Look at John Stones offering his input to Pep here.
This is the result of years of experience—greater knowledge that has been empowered & forged by Pep.
Guardiolan footballers develop better understanding & tactical mindsets to make better decisions—they learn, like students.
Jude Bellingham is a ‘galactico’
He was born and bred to play for Los Blancos.
Look at this celebration, oozes a sporting arrogance which is justified by his alien ability on a football pitch.
He is him.
This isn’t a bad performance, far from it—exceptional in his take ons, retained and controlled the tempo when we needed him to.
He’s a high risk, high reward player, he’s aggressive in his actions—as a result he’s more likely to lose the ball or make rash actions.
Like Raheem
This is why you don’t follow the crowd’s consensus, he was never a flop signing.
Josko Gvardiol will become one of the best of his generation—freak biomechanics & physical profile that enables his technical proficiency in possession & his duelling/defending out of possession.
Mattheus Nunes replaces De Bruyne level ball carrying.
Rodri replaces De Bruyne’s ability to provide high efficiency chance creation through final ball/3rd phase innovation with his IQ.
Phil Foden replaces De Bruyne’s high volume chance creation, more numbers/not efficiency.
Pep says Matheus Nunes can play as a holding & attacking midfielder, and with time he can play as a fullback 😳
Says Nunes has to improve in his first touch, and decision with one touch because it’s not precise enough
Says Nunes drives the ball like KDB
Just like TAA, Ederson is a freak in one aspect of the game that it completely disregards the other side.
At Man City, we won’t face many shots. I want ball-playing and proactive goalkeeping (cross claims + sweeping).
You interested in save percentages? Brentford is your club.
Pep Guardiola knows he has a ‘specialist’ in Jeremy Doku—a player who is one of the best in class for his role.
As such, Pep has now created mechanisms which manufacture isolation for him—generating moments in which he can thrive.
And he’s doing just that.
a thread/🧵.
What sets De Bruyne apart from most players in his bracket is the ability to play at high speeds/high intensities whilst maintaining incision and accuracy in his final 3rd actions.
He’s so intelligent—not many are like him. Alien.
Mattheus Nunes only had 30 minutes to make a difference to the game but his movement for the 3rd goal—that was enough for his cameo.
Simple movement/strikers movement which pulls Coufal inside—generates space for Haaland who doesn’t need to create separation to get his shot off.
Bernardo Silva will be remembered as a protagonist for Pep’s Man City, a true legend of the club and league.
Can play in virtually any role, in any zone and play it to an elite level, unicorn.
Can dictate / speed up rhythm of a game.
He absolutely toyed with Manchester United.
That’s why Kevin De Bruyne belongs in the ‘game-breaker’ archetype. He can absolutely flip a game on its head.
His impact, his range of influence in the final 3rd is unstoppable. Can kill you with one pass, one action.
He makes teams feel helpless, unmatchable.
He’s back.
Despite his abundance of bad luck, his body letting him down time and time again…
Neymar Jr is STILL amongst the worlds best players to exist, a testament to Neymar only.
If this is the last dance—I lived it and loved it.
Thank you, Neymar Jr.
£15 million for Manuel Akanji is some of the best business we’ve ever done.
Not many places you can find a defender as complete as him—technically, mentally and physically elite.
Can play LB, CB or RB too, no angle bias, can easily adapt and ambipedal. Such good value there.
Nathan Ake is Mr. Consistent in our team. He always gives you a level of performance you can trust. Especially in the title run-ins. Availability.
The fact he’s never spoke about in a justified light, shows his quality maintenance he has over a season.
This clip doesn’t show a single bad action, he was never winning a 2vs1.
Grealish waits for the 2nd defender to shift over before releasing the ball to a receiver who is consequently in MORE space.
This is a block manipulating action, a good one too.
He’s going to prove all of his doubters wrong and there’s nothing they can do about it.
Nunes was never going to fail, his skillset is too autonomous to do so—he can do things by himself without the need to assimilate to a system.
A monster carrier and space eater, Toure lite.
Manchester City’s failings to acquire key midfield targets in the transfer market has led them down the rabbit hole of dead ends—now they finally have their man, Mattheus Nunes.
