I'm mad the pope was gifted a headdress when one of our Youth has been fundraising for new regalia for two months and still hasn't reach his $600 goal ๐ค
When the government couldn't kill us all. They took our children away to boarding schools. When that practice declined, they partnered with child welfare agencies and took our kids through foster care. 1/
Our rez is winning rn. We have some amazing youth. They had a concessions stand at the pow wow and wanted healthy options. A few people tried to discourage them. But they kept their menu.
Our tribe is currently fighting for
#LakeBack
and
#LandBack
! ๐ช
The rez line racists are calling it a "land grab" and saying it's unfair because their families have been there for 100 years.
Saying we are dumb Indians who don't deserve it. ๐
1/3
In June a known abuser entered spaces meant for the youth. He came there with a musician friend. I told the guy who hired him it was inappropriate. And he tried to tell me it would be okay.
Sometimes as a mother and an auntie we have to stand our ground. He wasn't allowed and the group was trying to call me difficult. But I'd do anything to protect the youth from that energy. The men need to step up and hold their brothers accountable.
Yt people crying racism because they aren't "first preference" to adopt native children is disgusting.
What makes them believe their way of life is better than the child staying within their tribes? When a tribe is their family in community, not nuclear. 3/
One of our Youth made a Buffalo stew with all local ingredients. It sold out! Everyone kept praising her asking for more. It was the talk of the pow wow after they gave the announcers a free bowl. They do so much for their community. And they are inspiring a new generation ๐
A Texas family believing because they go to church and want to help the "less fortunate" makes them the best interest of a native child?
No, that's genocide. 4/
We've had to fight for our next generations throughout history. And the fight continues because we value our children. They are an extension of us and our ancestors. They are the connections to our futures. 2/
The government want our kids and ICWA to be overturned. Because it's the first step to take our future as tribes. To gain access to our land and waters we've fought for.
When they steal our kids, they are stealing our futures. /6
If they wanted what was the best interest of the child they would follow ICWA laws.
But they want a token native child.
A human being as a gold star to say they are good people under the eyes of "their lord". 5/
I work in drug and alcohol prevention for my rez. And it's been the most fulfilling position I've held here because I get to work with the youth. And they call me auntie Bee.
The amount of young ones and elders that came to their stand just for the fruit was beautiful. And the little ones were jumping for joy when they got their apples or bananas. ๐
But those lands and waters are part of our 1889 treaty. We are just using the legal systems to return them to us. Rightfully so.
They said we will destroy the lake. But we aren't the ones costing tens of thousands of dollars in rescue every year.
2/3
This past winter alone there have been several people stranded on the lake needing costly rescue, trucks, and even a PLANE went into the waters!!
Because they wouldn't wait for the cold to produce healthy layers of ice before fishing. So, who is destroying the lake. ๐ค
3/3
Our tribe is fighting to regain the
#LakeBack
and
#LandBack
as agreed upon with a treaty in 1889.
This isn't about us vs. them.
It's about accountability.

We were never meant to live as single parents. Mothers or fathers. We were meant to live intergenerationally. All with supporting roles to each other.
The way society is set up now discourages this way of life. And people wonder why our youth are struggling.
Our tribe's independence day is July 6th. And we celebrate with a pow wow in our community.
I consider myself a reconnecting native. Even though I've spent most of my life on the rez and am recognized as an enrolled member. 1/
The absolute importance of ICWA! ๐งต
Recently, in our community, a brave young woman spoke out about her experience in a foster home not too far from our rez.
She was one of several native girls in the home licensed for up to 6 at a time. 1/13

I hope this teaching about humility and the wolf ma'iigan finds the right people today. Because I needed the lesson myself.
It's also a good reminder about communicating. It's not about what you said, but HOW you say it. /10

We talked about humility. In ojibwe culture, humility is represented by the wolf, ma'iingan.
A wolf lives in a pack. They support each other and understand they each have a role.
In order to survive, they need to work together. So, to be an outcast is shameful. 6/
The women we visit in jail have so much on their shoulders. Battling addiction and trying to work programs behind bars.
Oftentimes, they have lost their homes and their children. They start to lose faith. 2/
In this moment of them being in jail they are an outcast from their families. Their role isn't being fulfilled, and it's bringing them grief.
This grief is turning into anger because they feel helpless. But the thing about humility is knowing when to ask for help. 7/
Picking my daughter up from the Ojibwe immersion school. Her teacher came out to tell me she catches on quickly. Even responded back in Ojibwe when she left for the day ๐
They were frustrated with their situations, and the amount of stress not being able to care for their families has on them.
We talked about each of their viewpoints. Both of their feelings were valid. But the way they spoke to each other was not healthy. 4/
๐จURGENT!!!
My sister is being targeted, threatened & doxxed by a convicted predator who leaked her location, dob, fullname, place of work & pics of her children. They need funds for safety!

