I've written a few books. This one is maybe my favorite because it's really not written by me but takes the best of what I've learned from others over a number of years of reading and interviews. Only $14.99 on amazon. Volume 2 coming in 2024.

Send me your crazy "You Can't Make This Up" stories from coaching! Here's an example sent to me. Had a JV QB tell me in the first half that his right hand hurt (he had taken a hit). Said he wanted it taped up...I told him tape wasn't going to ease the pain, that's not what it…

I spoke to AD in Florida this morning. "When I came to this county in 1992, the stipend for most coaches excluding football was $2,378. In 2022, that stipend is now $2400." Imagine if we all worked for the same salary as our job paid in 1992. @PayFLCoaches @FACACoach @FIAAANews

For high school girls, the number one reason they quit is because it is no longer fun (38%). For high school boys, the number one reason they quit is because it is no longer fun (39%). There's a theme here (Kelley & Carchia, 2013).

The next rung on the ladder should not always be sought. Being assistant coach doesn't mean you have to be head coach. A high school head coach doesn't have to become a college coach to be successful. Find your fit and grow where you are. If you're meant to move up you will.

Physical education became a recognized subject by the National Education Association in 1891. It is a tragedy that, 130 years later, PE has limited availability in many schools, is often offered infrequently, and is often considered a second class or ancillary subject.

Most coaches vastly underrate the importance of athlete mental well being and its effect on success. It doesn't matter the training program or how technically good they are, if an athlete doesn't feel safe, respected, and confident, they will never play to their potential.

When learning a mental skill (e.g., playbook), repetition is less important than struggle. Struggle forces change through effort and our learning sticks. Repetition through memorization of the "correct" information is less effective for long term recall (Epstein, 2019).

Repetition of information and skills through blocked practice have immediate positive results, but long-term retention and application is low. "Interleaving", varying and mixing practice, slows down learning, but leads to flexible application and long-term gain (Epstein, 2019).

Coaching is a work of the heart. To be effective, you must be focused on building the capacity of others. Great coaches are servant leaders. They do not treat the athlete as a building block for their own glory; rather, it is the athlete who is served and recognized.
