Delegate, Arlington’s 2nd District - Virginia House of Delegates | Working to End Homelessness & Housing Insecurity | Proud

Board Member
I grew up experiencing homelessness & know what it’s like to feel invisible.
I’m running to protect
#HumanRights
, support
#Families
, empower
#Workers
& break down barriers for Virginians. This video details why I stepped up to run for House of Delegates.
I am sick to my stomach. Words cannot describe the fury & anger that I feel.
We have a right to assemble w/out being shot at & gassed. I was just with these ppl at the
#WashingtonDCProtest
& we were peaceful. Trump used militarization against peaceful protesters for a photo op.
Y’all take a second to soak in this historical moment on the eve of
#Juneteenth
.
We have TWO BLACK WOMEN RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR in Virginia! We have the opportunity to make history in Virginia and elect the FIRST BLACK WOMAN GOVERNOR in the country! ✊🏽
As a VCU alum I’m horrified at how quickly protestors were met with such force. As a student, I protested many times on that campus and I strongly believe that students have the constitutional right to do so peacefully without being subjected to excessive force and arrest.
Listening to my tape, after VCU police arrived on the scene, they warned protestors they would arrest them for trespassing, waited three minutes, made another warning, and then moved in. All in all it took about 12 minutes between police's arrival and their use of force.

@GovernorVA
knows EXACTLY what he’s doing during
#BlackHistoryMonth
. Growing up in VA, I was one of a few Black students in my AP courses and I learned revisionist history.
I also learned these words from George Orwell: he “who controls the past controls the future.”
Just witnessed my parents reunite for the first time tonight in over 34 years—since right before I was born. Tonight I took the very first picture that I own of my parents together.
Nothing can begin to describe or top this positive moment in my life tonight.
As the granddaughter of a sharecropper, as a descendant of slavery, and for the 1st time in over 400 years, it was MY deepest HONOR to 2nd the motion to make the honorable Delegate
@DonScott757
Speaker-Designee, which will make him the first Black Speaker in Virginia history.
What a night! We flipped the House BLUE & I am so honored to be elected to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates to represent the people of Arlington's new 2nd House District!
This election represents the culmination of a grassroots, people-powered campaign. THANK YOU! 🙏🏽
I am deeply honored and excited to announce my run for Virginia House of Delegates to represent District 2 in Arlington! Can you make a contribution to help get our grassroots campaign started?

I just got word that the Governor plans to veto my bill HB362 which would close the dating partner loophole. The Governor’s veto will protect abusers and undermine public safety.
We MUST disarm domestic violence & protect survivors. I will keep fighting to close this loophole!
Thinking about Senator
@pwcdanica
early this morning. She’s a damn hard worker, knows her stuff, is always well prepared on her bills, and is someone that I deeply admire. I’m truly disgusted by the inexcusable misgendering of this amazing Senator and public servant by the LG.
I was extremely grateful to see my Mom first thing this morning following a terrifying car accident last night. Someone knocked my car into the concrete barrier on l-395 and my car flipped up and slid along the wall. Felt so lucky to hug my Mom today & tell her I love her.
Just filed my first bill removing two exemptions in Virginia's minimum wage law related to agricultural workers. This is a vestige of the Jim Crow-era and House Bill 157 would finally remove it from the books.
I'm proud to endorse
@EWarren
for President! Her plans always take into account & include components for racial equity as well as for LGBTQIA+ and immigrant rights—she has a true intersectional & inclusive approach to policymaking and governance. I'm

