Jina. Her name was Jina. That same regime that murdered her with the excuse of not being properly covered, that same regime does not allow Kurdish names. Mahsa was her formal name as Jina is forbidden. Call her Jina. Just as her mother calls her Jina, crying on her grave. Jina.
Verschrikkelijk nieuws. Opgehangen.
Komar Daroftadeh, 16. His funeral, in a village near Piranshar. He was not at a protest when he got killed. In his last Instagram story Komar wrote a poem about vulnerability of Kurdish lives. ‘Even the highest mountains avenge their loneliness on us, because our job is to die.’
Today Zara Mohammadi commenced her five year prison sentence in Sine, Eastern Kurdistan. Her crime is teaching the Kurdish language. She said goodbye with so much grace, it will only fuel more people to keep our language alive under Iranian occupation.
Tried to stay out of this mess. We have bigger battles to fight. But these men and women are literally dancing to a song that says ‘I’m a Kurd, my language is Kurdish and I’m from Kurdistan.’ It’s been Alinejad’s hobby for years to exclude our identity when tweeting in English.
Watch the awe-inspiring bravery of people of Sanandaj. Their city has been subjected to shelling by the regime since yesterday, but they went outside to dance, men and women.
Dancing is also forbidden in Iran.
#MahsaAmini
The Islamic Republic of Iran is plotting a massacre against the people of Mahabad. Armed forces are attacking the city. Electricity is cut. Internet is cut. They are shooting people at their houses. This is from a few hours ago. This is terrible news.
First images coming in from the Kurdish city of Mahabad show troops combing through the streets searching for civilians to shoot. At this moment there’s no information out on casualties and wounded. But everything points at a new low, even to Islamic Republic of Iran’s standards.
Turkey is bombing the Kurdish cities of Derik, Amûdê and: Kobanî. Where the Kurds fought ISIS and also saved the West. Where the spirit of ‘women, life, freedom’ caught fire and spread a philosophy to Iran and the world. Turkey is bombing Rojava. When it’s Kurds, who’s watching?
Ghafur Mewludi got shot yesterday in Bokan. This is his son today at his funeral. He compares the difference between violence in Tehran and Kurdistan. ‘Here it’s rockets and bullets.’ He says ‘Because the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Tehran is fascist, and in Kurdistan occupier.’
Bokan, Iranian Kurdistan. Mentioning specific locations because of severe violence used in Kurdish cities. This is why sadly it matters Jina ‘Mahsa’ Amini was a Kurd. Please keep watching, sharing, acknowledging the fight of people all over Iran.
‘Jin, jiyan, azadî’ is changing how we look at freedom of women in the Middle East and from there worldwide.
@elifxeyal
explains it so well. Watch this to understand what catalyzed the uprising in Iran and how its Kurdish roots grew towards this momentum.
Heavy fighting tonight in Shino, Iranian Kurdistan. The Kurdish region in Iran and its protesters have been under severe attack for days and it seems to worsen. While images are barely pouring in, please keep supporting.
Iranian Kurdish rapper Saman Yasin, Mohammed Boroghani and Mohsen Shekari are said to have been transferred to solitary confinement after sentenced ‘enmity against God’. Usually when Islamic Republic of Iran spreads news on solitary confinement, next morning execution follows.
This is why it’s wrong to not keep in mind Kurdish context of current events in Iran. All bases of Iranian Kurdish parties in Iraqi Kurdistan are under severe attack. Iran is punishing Kurds wherever they can make it hurt. Whatever it takes to kill hope.
Saqqez, look at this huge crowd. This is where the protests started forty days ago. Thousands are gathered around Jina (Mahsa) Amini’s grave in Saqqez, Iranian Kurdistan. There are protests and strikes in other cities, too. Forty days and people are only just getting started.
@NATO
Fuck you very much, beste wereld.
Duizenden mensen wacht anders ditzelfde lot.
European Film Academy supports the boycot of Russian films. Why would you suppress voices that manage to create, even under dictatorship? Silencing artists means you're silencing voices who by nature question their surroundings. You're silencing critics, thinkers, change makers.
Jina (Mahsa) Amini’s father and Mohammad Mehdi Karami’s father holding hands at Jina’s grave in Saqqez. She was killed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, he got executed because of the protests that then started.
Recently students at UvA approached me for a program about Iran. The lineup was published without any communication. I was not aware of regime affiliate Katebi’s attendance. I have no desire to face anyone who speaks good about the murderers of our people. I will not attend.
Historical images coming in. I can’t believe my eyes. It is said that tonight the Kurdish city of Shino is completely liberated from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s regime forces. People are in control of their city.
This morning Iran suddenly executed Kurdish political prisoner Heydar Ghorbani. His father got martyred by the same regime back in 1981. This photo by Reza Deqati is said to show Ghorbani crying on his father’s grave. Our pain and struggle carry on, generation after generation.
The people in Kurdistan and all of Iran have lost so many loved ones this year. This is the newest name. Burhan Eliasi, 22 years old, from Ciwanro (Javanrud), shot and killed by Islamic Republic’s repressive forces in his hometown today.
Performers, writers, directors, journalists arrested left and right. Saman Seydi aka Saman Yasin, rapper from Kermashan, Kurdistan in Iran was arrested last month. He just had his brief 'trial' charged with ‘moharebeh’, which usually ends with execution.