*mega* thread/🧵
Jack Grealish is Pep’s greatest tactical tool.
One of our main ball retainers in wide areas, the teams recirculation point & ‘rest area’.
One of the teams main transition tools & ball handlers against big teams.
A playmaker against stubborn blocks.
He is the constant.
Pep’s greatest tactical tool might be Jack Grealish when all is considered.
You need a game-state dependent momentum killer/retainer? Jack Grealish.
You need a transitional tool against the big sides? Jack Grealish.
Swiss Army knife player, bows to the managers aims and wills.
Bernardo Silva is what you define as a ‘unicorn’ player.
You can’t find many players that can play multiple roles with same aptitude and poise he can.
Can adapt to any role and attack any situation to an elite standard. A good professional attitude to partner it to.
Roberto De Zerbi is not a bad coach, he just isn’t an ELITE one yet.
If you hire him, you get what’s on the tin—circuits & build up patterns that align with his strict possession principles.
Not a pragmatist - relies on heavily coordinated & rehearsed patterns.
mini-thread/🧵
Savio is such a no brainer for us as a RW option—little negotiating + low fee to acquire him.
A ‘breaker’ type—1vs1, isolation winger with great dribbling + possesses long legs to win offensive duels and gain separation from defenders.
Brazilian (assimilates with POR players).
It makes me laugh how quick people are to write Matheus Nunes off.
This profile of player - who can dominate 40 yards of space both in and out of possession - is wanted by elite sides.
Don’t compare him to Phillips, Nunes has perceptible qualities.
What’s unfortunate about Phil Foden’s situation is he is being held back, indirectly. By KDB & Pep Guardiola mostly.
He will be the face of the club soon & I will love it. But not until Kevin is gone & the advanced role is free.
He is the Prince, waiting for the King to die.
Rodri will never be respected as much as he deserves and the reason is simple.
He’s a dark horse personality, a secret operative who doesn’t like the public spotlight.
He has no social media, no major platform to farm interactions off so there’s no incentive to use his name.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐥—Mattheus Nunes has finally arrived in Manchester, however a creative hole still looms over City’s midfield—forced by De Bruyne’s injury.
With no like for like replacement available, this is how Manchester City can fill the creative void.
*mini* thread/🧵
Pep’s brilliance is what masks his challenges with his respective clubs because he has had them:
1) Taking over a toxic Barca dressing room—introducing La Masia talent and cutting big egos, guiding them to a treble.
2) First season at City / Prem with a average squad age of 30.
@JohyanCruyff
Pep taking on a challenge where the balance of the squad needs addressing and with financial restrictions, there is more chance of pigs flying
It’s very rare you see Kyle Walker (one of the best wide duellists in the world) get fried like he did against Mitoma.
That’s testament to Mitoma, even with minimal space and in an unfavourable match up, he still prevails.

Erling Haaland is a ‘gravity well’ 9.
Gravity wells represent the gravitational pull a large object / mass exert on another thing.
For all 3 goals; Haaland symbolises that, a large mass who pulls surrounding players into his gravity field—creating space for others.
Joao Neves is the perfect archetype of midfielder I want—great usage across middle zones. Can play as a compact LCM / 8, dominating small spaces and can deputise as a 6 for Rodri.
Great passer and carrier, Gundogan ilk player with better PnP + duelling.
Harry Maguire is one of the best CBs in the league.
Box defender in every sense—dominates the box, wins anything that comes his way (on the ground + in the air).
Organises the backline.
Breaks lines & progresses via his passing/carrying capability. He’s heavily slept on.
Leroy Sane was so cracked, one of the best wingers the league has seen.
The 2 way threat - ability to go inside / outside, the manoeuvrability in the small spaces, bendy legs allowing him to weave in and out of trouble.
Every action, aggressive.
PSG are going to have a midfield composition of Moscardo, Zaire-Emery and Simons.
—Moscardo; Ball winning 6, ground coverage.
—WZE; all action 8, ball carrying and progression from deeper zones + final 3rd influence.
—Simons; small space / pocket player.
Squad building.
