 'em.
Viking history school workshops, then shift my WW1 militaria from my pal's Remembrance shop window display, followed by rehearsal for the wedding I'm playing for on Saturday.
Long day. Yes I look a wreck, it's been windy out!
Bauble got broken last year. Forgot about it till I was putting them away, I've repaired it with a pin, glue gun and gold nail polish.
It's just a plastic bauble. Why bother?
Because we're all broken, and sometimes it only takes a little more effort to save something than bin it.
Felt like reposting my new favourite pic of me from yesterday. Yes I'm playing a character here, but I've come such a long way in the last couple of years and the fear has gone. I'm not a victim any more and there's power in that.
Bring it on. Fight me!
It became real for me one Christmas Eve. The lady I still called the bride, having played for her wedding in the June, calling me to book my piping services for her husband's funeral.
The coffin came in with his beret atop, six months earlier worn by the groom.
RIP LCpl Stephen
Rupert's off to his new home soon! Made from an original 1940s pattern, first time I've knit anything more complicated than hats and scarves. Rather chuffed with the little fella!
Had a lot going on in Real Life lately and social media's taken a back seat, but here's the latest creation I've been working on between family stuff, photographed at 11pm after a rough day.
The second pic is nearest to the actual colour. It is very, very, VERY pink.
What a morning! Played for the unveiling of Jack Charlton's statue in Ashington today. Doesn't it just capture him perfectly?
Great turnout despite the rain, and I played the same tunes I played at his funeral. What a tribute to an amazing Northumbrian gentleman.
Back at Craigmillar Castle today and tomorrow.
Pretty chuffed with the new frock... a couple of minor tweaks last night but considering I made it on a mannequin and didn't have time to try it on before yesterday, I'm rather pleased with the fit!
My friend sent me this last night. He's an amazing photographer and a beautiful soul, and some day maybe he'll realise it.

History is everywhere if you look for it.
@NR_mcg
Between that and people begging freebies "for the exposure" (mate, if you're paying the rest of your wedding suppliers you can pay the bloody piper) I've about had it with humans!
It's been a long and frankly emotionally draining day, feeling a little quiet. Endings are always sad, no matter how necessary, and nobody marries without thinking it's for life.
This

mead is going down rather nicely though, and there's moussaka in the oven.
Back to 1848 for a George Stephenson event for local schools at Sunderland City Hall today.
I like this outfit. Took two years from making it for an event to wear it...
Just finished sewing The Spawn's Halloween outfit in time for the school disco tonight. She's been at me to make it for months.
Following in my footsteps...
Playing for my friend's funeral today. It's never easy when it's somebody you knew and loved, but it's the last gift I can give her.
Sandals started slipping on the pedals so off they came. Barefoot is often a gesture of mourning, but I think she'd have laughed.
Godspeed mate.
A privilege this evening to help create this window display with my friends Ian and Ellen at The Sewing Machine Guy in Ashington. Call in and see if you get a chance!
I know a lot of my

friends are still looking for lost family stuff. Last week I found this postcard listed on Ebay and snaffled it. Joe Buglass was my grandfather's uncle, and today it came home.
Never give up hoping.
Today I climbed on my kitchen roof with a spanner clenched in my teeth like a demented Flamenco dancer, and removed the knackered rusty old satellite dish that came free with the house.
I feel invincible.
My newly-acquired bandolier looks a bit happier after a bit of neatsfoot oil overnight, another coat today I think! But look at what I found tucked in one of the pouches... we'll never know, but I wonder what the story is?
My friend took great pleasure in telling him that his ancestor was a Sergeant in a Highland regiment on the GOVERNMENT side, under command of the brutal Duke of Cumberland.
Drum Major went white, said "Oh my god" a couple of times, then scarpered.
Careful what you wish for!
So this just broke me.
Buried my old rescue doe Rosie, came home to Mystic lying on the grave. He was lying next to her when The Child found her this morning.
Holst did the same thing after we lost his brother a few years ago
They're far more aware than we give them credit for.
Rather special addition to the collection today. A much-loved friend has given me his late dad's belt and bayonet. I'm deeply touched and quite emotional be be their custodian, covid meant I never met his dad but I hope he'd be proud I'll tell his story in our school sessions.
I'm speaking on the 15th Hussars and Sahagun for Royal Armouries (Leeds) in September. Looking forward to this one!
I'm wearing this. Obviously. And I'll have Weaponz and Stuff to play with.
Emsdorf and Victory, chaps!
Speaking to Heaton Local History society on the Home Guard in WW2 with my colleague this evening.
There's a MkVI Webley and a Fairbairn-Sykes in my handbag.
Because obviously...
It's a year ago today since I piped Jack Charlton on his last journey. What an amazing day that was, to see so much love for him. There's a strange beauty in the privilege of that final gift.
Godspeed big fella.
