You've been told that Oxford is the oldest uni? Think again. A North African woman founded Al-Karaouine in 859 That Adam Smith is the 'father' of economics? Ibn Khaldun developed a labour theory of value, gov stimulus, law of supply/demand 500yrs earlier #decoloniseeconomics

Who is Ibn Khaldun? Just the scholar who developed a labour theory of value, principle of supply & demand, a resource curse thesis, the tax rate/gov revenues curve, 500yrs before those who took credit. If you haven't learned about him, you MUST decolonise your economic knowledge

Some might think the increase in returns from the division of labor was Adam Smith’s pathbreaking insight. Here is Ibn Khaldun four centuries earlier:

An absolute honor to give an induction to the 1200 mayors & governors of Colombia 🇨🇴 Local governments have a key role to play in green economic transformation, & local industrial policy deserves more attention. Mucha suerte!

Commodity dependence is a state that’s hard to change. But it must not be seen as fate. @UNCTAD ’s Commodities & Development Report 2021 explains how developing countries can harness technology and innovation to escape the trap.

Human rights are universal. These values should be applied to ALL populations, regarding of nationality, ethnic, or religious background. Preventing access to water, electricity and movement should NEVER be endorsed, not least celebrated. The EU is loosing credibility here.

Russia’s attacks against civilian infrastructure, especially electricity, are war crimes. Cutting off men, women, children of water, electricity and heating with winter coming - these are acts of pure terror. And we have to call it as such.

Electric buses are the way forward for any policymaker that is serious about sustainability. The graph below does not even capture the differences in material footprint based on lithium mining needs, as shown by @triofrancos and her colleagues.

What can resource-dependent countries learn from athletes in order to diversify their economies & escape commodity dependence? A rather unconventional (but timely!) piece that I enjoyed writing with @alialsaffar ( @IEA ) & Assia Elgouacem ( @OECD ) @LSE_ID

Yesterday, I watched this brilliant movie. Not a horror movie, yet frightening because of how much it mirrors reality today & the state of politics & social media in helping us address existential threats, whether the #ClimateCrisis , #pandemics or a comet. Bravo. #DontLookUp

Remembering the massacre of 45,000 Algerians on 8 May 1945. As the victory against Fascism & the holocaust machine was proclaimed, Algerians were massacred by the French army for marching for freedom. Freedom celebrated in Europe, and oppression just across the sea. The Paradox

17 October 1961. Paris, France. 60th anniversary of a dark day when the French Government drowned hundreds of Algerians who were marching peacefully for freedom and independance. Duty to remember. (And to remind and re-educate those who want to deny and rewrite History).

There is evidence that both Adam Smith & Marx had read English translations of Ibn Khaldun's work (already accessible at the time). Arthur Laffer is a different case: he recognized his work was inspired by Ibn Khaldun, and said himself we shouldn't call it the Laffer curve.

What happens when tax cuts are given to the wealthiest to "boost" economic growth? Wealth does not trickle down & remains concentrated at the top. Growing frustration leads to social unrest & instability that affect everyone. Thanks @NLepan for this nice visual #CollapsingPyramid
