“Are you autistic? Jeez you don’t look a bit of it. Sure aren’t we all a bit on the spectrum these days. C’mere are you able to count cards or anything like that?”
Awful when a positive motion about autism turns into the spreading of incorrect information. Public should be able to trust what they hear from TDs - Mattie McGrath questioning cause of autism and describing it an epidemic is dangerous, hurtful and factually wrong
A sad evening. Ireland continues to be an outlier in not providing essential in-school support for students with complex needs who have suffered greatly. The developmental impact of school closures are and will be felt by our community for a long time. We need to find a solution
Double celebrations in our house today!
@GemmaHar
@SimonHarrisTD
both have their birthdays today - born the same day, 3 years apart! For their sakes I won’t share the numbers involved! Happy Birthday guys 💙💜
Got word this evening that I have been formally appointed by

A quick hello following my first day in the new job! Creating a brand new Department for Higher & Further Education & Research, Innovation & Science -a Department with both an economic & social policy focus. Lots to do! Will keep you updated as we progress

THREAD Tonight is a very difficult evening for many children with additional needs and their families. Children who have already suffered will now continue to, each day school is closed. It’s not a cause for celebration, it’s a time for deep reflection.
My son with additional needs sent in a voice message to kids in the car on FM104 to tell them how great his Daddy was.
Two grown adults took the piss out of him for the sound of his voice and the delay getting the words out.
I'm so upset. 1/2
It is really important that we recognise that not every person in the community can wear face masks. Many autistic people would find it deeply distressing and we can’t allow a public stigma to develop
#rtept
I’ll be on.
@morningireland
tomorrow sometime after 8:30am discussing the need for more support and clarity for autistic students and other students with additional educational needs returning to school. Tune in!
This day 5 years ago we launched
@AsIAmIreland
its been an incredible 5 years and we are excited to double down on our efforts over the next 5 to ensure every autistic person is accepted “as they are” and has a chance to reach their own personal potential and happiness
Unfortunately
@NormaFoleyTD1
the advice isn’t clear for students with additional needs. 1/2 a page in the roadmap for re-opening schools doesn’t explain how inclusion will work or provide the support needed to make it work. Urgent action and investment needed
#rtept
Vital that the role of professionals such as OTs/SLTs/Psychologists working with autistic people is fully understood. Their support is vital for quality of life in a system which is totally overwhelmed. No such staff should be diverted to COVID duties - they are essential
Happy
#InternationalWomensDay
! Special shout-out to the autistic women in our community who are too often invisible, unrecognised and unsupported - this needs to change!
Welcome judgement from High Court confirming what many in the autism communities have known for so long
@HSELive
is acting unlawfully in failing to provide a real Assessment under Disability Act 2005. We now need to urgently hear how system will change
This day 10 years ago we launched

for powerfully bringing it to life
Thanks to
@IrishMailSunday
for giving me the opportunity to write about Autistic burnout in today’s paper - an important topic which is not widely understood.
This is deeply troubling. History teaches us never to trust those who attack books. Libraries are spaces in which everyone should feel not just welcome but represented.
📣 Public Notice 📣
In light of planned demonstrations on Grand Parade, Cork City Library will close to the public at 12.30pm on Saturday 29th July. This decision is taken in the interests of the safety & well-being of the public and library staff.
Best of luck to students and staff returning to special classes across the country today. Fantastic to see a return of this essential support for 8,500 children. Government now must prioritise a full-return for pupils in special school & those with additional needs in mainstream
Thanks to
@IrishMailSunday
for giving me the space to set out

A very upsetting article that couldn’t but make you angry. Inclusion isn’t just about places - it needs to be matched with training, resources and, critically, governance. The barriers which both the State and schools present to Autistic children are cruel