Josko Gvardiol is a limitless footballer, unicorn. Exactly who you want in your team (our tactical tool). His skillset is pure dynamism/range, due to his technical + physical blend.
Passing/carrying & physicality to do it from all zones, for 90 minutes.
Josko Gvardiol shouldn’t be able to move like he should—his turning radius with them long legs is borderline alien.
His burst is insane. Enhances his capacity to carry, recover & retain the ball in tight / compact spaces.
Such a freak.
Matheus Nunes - €62m
Sergio Gomez - €13m
Kovacic - €35m
Kalvin Phillips - €50m
Joško Gvardiol - €90m
Total = €250m
There are no bad signings when you are winning. Havertz has had a better season than all these guys.
You don't even know what Sergio Gomez looks like.
I have a wild thought about Lisandro Martinez.
I have said in the past that I perceive his best role to be in the 2nd line—in a pivot with somebody that is great on the half turn and receiving/Amrabat.
If he doesn’t realise this inverted role, I actually think his 1st team
For a little guy, Joao Neves has such a large influence on the pitch.
The dominance in the small space preceding a 40 yard pass to unlock a defence, impact.
That’s my boy right there. Pay whatever it takes, that’s our all action guy we need.
Maximo Perrone in possession closely resembles Ilkay Gundogan.
He can be the hybrid 6/8 we want—ability to handle pressure deeper, temporisation for retention + progression.
Equally good higher up due to his exceptional reception technique—half turn, open body to go forward.
Never speak poorly of Trent Alexander-Arnold, he’s a superstar.
There is not many players you can get this type of range/influence (ZOI) from—creation of a ‘gamebreaking’
#10
, an extra defensive body & gives you 90 minutes of physical intensity + engine.
Josko Gvardiol offers so much tactical dynamism, with his vast range of actions. LCB/LB hybrid who can stay in the first line, or join the final line. Blends his technical/physical actions like no other. Just so much range & potential to his game. Limitless footballer.
Chelsea don’t realise just how good of a profile they have in Carney Chukwuemeka.
That frame is freakish—gives the capacity to shield + withstand contacts & win duels. Great physicality.
But has the technical refinement to manipulate the ball in tight areas when carrying.
This is what I meant about Kovacic replacing some ‘Gundo-isms’ in deeper zones.
Pressure handler, tempo setter who masters time—can progress via carries + passes but knows when.
A temporiser -> IQ when to play forwards or retain.
Get me Nico Williams.
Exceptional rhythm dribbler (slows his body down before bursts), dominant in the dribble—1vs1 or multiple players.
Long / slender legs, give him greater stride and power in the dribble.
Not even talked about his creation yet…
Pep Guardiola is a teacher.
He doesn’t just move players around in certain positions & roles, he opens his mind and empowers people.
Educates players, the knowledge & tools to enhance their cognitive process & decision making.
His brain is their brain, his process is theirs.
My theory about Haaland might have some truth in it.
Look at him carry the ball here, far less awkward / clunky. Looks shorter and more coordinated with the ball.
This is what current Hojlund looks like.
It was unfortunate that we lost Ilkay Gundogan but we replaced some qualities sufficiently with Kovacic.
Can be a makeshift 6, dictating tempo / rhythm but also carrying progressively from deeper zones.
Good incision to his game, final ball is top.
Jack Grealish’s importance is grossly underestimated.
Look at the difference at our grip on momentum before/after Grealish goes off injured.
He helps us reduce variance, control games and kill/retain momentum. So important for the UCL games. Big miss.
Rico Lewis’s talent should not be doubted.
He is the walking/talking personification of intelligence, with maturity & responsibility of a veteran technical leader.
Has the techno-tactical understanding & technical capacity of a La Masia graduate.
This is why Pep Guardiola is the best, he gets it.
—guiding principles & philosophy is a constant (never changes).
—game-model & tactical systems CAN change
—information gathered from players skillsets mould the methodology of the game-model (players are tactics)
Florian Wirtz’s transition capacity is massively capped by his lack of physicality; strength/speed = power to thrive in the carry. Means he can’t create faux transitions efficiently through carrying means. His ability in transitions is through his passing = releasing runners.
Kalvin Phillips is a prime example that our board can get stuff wrong, for all they do right. Mistakes happen.
