𝐃𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐚: 𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 is sited on the arid island of Khadir in Gujarat. Occupied between ca. 3000-1500 BCE, the archaeological site, one of the best preserved urban settlements from the period in Southeast Asia, comprises a fortified city & a cemetery.

Apart from the excavated remains, one of the most major find was the discovery of a buried Vishnu sculpture from the western part of the village. Subsequent excavations conducted around the image revealed it to be a life size image of Vishnu measuring about 2 meters in height.

The plain stone work shown in the image was done in mid1980s. ASI used plain stone only wherein there was no evidence left & as per ASI’s the then archaeological policy only such portions were filled with plain stones. ASI would like to confirm that no sculpture has been replaced

Another interesting find is the small rectangular brick tank exposed near the inner lining of the curved brick structure. The available brick sizes (43 - 48 cms) are comparable with the Satavahana / Ikshvaku period structures in Krishna valley i.e. Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda.

Asoka inscription of Sahasaram (232 or 231 BCE) consists of eight lines in archaic Brahmi characters. A portion of the inscription is damaged. The inscriptions, probably contains a date referring to the death of Buddha; but no convincing interpretation of it has yet been found.

The most outstanding discovery is of massive sized brick enclosure wall at the southern part of the mound. This structure is of baked bricks and exposed to a length of more than 75 meters with an average width of about 3.40 meters, which rise to a height of nearly 2 meters.

Today Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman handed over the Bronze Idol of 'Buddha in Bhumisparsha Mudra' to MoS for Culture & Tourism (IC) Shri @prahladspatel . The Idol was stolen on 22nd August, 1961 from Nalanda Museum of ASI and had resurfaced at a trade fair in Britain.

Interesting pottery finds are the base of conical jars placed at the eastern side of the structure. Such conical jars are widely distributed in Tamil Nadu and considered to be imitated variety of Roman Amphorae jars.

The findings of assorted stone tools of Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods from secondary contexts suggest that prehistoric people also occupied this area. Further studies are being carried out through geological, chemical analysis of the site/samples.

Explorations conducted in and around Gottiprolu within a radius of 15 kilometers revealed important vestiges viz., fortified early historic settlement at Puduru, Sunbrahmanya temple at Mallam, unique rock cut laterite stepped well at Yakasiri, Vishnu temple at Tirumuru.

2 Cannons found during Conservation work at Red Fort are now placed for public viewing by @ASIGoI . These cannons were hardly visible as the major portion was buried. After chemical cleaning & preservative coating, cannons are now placed at Lahori Gate for general public to view.

Rani-ki-Vav, a stepwell situated in Patan, Gujarat was built as a memorial to King Bhima I by his Queen Udayamati, of 11th century Chaulukya dynasty. The stepwell was flooded by Saraswati river & silted over for centuries before getting rediscovered in 1940s. #WorldHeritageweek

Trichy Circle of @ASIGoI retrieved a 12th century Jaina image from Kumbakonam court, Tamilnadu. The image was stolen in 1999 & retrieved in the same year by Thanjavur police but was lying in Kumbakonam court. Now the image is returned to ASI by Hon'ble Kumbakonam court.
