Google maps is amazing. I'm able to chart to the minute how long it'll take my character to get from one part of a random city to another by foot vs car. I can see what an intersection looks like. I can travel the world. In my bathrobe. Like Arthur Dent.
It's neat.

Also Atlas Obscura. You find this neat thing near where you have something set, and then it's two hours later and you've learned a whole lot about something you didn't even know about but is a PERFECT fit for what you're writing.

Try - drops you in a random point in Google maps and you have to guess where you are by placing a pin in a world map. 5 locarions per round, scores are calculated based on distance your guess is from actual location. Fun.

Oh yes. I can see how that would be a valuable tool for field research.
Any more, if I'm driving into a big city and need to find a place, I'll do the last mile on streetview. I find it so helpful to have visual queues in addition to the street layout.
Great tool.
