Sooo, I started a podcast centered around people with rare diseases or who have endured rare health issues.
Hoping it helps others and helps me get more comfortable sharing my own journey (eventually) w/ a 1-in-a-million autoimmune condition.
Episode 1
1) Dear Philly, I’m not sure how best to tell this on Twitter b/c it’s a story 40 years in the making. I‘ll write in detail when I am healthy enough.
I‘m sick. Been sick for months. Turns out I’ve been sick all my life & never knew. I just learned how to cope with each symptom
There is a ton of racism in medicine and a ton of racist doctors who pretend it doesn’t exist while basking in the glow of hero worship during the coronavirus pandemic. The racist white privileged media amplifies them repeatedly.
I yield my time.
Fuck you.
Bo Kimble is the new coach at Overbrook and “the system” that helped he and Hank Gathers rise to national prominence at Loyola Marymount has come with him:
21) Dear Philly, I love y’all. Stay safe out there.
And I will be back.
✌🏾
If anybody dealing w/ something similar wants to connect, my work email is acarter @ Inquirer . com
So this week, my doc fully cleared me to return to work! Met w/ my bosses too. So surreal. So overwhelming. So grateful to be alive & grateful to still have a place
@PhillyInquirer
which didn’t have to stand by me!

Yo, I appreciate you, Philly high school hoops. Best job on earth, bar none. Y’all inspire us more than y’all know. PIAAs up next. Salute to the Pub and PCL players and coaches.
Something is brewing at Cristo Rey High School in North Philly, and the chef’s include a playground legend, a former Temple standout & NBA & international player, and a former Villanova captain.
Story soon…
Hey, everybody. Difficult news to share today.
But please know that while scary, it’s not necessarily catastrophic, it is treatable, & there is hope, ok?
Also, please forgive me while I GIF/meme my way thru this jawn, so it’s not so heavy the whole damn time😂🤷🏾♂️

NBA refs consistently rewarding this 💩 has made the league hard for me to watch. Just not fun. Too much of NBA scoring has become how can I trick the refs, instead of just getting buckets. It’s too obvious. Embarrassing.
Imhotep Charter junior defensive back Kenneth Woseley II just committed to Penn State while surrounded by friends, family, and teammates inside Imhotep.
Finally some GREAT news! New treatment has worked well. Latest infusion was April. My doc just cleared my return to work. I’m still physically disabled & not sure what a return will look like. But I won an APSE award last yr for a story I wrote from home before the new trtmnt

Yo, Philly. Thanks for sending the continued good vibes. You are definitely appreciated!
Just wanted to give y’all an update because you might start seeing my byline soon. As usual on this wild ride, it’s a good news/bad news kinda thing.
Today, I’m standing with my colleagues of color at the
@PhillyInquirer
because we are sick and tired.✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Things need to change. We call on The Inquirer to do better. To be better.
Here is the open letter we sent our newsroom leadership yesterday:
Long health update. Sorry if it’s hard to understand this way. Ok to share. Stories are meant to be told, right? Otherwise who do they help?
Also, Sixers in 4. ✊🏾
(1)
Hameen Carroll-Shaw, a junior at West Catholic, with the best play you’ll see tonight that didn’t count. A holding penalty negated the first-half run, but not the fan reaction. 😱

Greatness often occurs when nobody is watching
So I filmed Imhotep senior
@AhmadNowell0
, the UCONN commit who’s been working out before school for years.
I tried something new & made a beat using the sounds in the gym bc the soundtrack to greatness is often scored in empty gyms
Few yrs ago, my gf was basically keeping me alive.
I couldn’t walk, couldn’t talk. Her life was awful.
A few colleagues sent gifts that lifted my spirits.
@jensenoffcampus
knew my gf loved coffee so he sent us a gift card so she could get a boatload.
Still chokes me up…
Dear folks in media, whenever young athletes are shot/killed, it’s unnecessary to immediately call the same coaches again & again just bc they’ve experienced it before. Reliving it traumatizes them. I know bc they’ve told me.
Langston Wilson gave his heart to basketball & watched for years as it made dreams come true for others.
Now, his dream is no longer deferred.
“There are miracles happening every day. And my son is a walking miracle,” - Ron Wilson, frmr Villanova center
“I’m here for a reason, so I gotta keep pushing myself to the next level.”
— Nydair Rouse, Green Bay

rookie CB, Philadelphia-born, survivor of gun violence, chaser of dreams.

“This is not just my son; it’s my baby. He’s the youngest. It’s a decision that no parent wants to make. But at the same time, I would rather make that decision than make funeral arrangements.”
“Big Play Kabe?”
Kabe Goss hits the game-winner for Roman, which held off Ryan in overtime, 46-45, to claim its second consecutive Catholic League title.
So proud and appreciative of all my colleagues
@PhillyInquirer
who - with integrity, poise, & precision - did their jobs during a pandemic while also enduring threats, physical assaults, tear gas, & more. The job isn’t finished. It never will be. But know you are appreciated. ✊🏾

Started thinking about why Catholic League basketball, one of the most well-respected leagues in the nation, has yet to add a shot clock while other leagues have.
Ended up wondering if the PCL should at least consider leaving the PIAA.

Whatever this thing is, I’ll rumble it til the wheels fall off. I’ll also share the details & maybe spread some awareness, bc there are people out there silently battling some really scary stuff, or maybe they’re just not being heard often enough.
Thanks again!!
✌🏾❤️
Latest story is in print today.
Also, tried something new online by adding a podcast convo w/ 4 coaches & a licensed clinical social worker.
Wanted people to hear directly from high school coaches talking trauma & its various consequences.

“Basketball, I’m telling you, it’s more than just dribbling the ball and playing. You have to think beyond basketball. It can be the tool that gets you somewhere, but it ain’t just about playing. Basketball can call your name in any way, shape or form.”

When I was contemplating a career in journalism, I emailed David Stern to pick his brain about what he thought made a good journalist. To my surprise, he responded, & even made time for a phone call. The generosity of his time taught me a lot.
Eagles rookie Shareef Miller (

1/ Hunger Games Series:
What if you had the talent to earn the scholarship you always hoped could change your life, but didn’t have enough food to chase it? Meek Mill called them “Oodles ‘O Noodles Babies.” Generations of athletes know this struggle.
Salute to the folks who fight for our young people in various ways every day, all day, selflessly, thanklessly, when it’s easy, when it’s hard, especially when it’s hard. You know who you are. You are appreciated. Get home safe tonight, y’all. ✌🏾

Don’t usually acknowledge my birthdays, but today is one that feels better than most because I wasn’t always sure I’d see this one. Grateful for another trip around this rock. Grateful for all the support this year. Thank you! 🫡