“You have a quorum Madam President.”
Senate President Pro Tempore
@SenLouiseLucas
presides over the
@VASenate
today. She is the first Black person and Woman to serve in this role.
We love to see it!
To the folks of House District 2: I’m truly honored to be your Democratic nominee!
THANK YOU to all who have volunteered, donated, voted, believed in our movement, and shared our vision to create a more equitable, accessible Commonwealth. On to November!
It’s official, y’all! I’m on the ballot!
Many thanks to all who signed my petitions! Looking forward to earning your vote in the 2nd House District in June and then working to flip the House and hold strong on the Senate in November!
Let’s do this!!!
Incredibly proud of my favorite former page/high school senior
@ethanclynne
& the way he stands up for folks in VA. He should never have been attacked by Team
@GlennYoungkin
/
@GovernorVA
& is owed a full apology.
There’s no way a tweet like that goes out without authorization.
While he acknowledged the situation, Governor Youngkin did not apologize and did not condemn what happened over the weekend. I still hope he does, and that he will take time to recognize the culture of toxicity he has created within his first month of office.
My favorite election day moment was witnessing the sparkle and spirit in this young girl as she enthusiastically handed out sample ballots and asked people if they’ve voted yet. The upcoming generations are my everyday inspiration 💕
I am beyond honored to be selected to the
#ForbesUnder30
list. My mom cried once she read the words “once homeless herself” in my bio. Thank you so much,
@Forbes
.
#LawandPolicy
I just proudly cast my vote along with my House Democratic colleagues to pass the bill to increase Virginia's minimum wage and keep us on the path to $15/hr in order to support working families all across the Commonwealth. Now HB1 heads to the Senate.
Out-of-touch rich people who don’t make minimum wage & don’t live paycheck to paycheck always have the audacity to say: “The free market for salaries & wages works.”
VA’s workers are the backbone of our economy & the Governor just turned his back on them/denied them a pay raise.
It was great to see so many great folks at Madam President
@SenLouiseLucas
’ Blue Brick Wall Fundraiser today! It’s so critical to defend and grow our majority in the Senate and flip the House of Delegates! Onward to November!
Today, the Governor signed my bill, HB368, into law, which begins the process to allow a single stairway exit for smaller residential buildings instead of requiring multiple stairway exits.
Just filed a bill that would close the dating partner loophole to keep partners safe from gun violence.
Currently in Virginia, spouses convicted of domestic abuse can't possess a gun, but that rule doesn't apply to dating relationships. (1/2)
ICYMI: Here’s one of my favorite moments from the
@VaBlackCaucus
Pre-Session Reception last night. Honoring the legacy, service, and history made by Madam President
@SenLouiseLucas
—the first Black Person & first Woman to serve as VA Senate President Pro Tempore
Disgraceful. Justin has repeated his appalling comparison to Emmett Till since 2019.
My heart goes out to survivors tonight as Justin Fairfax continues to repeat these traumatizing & harmful talking points that will replay again & again. This harm is not new & cannot continue.
I was incredibly proud of my seatmate Delegate
@PhilforVirginia
as he told his sister’s story, emphasized the importance of accessibility, and delivered his point of personal privilege in sign language ♥️.
If elected, I’d be the 1st Black person elected to the Arlington state delegation.
Dating back to Reconstruction, John B. Syphax was the last Black person to represent this area in the GA. He represented Alexandria County before Arlington Co. was established.
#BlackHistoryMonth
It is with immense sadness that I extend my deepest condolences to Congressman McEachin’s family. The Commonweath and the nation will miss his tireless advocacy, leadership, and fight for justice. He was such a great person and so kind to all.
Wishing my amazing Chief of Staff Madison McCabe a very Happy Birthday today! Thank you for all you do for Arlington and the Commonwealth of Virginia!
P.S. Nobody try to email her, call her, or text her for work stuff for 24 hours 😂
One of the toughest things about putting yourself out there for public office is sharing your story. I’ve kept a lot of this private over the years, but I’ve found that sharing my story can help humanize struggles we face & help others share their story.
Was proud to join
@MomsDemand
Arlington at their
#WearOrange
event where folks rallied to show our collective power in addressing gun violence and to honor and remember victims and survivors of gun violence.

@DelChrisHead
—I was literally a “high school student that worked in an ice cream parlor.” I worked 3 jobs & took multiple buses to get to work. My entire paycheck from the ice cream parlor went toward paying our rent & providing for my family.

