The epidemic of drug overdose deaths is a national disaster. It claimed more than 64k lives in 2016, many of them by
#opioid
overdoses. That’s far more than the number of deaths from HIV/AIDS in the peak year of 1995.
Most doctors leave medical school without education in addiction medicine. Policymakers must pass legislation that will help teach addiction medicine, grow the workforce, and save lives.
There is not much incentive to specialize in addiction medicine and almost no substantial education available for medical students. Yet addictions to tobacco, alcohol and drugs led to 632,000 deaths a year.
