I've noticed at funerals the eulogy for women always focuses on how altruistic they were and "they gave up their lives to help others, serve their husbands, their children were their whole world". With men it focuses more on their character, their life story, their humour.

This resonates so hard bc my grandmother died a month ago and that was her exact eulogy. It's so sad how society conditioned women like her only to be a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and prevented her to explore her own path. (1/2)

Will it be wrong then at my age of 70 at my wake for these words to be said because this has been my life giving and caring for others and I would hope that at my funeral people would be made aware of that and I would be honored for what I have done in my life. Hoping not soon

Read The Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate` he talks about how this kind of altruism can literally be so toxic it can be what makes women sick and kills them

I was at a cemetery in Erie, Pa and saw a large family plot where everyoneโs name and dates were listed except for one that just said Grandma. It may have been affectionate, but I got the feeling it was because no one knew who she was outside Grandma. Iโll never forget it.

Iโve noticed this is also often the narrative on

. Itโs the selfless women who are โdeservingโ of the showโs makeovers, because โthey do so much for others.โ