Tonight was LOVE! I’m so so proud of my friend Congresswoman
@JennMcClellanVA
! History was made and words cannot begin to describe that feeling. I know she’s going to be a force in Congress & I can’t wait to see what she does!
My heart is so full after last night’s official kickoff for my campaign! I was so honored to be in the room with so many incredible neighbors, friends, grassroots leaders, labor leaders, advocates, students, elected leaders, candidates, and more. Thanks to all who joined us!
BREAKING!
@VictoryFund
just announced it is endorsing my candidacy for House of Delegates - District 2! Victory Fund only endorses candidates who will be strong voices for equality and who are building campaigns that are on-track to win. I’m so honored to receive the endorsement!
Incredibly excited and honored to have the support and endorsement of Congressman
@DonBeyerVA
! Thank you for all you do for the folks of the 8th Congressional District, Virginia, and beyond.
Tomorrow the VA Board of Ed will meet to review the
@GovernorVA
admin’s proposed revisionist standards of learning—which MUST BE REJECTED. That proposal intentionally omits key history & contributions from AAPI, Black, Latino, LGBTQIA+ leaders & it blatantly whitewashes history.
The VLBC condemns & rejects the revisionist draft standards proposed last week by the Gov’s Administration. The VLBC has deep concerns w/the politically-drafted revised standards that literally revise, whitewash & omit important history in schools.
VLBC letter to the Board:
Today on the
@VASenate
floor,
@BillDeSteph
used the personal responsibility myth to argue against the legalization & decriminalization of marijuana. As someone who grew up in poverty, it pains me to see the personal responsibility narrative perpetuated. (1/9)
.
@BarbaraFavola
sighs w exhaustion at
@BillDeSteph
asking whether she thinks “drugs are a way to get out of poverty.” He doesn’t think the latter, so doesn’t support preferential licensing to those targeted by drug enforcement, “thinks this is diminishing the rights of others.”
Cragg will always be remembered. There aren’t enough words to adequately describe his impact and how much he meant to me and so many across Arlington, the Commonwealth, and beyond. I loved Cragg and will miss him deeply.
Sending so much love to his family and many friends.
I’ve been super excited to host and take part in many public forums & public discussions to listen to constituent priorities & share my legislative ideas. And here’s another upcoming opportunity!
Please join us at the Arlington Delegation Pre-Session Forum this Monday. Details:
Extremely saddened by the passing of Emily Beer. She was a dedicated, loyal, and kind friend. I loved that she was always unapologetically herself. She was someone I could call and we’d talk for hours. I saw her last month & we made plans to catch up 😞. I’ll miss her so much.
I’m so proud of
@VaBlackCaucus
Vice Chair & Congresswoman-elect
@JennMcClellanVA
!
The first Black woman to be elected to represent VIRGINIA in Congress. And this happened during
#BlackHistoryMonth
!!!
Congrats, my friend ❤️.
Thank you to the residents of the 2nd House District who reached out with questions and concerns.
Below is my statement on why I voted No on the arena proposal today:
Thanks to
@ArlingtonYDs
I got to spend some time talking to
@kerrywashington
about the importance of voting!
VIRGINIA—Today is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the November 7th election without a provisional ballot!
Make sure you’re registered here:
I was so honored to kick off my first floor introductions in the VA House of Delegates this week with the introductions of
@VAYD
& Team Enough Arlington!
Just finished knocking doors in South Arlington for
@DonBeyerVA
,
@Matt4Arlington
, and
@BethanyZSutton
!
Had great conversations with neighbors about key issues that matter to them and the November election ahead.
Today I will be presenting HB 157 before the Labor & Commerce committee. HB 157 would allow farmworkers and temporary foreign workers to be protected under VA’s minimum wage law.
The committee will meet 1/2 hour after the House adjourns. Watch live here:
For example: United Daughters of the Confederacy led a successful effort to revise history in schools/put up confederate statues. They created textbook committees & had school boards BAN books they deemed “unjust to the South:” anything that didn’t support their lost cause myth.
Representation matters. For too long, people who held public office didn’t look like me. Growing up, I rarely saw my reality reflected in elections. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come.
Today, I was racially profiled and reminded once again that there is much more work to do.
So shattered by this news and thinking a lot about Shawn’s family, girlfriend, and loved ones. He was such an amazing friend and I can’t believe he’s gone😞. Sending love out to everyone in the VAYD community.
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you all that yesterday evening, we lost Shawn Soares after a car accident in Richmond, Virginia near Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus. Today, our VAYD community has been rocked losing one of our own.
My girl Lily is such a badass candidate💕. I’m so so proud of the race her and her team ran in SWVA. They closed that gap and came incredibly close to winning. This was the
#1
race I was rooting for and I’m ready to help again in 2025. Thank you,
@LilyForDelegate
.
This tweet is limited to 180 characters - 3 shy of the # of votes I lost by. I can’t thank folks enough for all the support our campaign received in the last year. (More to come on that later!)
One thing is for sure: HD-41 refused to be overlooked. We’ll keep fighting in SWVA
We have made a lot of progress and will fight like hell to make a lot more. We will not stay silent or back down as Governors DeSantis, Glenn Youngkin & others push forward efforts to erase our history and ignore the racial injustices that remain in our society today.
Whitewashing & revising history is a deliberate tactic used to justify systemic injustices & perpetuate white supremacy. Guess what else we didn’t learn about in school that we’re seeing again: the many successful campaigns to revise and erase Black History—American History.
Across this nation, we have been fighting to right the wrongs of the past. They know that it is difficult to correct the wrongs of a past that we do not teach. They know it’s difficult to address and root out racism if we pretend it doesn’t exist in every facet of our society.
My bill to finally include farmworkers in the VA Minimum Wage Act passed the General Assembly for the first time in VA history. HB157 represents a step toward erasing the troubling legacy of Jim Crow from state law while supporting essential workers who put food on our tables.
Excited to announce my new commission appointments by Speaker
@DonScott757
!
As a longtime member of many related state & local boards, I look forward to serving & contributing to the Virginia Housing Commission, Addiction & Recovery Council, & the Behavioral Health Commission!
Committee assignments are in and I’m honored to serve on the General Laws, Transportation, and Public Safety Committees!
List of committees and information found here:
Virginia is one of 2 states that permanently disenfranchises formerly-incarcerated individuals after serving their sentence. Gov. Youngkin's extreme policy requiring all to apply for restoration is a huge step backwards. We must pass