It was very emotional. They apologized to each other, and I left feeling happy we worked through it. But drained at the same time.
When we come back to our culture, we find answers, and life starts to make sense.
But when we lose sight of it, the lines blur. 9/
Today, at the women's group, a few of them lost their temper and began to argue. It got aggressive.
I intervened because their emotions were taking over. They weren't mad at each other. 3/
I made this skirt after we lost my grandfather. I was going to sell it to help with travel costs. But I kept it. And I'm glad I did. It's kind of like a memory tied to him ๐
And being able to accept it. This isn't shameful. Because in a pack, remember we work together to survive.
So we talked about support people. Who can we reach out to in a time of need? What barriers are there to reaching out? And how do we overcome these challenges? 8/
It started because one was new and hadn't received an assessment in a timely manner.
The other woman wanted her to advocate for herself instead of sitting around sad about it. 5/
I received my associates degree in the mail the other day. I'm two semesters away from my bachelor's in business admin with an emphasis in management and a minor in psychology.
This semester, I'll be taking 20 credits. 16 towards my minor and 4 towards my language ๐ซถ
We brought 21 youth to the UNITY conference from Red Lake. They've done the opening prayer, sat at the drum to sing, danced, helped MC, taught the importance of the jingle dress. I am so proud of them.
Y'all have no idea the amount of care, love, and respect in our sisterhood.
I was lost and lonely in this world with two kids. Bad relationships with everyone around me.
Now I've found my voice, went back to school, and I'm involved in community. Exactly where I want to be.
This foster home license was suspended temporarily. But online it says they can appeal on March 1st, which was Friday.
We need support to keep homes like these closed! Please call and help us keep them closed permanently!

Once a week, I go to the jail and spend time with the inmates talking about substance use, grief, sobriety, goals, and support systems.
They are still our relatives and they need to be reminded that they are cared for and loved.
The family managed a farm and treated the young girls as unpaid labor. They were forced out of bed in the early hours and made to complete farm chores.
Unable to return to their rooms until late in the evening and only allowed 5 min showers every other day. 2/13
Yesterday we were on "Indian time". Not in the sense that we were late.
But more so that we were right where we were meant to be along the way.
A long day of traveling but we soaked in the sites, enjoyed each other's company, and sang to the water as the moon shined over us.
The names of the foster parents are Scott and Deanna Solie. There are no reports or investigations attached to their license.
Their adult children also have foster licenses. They all need to be under investigation, and charges need to be filed.
It's official! I graduate on Friday! My friend painted my cap, my sis gifted me a ribbon skirt, and my big sis gifted me moccasins. I'm beyond blessed to make it this far. ๐ซถ

This is just one foster family. There are several out there just like them or worse for people of color.
We need to listen to our youth. They are not only being ripped from their families for "safety" but placed right into homes that are being paid to harm them. 12/13
To keep order, the foster parents turned the girls against each other and manipulated them into paranoia.
Restricted communication with their family and made false reports on their behavior to keep their daily rates high for housing the girls. 3/13
Today is the first day we attend a pow wow together that someone in our family has the opportunity to dance with regalia put together by relatives.
And my heart is filled with happiness. I wish my grandfather could be here to see it. 4/
Some of the girls had medical issues, and one was pregnant yet still pushed to work harder.
A few even threatened to harm themselves just to get a break from the family in a hospital. That's how they described it. Like it was a vacation. 6/13
It didn't stop there. The foster home was licensed through a 3rd party agency, and their worker was close friends of the family.
The girls were monitored at school by staff, watched in the community by neighbors, and given false hope of being adopted. 4/13
Did you ever see three sisters graduate together?
Representing all of the love their relatives shared with them?
Representing their families, clans, and communities?
Here we have graduates in Business Administration, Human Services, and Tribal Administration and Governance.
I'm not sure how the algorithm on here works.
We are looking for donations for warm clothes this winter for our youth.

In the state's 4th poorest county, we have views like this. Soon, the ground will be covered in snow and have freezing temps for about 5 months.
Our youth are in need of warm clothing. If you're able to help, we have a wishlist of items. Tysm ๐
Can we normalize taking a few days to care for our children and help them recover from illness?
As a single mother, I should not be shamed for taking time away from performing other duties during the week to care for my children.
No one listened to them! For years, this family was able to profit from young native women and laugh about it with the system that was supposed to protect them.
They broke ๐ the spirits of these young girls! 11/13
In a post shared online within the same message, they were praised for telling their story. But then went on about how loved, cared for, and important this man was to their community.
That benefited from the horrible treatment of young native women in the foster system! 10/13
The foster parents' bio daughter, other family members, and friends also received the "benefit" of having the girls complete their outdoor chores.
Often having to work outside for hours to the point of exhaustion and puking because of the lack of food and water. 5/13
We have a young drum group that were taught by the late greats of our tribe. These young men came together to continue with their teachings and are passing the knowledge down. Can we help get them to another pow wow?

Once things started moving, an incident happened. The foster dad unalived himself. The community was outraged when his death was made public.
They tried to place blame on these young women! And manipulate their feelings about coming forward. 9/13
After her testimony, SEVERAL more young women came forward with similar stories. Detailing how they were treated, lied to, manipulated, and basically had to "fight" for the love of the fp. Because the "favorite" changed based on behaviors. 7/13
With help and support, they were able to start reporting to the state what happened to them in the home.
One of the girls who aged out had a younger sister placed there who was finally moved. But the license was still active. 8/13
This year, my daughter wants to dance jingle. And all those years, I was discouraged from dancing in my childhood. I am proud to support my daughter.
I know a little about where to start. But my sisterhood keeps me hopeful. 2/

It's a common misconception that we get any handouts from the government. Most people use this myth as a means to generate division and hate.
If you live in the area, you understand there are hundreds of other lakes available too.