I’m a frontline healthcare worker who, during the first wave of covid pandemic,risked his life,his pregnant wife’s life and more importantly the life of my daughter who has chronic lung disease.I chose to serve this country and stayed behind when many left for better future.
I am over the moon! We now must ensure every step is taken to see special classes and schools, and young people in mainstream who need it, return to in-person learning next Thursday. We must also explore how students in mainstream second-level w/ additional needs can be supported
Following intensive engagement, I am pleased that there is now a commitment to work towards a return to school for students in special schools and primary school special classes - as well as some students with SEN in mainstream primary classes - from the 21st January.
1/ Shocked by this. There should be no emergency. There only is because
@ncseirl
@Education_Ire
didn’t plan appropriately. The establishment of “centres” for children who wish to be educated in special classes in mainstream settings is not enough
My piece in
@IrishTimes
today on what does inclusion really mean? Any steps to reform inclusive education must place the experiences of students centrally.
@AsIAmIreland
will work hard to bring their perspectives forward in
@ncseirl
policy review
Big morning as
@AsIAmIreland
appears the
@OireachtasNews
Committee on Autism for the first time. Will be highlighting the need for a radical, statutory and appropriately resourced Autism Strategy
Unfortunately some schools continue to promote homophobia by refusing to teach actual RSE which is inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community. Religious patronage which blocks this is a) a child protection issue and b) allowing a climate which lends itself to hate crime
Every public school in Ireland should have thorough and inclusive LGBTQ+ education in the curriculum and no patron body should have any right to veto or dilute it.
Tonight, for the third time, it has been decided by others that children with disabilities do not have a right to an essential service. That all their preparation to return to school, which will now cause such confusion and anxiety, has been in vain.
I’m so proud of my brother
@SimonHarrisTD
. The public now know these ‘protestors’ are New and Real IRA sympathisers / thugs and by extension who the real embarrassment is.
Absolutely bizarre that this is being allowed to persist. No one has the right to blockade a road or seek to intimidate. Such behaviour should never be ignored or minimised and in any other circumstance it wouldn’t be tolerated. Racism = racism. Public disorder = public disorder
The blockade at a hotel housing asylum seekers in Inch, Co Clare is reflecting a real frustration and anger with the Government, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said, and responsibility lies with them
Good morning! Today marks World Autism Day and the start of a month of activities highlighting the need for autism acceptance and understanding.
@AsIAmIreland
have launched a poll on public attitudes to autism to mark the day
In Northern Ireland, many classes for children with special needs have remained open despite

Really proud of our team who have developed a superb and totally free resource pack for primary & secondary schools to use to promote autism acceptance among students
We've developed a Resource Pack for Primary and Secondary Schools to use this April to increase acceptance and understanding of autism. The pack includes videos, worksheets, posters, and activities for your class and school. To find out more, email schools

This is shocking - a man who expressed clearly homophobic and racist views is nominated for this position during pride and at a time when people's eyes are being opened to racism.

@RadioBrendanRTE
on challenging Richard Dawkins for his illogical, ableist opinions. Disabled people’s suffering often derives from society and uninformed, ignorant people within it. It’s that nonsense which increases “suffering in the world” not disabled people

We need to turn down the temperature. The way our community has been treated here in recent days has often been vile. I do hope all educators will look at who they follow, what they have said and show how, using ‘unfollow’, ‘report’ and ‘block’ buttons that they reject bullying

Really welcome news that special classes at second-level will now re-open on 22nd February. Important progress for 3,000 students. We now need to provide in-school support for the 68% of autistic students who are in mainstream but in many cases have been unable to learn remotely.

Appalling decision - do Autistic young people and families not deserve the same reassurance as all other young people? Blatant discrimination which poses serious questions of governance and transparency. We need
@MaryButlerTD
to engage and overrule
AsIAm are deeply concerned by the decision of the Child Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to exclude autistic people and their families from the upcoming audit of its services.
Congratulations Mr President-Elect -a man of decency with deep Irish roots. Great to see a Harris going to the White House with you!
@KamalaHarris
-1st female Vice President of the US. Historic moment & one I will tell my little girl all about. You can be whatever you want to be!
Very disappointed with this from
@Education_Ire
- sends a message that SEN resources are there to plug holes - this fails students who more than ever need support but also sets a worrying precedent. COVID-19 measures require COVID-19 resources not those of vulnerable students
This is hurtful. Imagine being an autistic student in class whilst this depiction of autism was taught. Discriminatory attitudes are taught. Publications like this do so.
@AsIAmIreland
has received complaints and we have written to publisher to ask them to take action
That their constitutional right to an appropriate education is somehow suspended. That the challenges and failures of last year are to be repeated. We must acknowledge that this is a high-risk strategy which does seriously impact on long term quality of life
They say don’t meet your heroes but today a group of our incredible young people did and they were anything but disappointed. Representation matters so much and how lucky we are to count

James McClean is a fantastic role model for young autistic people. His openness about his and his daughter's autism diagnoses empowers others to embrace their identities without fear of judgment. This year, as we celebrate our 10th birthday, his support is especially meaningful.

@Education_Ire
should direct
@ncseirl
to create a central database of children who aren’t in an appropriate school place including those out of school, in places not aligned to the recommendations in their psych report, those learning at home or simply not attending.
This is beyond disgusting. You can be Irish or you can be racist. It’s your choice. As a community we must have zero tolerance for those who choose the latter...
This is the house burned down in Galway that was meant to be a home for a Mincéir family, comments under news articles calling the arsonists 'Heroes', "Not all heroes wear capes says one person with another saying "Pity the Travellers weren't in there". No racism in Ireland eh?
Shocked by the way
@CatholicPrimary
refer to Autistic people in their letter on trans rights in education. Ignores experiences of Autistic trans people, using their presence as a means to discredit. Autistic people face enough barriers to bodily autonomy. Education needed here!
"We believe we must push our understanding and inclusion of autistic people beyond the school gate and into wider society and I can't think of a better platform to advance this goal than the United Nations." - AsIAm CEO Adam Harris.