Watch this endless stream of forces deployed into the city of Mahabad. My maternal hometown. A contact says they’re everywhere, armored vehicles, masked militias. The women witnessing and filming this are scared for the lives of our people, of our youth. This is a cry for help.
The Kurdish song in the background, ‘Dardit le Gyanim’ by Mazhari Xalaqi is killing me. With this unveiled girl giving free hugs to people on the streets of Kermashan, Iranian Kurdistan. And this old man standing there. This is an entire movie in one shot.
The Kurdish city of Mahabad tonight. Home to historical revolutionaries. While we watch the fall of the Islamic Republic of Iran unfold, keep in mind all the lives it costs to reach freedom. Keep in mind the bravery. Keep in mind they need our solidarity.
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s police is shooting straight at protesters in Sardasht, where half my family is from. Please keep sharing these images alongside the more hopeful ones. The least we can do from the outside is showing what is going on.
Nesrin Qaderi was a PhD student in Tehran. Family was pressured to bury her before dawn in her Kurdish hometown Mariwan. Authorities creeped around the house all night. It is said they kidnapped the body to prevent a proper funeral, to prevent protests. Even our dead scare them.
In Iranian Baluchistan protesters have gathered, it seems after the rape of a teenager by an Iranian regime’s officer. Forces then opened fire on civilians. With so far 2 casualties confirmed and many injured. Baluchistan is suffering from some of the most severe police violence.
Soleimani was a despicable figure, everything he fought for and the Iranian regime continues to stands for has horrendous impact on lives here. As an Iranian Kurd based in Iraqi Kurdistan for a while I’d say good riddance. But I don’t know, it feels like a worse era just started.
Notice all the new graves of martyrs of the uprising in Bokan. The Islamic Republic of Iran continues the killing of unarmed civilians. People are scared and we see less images of what’s going on. Change comes with huge sacrifices. But it will come.
Everyone joking around about Iraq and Iran, don’t. People here are trying to figure if there’s gonna be another war, where to flee if so, whether aid workers are leaving, if new camps are needed, if families are safe, if they need to stack up food, if there will be retaliation.
Today the Parisian Kurdish community got hit by a shooter, killing three. It shakes millions of us around the globe. I’m a Parisian Kurd, too. Born in Paris, because of its significance to our resistance. Too many are buried there, forced into exile or assassinated by oppressors.
When we praise the bravery of Kurdish people in Ciwanro (Javanrud), it’s because we know this is the risk they take by protesting. Islamic Republic troops are roaming the city, raiding houses, arresting entire families. Our cities are militarized for months now. Don’t look away.

A reminder.
Historical images coming in. I can’t believe my eyes. It is said that tonight the Kurdish city of Shino is completely liberated from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s regime forces. People are in control of their city.
@BrendaStoter
To the entire internet: Hello from Erbil! Stop confirming attacks here while we’re trying to figure out what’s happening. Yes, some heard booms, windows shaking, but no sign of smoke whatsoever. Please keep your guesses to yourself so we can catch some sleep. It’s almost morning.
Kurdistanî media are hip and up to date. The world is fascinated. But people say Iraq, to sound dramatic. Saying Kurdistan is dramatic enough. These are images of a people climbing up from decades of darkness finally able to share their humor and identity. Please don’t disregard.
This woman sings in Kurdish in a Kurdish city. There’s no such thing as freedom without inclusion. No justice until all are free. No peace without truth. In all the good you do Masih, it’s painful watching you fight gender apartheid by punching it in the face with ethnic erasure.
In an Islamic regime, singing as a woman is forbidden. Showing your hair is forbidden. Being a woman is a crime. Yet, here we see the bravery of Iranian women. This one removes her hijab, sings openly, and challenges the gender apartheid, supported by many.
#WomanLifeFreedom
The Kurdish city of Mariwan today. When IRGC comes knocking at your door, how are you going to answer. This is how they come and arrest protesters. Look at this army of men entering this woman’s house. Look at the miserable state of this regime. Same method for endless decades.
My beloved Sardasht. My paternal hometown. The man you hear is relieved to hear revolutionary songs out of the mosque’s speakers. Sardasht is out this night supporting Mahabad. Many cities in Kurdistan are out. They are under heavy attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s troops.
Kurdish women protest unveiled and in traditional dresses — here with the ✌🏽sign we see elsewhere in Kurdistan, too — simultaneously. Because they rise up against religious, dictatorial patriarchy ánd brutal ethnic oppression. That’s their intersection.
We’re not even two weeks into 2023. The Islamic Republic has already executed ten Kurdish men — not all related to the protests, but please don’t forget ‘normal’ executions continue, too.
On this day in 1987 Sardasht in Iranian Kurdistan got heavily attacked with chemicals. This part of the genocide on Kurds is barely ever mentioned or remembered. Half my family was there. Relatives and friends are forever wounded.
They hung Mohsen Shekari in Tehran today. He was 23. It’s the fortieth day of Komar Daroftadeh in Piranshar. He was 16. I’ll never forget his father’s speech. And Hooman Abdullahi is buried in Sine (Sanandaj) today. He was 21. This is Sarina Sahed’s fortieth in Sine. She was 16.
Came across this very valuable video from 1979.
@jonsnowC4
reporting from Mahabad and Sine in what he interestingly calls Iranian Kurdistan, which really shows a fair understanding of the situation back then. Sadly we were closer to rights for Kurdish people then than we are now.
