If you are interested in some interesting reading on a cold Saturday, let me offer a project that I've been working on. With letters and documents from the Dilworth collection, I have created an online collection about the
#militaryhistory
of
#California
.
Did you know? In the 2020 General Election,
@KevinKileyCA
was reelected with more votes than any other Republican Assembly candidate in California history.
There are so many jobs in the
#CACapitol
right now. SO MANY! The legislature needs good, smart, and ethical problem-solvers to help solve complicated problems (and not cause new ones).
Know someone who'd be good? Please tell them about these opportunities!
Most likely, you've never clicked the "feedback" link at the top of the LegInfo site. I can guarantee that you that if you do follow this link, you'll find something you didn't expect.

Can't tell you how much we appreciate your happy distractions. You're a bright point on my Twitter feed and I love it. Also, it saves me a lot of time because I don't have to be on NextDoor.
Hi
@AlexCVassar
! Iโm talking to a few legislators and theyโre saying that the plurality of the legislature are Aquarians like me. Is this true and historically has this been true?
My friends, I spent some time last night trying to find a
#CALeg
race in the "modern" history closer than the current
#AD47
@christyholstege
&
@gregrwallis
#DramaInTheDesert
.
I failed.
I went back to 1958 and wasn't able to find anything closer. More research tonight.
Folks are like "The recall qualified and CA is losing a congressional seat! This is the craziest week ever in CA politics!"
I'm here thinking; "Well, back in 1818, the pirate Hippolyte Bouchard captured Monterey and declared that California was part of Argentina [for six days]."
I finally tracked down the full BEST
#CALEG
LETTER EVER... a 1960 letter from Assemblyman Don Allen to Senator Randy Collier. I had read it years ago and was blown away.
It's about legislator pay and is amazing writing from the first paragraph all the way to the PS note.
After
#MLK
was assassinated, Speaker Unruh appointed a three-Assemblymember delegation to attend the funeral. At the airport, the rental car company would only release the car (rented by the State of CA) to Bill Bagley because the other two (Willie Brown & Leon Ralph) were Black.
One of my Pandemic Projects related to

Yes, I am that fun.
6 years ago today. One day after I was issued a new iPad by the
@CAStateLibrary
, I was walking to work with it and it started to absolutely pour.
@kcranews
was there to cover it.
10 seconds in, on the right side of the frame, you'll see a folding mattress. That's the office of a person who puts EVERYTHING into their work ensuring that no matter the politics, people can trust the process. I'm proud to know folks like that.

It was officially renamed Tahoe in 1945.

Voluntolding sometimes led to one of the most secretive of

practices; the Interpartisan Skip Walk (when the two GOP staffers assigned to walk a precinct would recognize the two DEM staffers assigned to the same precinct and the four would skip the precinct and go to lunch)

This morning a good friend of mine,
@ricardopablo99
, died after a multi-year fight against cancer. He was on the panel that selected me for the
@CapFellowsCSUS
and later served as an important professional mentor, a fellow lover of history, and most of all a friend.
I was elected to a park district board in 2016 with 0 votes (too few candidates to appear on the ballot).
I wanted to let you know that I ran for reelection & now (with $0 raised, 0 votes received and only telling about five people that I was running)... I've got another 4 years!
Trying to keep track of who is running for what in the California state legislature? With all the new seats and late-breaking announcements, it's hard to track. The good news is that there's a crowd-sourced way to get the latest information.
From the
@realassemblyman
archive: a reminder that it was 47 years ago this week that freshman state legislator
@RepMaxineWaters
authored HR-6 changing the plural "Assemblymen" to "Assembly members" when it includes both genders.
Article is worth your time!

Just took the oath of office for my second four-year term as a local park district director. After 12 hours of being out of office (my previous term ended at midnight) I'm an elected official again!
As an elected official, you win some and you lose some. At last night's park district board meeting, I failed to convince a majority of the board to see things my way and I was elected chair for another year.
Fun Fact: The desks in the Senate and Assembly Chambers have been serving California's lawmakers since they were purchased from John Breunerโs furniture company 1869.

Here is a link to all open State Library positions:
2021: A year that saw an Attorney General appointment, a Secretary of State appointment, a US Senate appointment, four legislative special elections, and a gubernatorial recall. In terms of state political history, the shark was jumped way before tonight.
Wondering how much rain

could potentially receive next week???
Well, here's the current expected rainfall totals from Tue thru Christmas Day. These totals are just preliminary as the computer models still have some differing ideas on timing, amounts, etc..

