It's simple, when Chani says "Arrakis is so beautiful when the sun is low" in Dune Part Two, and the movie reuses the exact opening shot of Part One, I cry.

Saying Villeneuve's changes to Chani are just to make her a 'strong female character' is honestly just stupid. It's a critical choice to his entire vision of the story, it serves to reframe the tragedy of Paul's arc and heighten the impact of his 'rise', which to Chani is a fall.

Genuinely one of the most inspired adaptational choices of all time. Every day I'm thankful Denis Villeneuve finally got to adapt DUNE because this adaptation truly is unlike any other. Profound reverence for the original books but immense confidence in its own artistic identity.

I LOVE this! The conviction and purpose in his voice is even more powerful when you're not reading, and fully focused on the performance. I feel like I'm only one or two viewings away from not needing subtitles entirely, at which point I think this scene will be better than ever.

Also the cut right before this scene, of Jessica breaking down due to Paul's prescience to her walking into this room fully calm and composed is such a PHENOMENAL editing choice. Every part of this movie is so dense and it subtly communicates so much through the littlest details.

One of my favourite scenes in the film, more than makes up for the exclusion of the traitor-Jessica suspicion subplot from the book. Two powerhouse performances, and this is essentially a pre-climax to the sense of imminent doom that the movie's been building since the beginning.

I went to an IMAX screening yesterday and they were over 35 people there on a Monday afternoon. This rush for a digital release makes no sense to me, especially a few days BEFORE a theatrical window extension for the film's most popular premium format?

Yeah, WB is really doing it, and not only overseas. #DunePartTwo hits digital purchase on APR 16 in the U.S., just 45 days after hitting theatres and despite still being making a lot of money and IMAX announcing a extension from APR 19

I don't think most people understand how big of an accomplishment Denis Villeneuve's Dune is. To adapt such difficult source material while retaining its depth is already a tall mountain to climb, but the way it effortlessly communicates the ideas of the world is just phenomenal.

@SpaceCowboy207 Easier to oversimplify the situation and put all the blame on the adaptations for 'introducing' orientalist elements into it, than understand that the original story by Herbert, especially the first book, was in fact orientalist in a few aspects and still really good and nuanced.

@muaddibstyle I think the intent is obviously there in the book, especially by how he talked about it, but in the first one Herbert feels a bit reluctant to fully commit to it. But by making the Fremen slightly more opinionated overall and having Paul make a mote active choice to eventually...

Need to watch DUNE Part One and Two back to back(with a short interval) in IMAX once. Sucks that theatres aren't already doing double features like that when they're literally two halves of a story, and the second one picks up right after the first.

@muaddibstyle While it was going to happen regardless of if he died to Feyd as he realizes right before the fight, it didn't happen on its own. *He* sent out his Fremen legions across the Universe, they did not march in his name without his orders. Villeneuve's arc works a bit better for that.

@DenisDayaFilms I don't think I've ever seen another actor so passionate about and informed on the source material of a big adaptation like this, let alone a text as dense as DUNE. I'm so glad we got not only an immensely talented actor, but also one who knows and cares about the original books.

I love how much Villeneuve trusts his actors to have the confidence to cover up almost their whole face in several pivotal scenes, and it pays off fantastically. Rampling as Mohiam for her entire screentime, Chalamet in Paul's first Worm Ride and his confrontation with the Baron.

@SpaceCowboy207 There's a lot of room for real critique of Villeneuve's adaptation, mostly its casting but also linguistic aspects but I just cannot take people who are parroting disprovable misinformation, for an argument that misrepresents and entirely absolves Herbert's books, very seriously.

@FAWil4 This always feels like such a superficial critique to me. The movie looks really close to how the things in the first book are described. Things only really start to get 'colourful' from Messiah after Paul takes the throne. There's a clear purpose in that evolution of aesthetics.

@BrynFD I really don't understand why people yearn so much for full blown navigators(I know partially because Lynch) when they're not even in the first book and Villeneuve still gets across the absolutely insane nature of interstellar travel in this world so simply.

Having watched and rewatched it so many times in theatres and at home over the course of 2.5 years has put Dune Part One in a special place in my heart that'll take a while for Part Two to reach. But I still find it weird to qualitatively compare the two, they're just two halves.

@paulatreideez With Part Two on track to outgross the entirety of Part One's lifetime run in just two weeks, I'm sure Messiah is a certainty. The official announcement might take a while just because Villeneuve doesn't want to do Messiah right away, so they don't have a solid release timeframe.

It's just incorrect to say Villeneuve's DUNE adaptation is narrativey static, especially in comparison to Jackson's Lord of the Rings lol. You can say the latter are much more perfect movies and I wouldn't even object but as adaptations, Dune is much more dynamic and interesting.

I don't know why some people think about Dune's themes in such an absolutist sense lol. It is very much about the dangers of manufactured positions of power and weaponized faith *and* of heroic figures themselves. The Jihad did not happen outside of Paul's control, he ordered it!

Zimmer's score on top of just being beautiful, is also so narratively rich that you can literally hear the story unfold, not even exaggerating. You hear the Bene Gesserit motif in Night on Arrakis. You hear Holy War in Herald of the Change. I could write essays about every track.

Accepting the fact that the sequel might alienate a portion of fans of the original and fully committing to telling the story they want instead of trying to make it more digestible for as many fans as possible, is one of the best creative decisions a game developer has ever made.