!
Valentine’s Day is my favorite at the GAB! ♥️ I surprised every member of the
@VaHouse
& Clerk Nardo with a Virginia-grown succulent from Full Pocket Farm. The funds from my purchase went toward supporting their amazing programs for folks w/disabilities.
As a responsible gun owner, I believe we must work together to stem the gun violence epidemic.
HB 158 would require that any firearm sold or transferred comes with a locking device, which will reduce the likelihood of tragic and preventable incidents.
On April 6th, Freddie’s (Arlington's only LGTBQ+ Bar) received a bomb threat due to the Family Fun Storytime Brunch.
Freddie’s is in my district & one of my favorite places. We will NOT stand for threats! We’re here at the LOVE Fest standing against hate!
Love wins! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
I had a chance to vote early in the Presidential Primary before heading back to Richmond last weekend!
If you didn’t have the chance,

Today, I received an endorsement from
@CleanVirginia
! I am so thankful for their continued support as we work together for an equitable transition to clean energy that is accessible and affordable for all Virginians.

As we recognize the first day of
#BlackHistoryMonth
in the Commonwealth, I wanted to highlight a true inspiration to me and so many others: the Honorable Yvonne B. Miller—the first Black Woman elected to the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia.
“‘I’m proud to break barriers in this role…there is still so much more work to do to overcome ongoing, systemic issues that disproportionately impact Black & Brown [communities]’”
Thank you
@VCU
@VCUnews
♥️!
My bill HB1252 passed the House w/62 votes. This would’ve fixed a loophole in our probation law that has resulted in increased jail time for nonviolent technical violations. Holding people in jail for months/years on nonviolent, technical violations does not improve public safety
The governor killed 10
@JusticeFwdVa
priority bills tonight. One of them passed with 62 votes in the House; nearly all had Republican votes in support.
Locking people up for drug possession does not make us safer. Criminalizing autism and mental illness does not make us safer.
EXCITING NEWS: I’m thrilled to have the endorsement of
@runforsomething
(RFS)—the groundbreaking organization that recruits & supports strong voices in the next generation of progressive leadership. Their support means the world to me & I am honored to have their endorsement.
Virginia—To be eligible to vote in the Dem Presidential Primary on March 3rd, you must register to vote by this Monday, February 10th.
What Matt said👇🏽
Hey y’all👋🏽! I turned 35 today! On my birthday, I’m raising funds to continue supplementing the pay/salary of my hardworking staff! They don’t get paid enough in state funds for the tremendous work they do! Please consider chipping in $35+ to help out!
Rather than invest in our schools,
@GlennYoungkin
& Repubs want to give big tax handouts to corporations and the wealthy.
Dems are fighting to give kids what they need to thrive: fully-funded schools w/more support staff & resources.