Thinking of my friends at work over in the big white building (and in the LOB and district offices across the state).
You are serving our state in challenging and uncertain times and your work is appreciated. Be smart, stay safe, and encourage eachother!
It's the last night of session for the California state legislature and I was reminded of a "end of session" tradition observed by the State Assembly during its first decade (1850s).
Got any legislative history questions? We're open for business!
At some point last year I took a map of California's COVID regions (made by the awesome
@edit4life
) and wrote the most recent years in which each region had a resident serving in the US Senate.
Just cleaning up my desktop this afternoon, found it, and thought I'd share.
Terrible news! Back in his
#CALeg
days, he was one of the few Senators who almost always greeted both the Senate majority and GOP floor staff on session days. Praying for a full recovery.

@MattHaneySF
will be the 3789th Assemblymember in California history. He'll be the youngest Assemblymember to represent SF since
@RepSpeier
.
Last six SF Assemblymembers younger than Haney:
* Willie Brown
* John Burton
* George Moscone
* Leo McCarthy
* Art Agnos
* Jackie Speier
BREAKING: SF Supervisor Matt Haney commands a wide lead in the state assembly race in first ballot count, election day.
@MattHaneySF
: 63%
@DavidCamposSF
: 36%
58,000 ballots were counted, consisting of vote by mail before election day.

I love this institution where I get to work. Where else are you going to find such a beautiful workspace, absolutely brilliant coworkers, and literally more books than you could read in a handful of millennia?

Very happy to announce that an updated edition of "California Lawmaker" will be available soon. It was amazing to reflect on how much has changed in the four years since the first version in 2017.
Bill Bagley, aged 93, left the State Assembly just over 47 years ago and is the last remaining member of the

Class of 1961. I love that he still answers his phone on the second ring with a booming "Hello my friend! How are you today?"

The Top 100 is coming! The 14th Edition of Capitol Weekly's Top 100 List will be released at a lively end-of-session reception at The Sutter Club, Tuesday, August 9. Get tix here:
When I was a kid, I ran into and spilled an entire Cup o Noodles on Leon Panetta (then the local Congressman) at Monterey Boatworks. I think it hurt (the soup was fresh out of a microwave) but he smiled and said that these things happen.
Then later he killed Bin Laden.
This seems like a reasonable time to recycle my favorite first paragraph of a

letter.

tweet that you've been waiting for:
As it currently stands, there are 32 members of the Class of 2022. Their zodiac symbols are:
4 each - Aries and Cancer
3 each - Aquarius, Capricorn, Gemini, Pisces, Scorpio, and Taurus
2 each - Leo, Sagittarius, and Virgo
I recognize that few are still interested in this topic, but an important milestone was passed recently. As vote counting wraps up in the 2021 Recall, the number of ballots cast (12.8M) has now passed those cast in the 2018 General Election (12.7M)

How can you ID the real political nerds? They're the ones looking forward to seeing the results from the recall.
Not what was reported on weeks ago, I'm talking about the Statement of Vote. That's the moment when elections literally become written history.

Looking for a poorly-drawn infographic depicting the last time that each of California's counties were represented by a Senate President pro Tem? It's here!
I know that they've already done a memorial, but I feel like it would be entirely appropriate to adjourn in memory of

at the end of this two-year session.
"Of the 171 women to serve in the legislature in the past century, only forty-six have served in both houses of the legislature."
In the near future,

will become the 47th.
In 2020,
@BuffyWicks
received more votes than any other candidate for State Assembly (not just in that election, but IN ALL OF CALIFORNIA HISTORY).
That's what I think of when I see this.
Itโs official! ๐ Iโve filed to run for re-election to the State Assembly.
Itโs been an incredible honor serving

A reminder: The D.O. Mills family has always maintained that if it's not on display in the Rotunda, they want it back. Letter from the 1980s when Isabella got moved for the big restoration and D.O. Mills family tried to get her back.
Let's have a quick little discussion about the
#CALeg
State Senate after the next general election in 2022. For the 2023-24 session, the state will be represented by half a Senate elected under new (2021) districts and half representing the old (2011) districts.

Deputy M. Basden is being awesome. A guy got on playing rap music on his phone, Basden correctly guessed the artist, explained the "no music on the train" rule and is now selling the guy on the merits of Johnny Cash. I am in awe.
As Speaker, McCarthy holds the highest federal rank of any former

Of the other Californians to hold high federal office (Presidents Hoover, Nixon and Reagan, VPs Nixon and Harris, Speaker Pelosi, and Chief Justice Warren) none were alumni of the

Not that it's a major category, but I think it's cool that my new book is in the top 500 in "U.S. State & Local History" books on Amazon. Thank you everyone!
Sacramento is an interesting place and I'm always interested in how communities view themselves. So here's what may be a ridiculously divisive question that I'd like to know your thoughts on:
Which of the following are "suburbs" of Sacramento?
Everyone: "Hey! It's been 24 hours without an earthquake in the Sacramento Delta area. Cool! I'm glad that weirdness is over.
Those Delta faultlines: "Wait for it... wait for it..."