The fact we had Romeo Lavia in the ranks and sold him to make way for Phillips… might be the greatest misstep by our board in recent years.
Oh well.
Jurgen Klopp made us better—as much as he was fighting against us, he also helped us raise our level every season to win titles.
A large portion of our success can also be attributed to Klopp and his Liverpool team.
That’s why I’m thankful for him.
So Nico Williams extended his contract, anyway here is Johan Bakayoko.
A multifaceted wide player—a ball carrying threat (high ball manipulation + body deception) and also a creative threat (final ball / weight of delivery).
Comp:
@HugoFilmz28
Look at the way Phil Foden effortlessly takes the ball in his stride for both goals, the ball just stays glued to his feet.
This is the ‘quickness’ in his game I was telling you about. No waste here. Just a touch, another touch, goal.
Perfect for a picket line forward.
Lamine Yamal doesn’t play like he’s a 16 years old, looks ridiculously mature and confident with the ball for his age.
Can become one of the greatest creative wingers of his generation—his carrying + dribbling (solo threat) along with his passing from wide + half space zones.
Florian Wirtz isn’t KDB.
Wirtz is a lot more fluid & ductile (a smooth operator), better in the small spaces with higher ball-manipulation & tighter turning radius.
Nowhere near as efficient in larger zones as KDB, not as physical.
He’s a pocket
#10
with fluidity, not KDB.
Mohammed Kudus was one of the best players I’ve seen at my stadium, live in the flesh. That’s no exaggeration either. So powerful in the transitions; his body frame & speed was so difficult to contain. But still the small space mastery was there. Wow, one of the best I’ve seen.
Antonio Nusa is a great pick up for Spurs, they’ve needed an isolation LW.
Admire his approach to defenders—controls stride (more steps closer to def. to settle) -> quick bursts (via body shifts) to unsettle.
Orientates at 45° making him 2 way.
Them Ederson long balls to Haaland are cash money every time, courtesy to Ederson’s brilliance when distributing.
I don’t want anymore nonsensical comparisons now. Eddie is No.1—no messing.
Winning the game 3-1 from 1-0 down, that’s what champions do—unbelievable mentality.
Doku MOTM for me—looked threatening in every action, pinned the defence back, domination over his defenders when dribbling, a near flawless performance.
Love this team. Also, long live
Manuel Akanji. Genius.
This is a performance at LB as a predominant right footer, his 3rd role. Look at the progression via his carries & passes. No angle bias. Ambipedal.
Now imagine the danger he could possess on the right… these numbers are night & day compared to Walker.
Look at this photo. Notice how comfortable and safe Newcastle think they are—most are flat footed. Thinking they are safe in a compact block.
They think they have De Bruyne where they want him and contained him.
3 seconds later, he unravels them with one pass. Game-breaker.
Phil Foden in LCM zones.
Roaming inside the left half-space/pockets, half turn receptions, one-twos (quickness I eluded to), verticality + straight line dribbles.
Even his signature finish into the far, bottom corner.
This is the truth, the reality.
Phil Foden at LCM, I don’t even need to tell you anymore.
Play him there and all good thinks come to fruition. In the pockets, receiving BTL and using his ‘quickness’
Taking it in his stride on his left allows for less ‘waste’ and can attack the box quicker.
Seen yesterday.
Manchester United never truly started their project if we’re being honest.
The project was in danger before a ball was kicked in the ETH tenure—from £85 million Antony to £65 million Casemiro.
High fees - floor raising signings.
Them type of signings should be £40-50 million.
Look at Matheus Nunes shine, no doubts from me.
He’s everything our midfield lacks—large zone influence, ground coverage and mobility. The best carrier in the squad, a little work needed on the final action.
But imagine what a consistent game time Matheus Nunes will look like.
The development & growth of John Stones into a Guardiolan footballer has been astonishing.
Descends from the Pep-Cruyff lineage.
Epitomises ‘total football’ with his intelligence + adaptability, has huge range to his game.
Techno-tactical understanding of his role.
This is Phil Foden’s biggest issue (currently) as a midfielder, his lack of pausa. Seen here, against Chelsea.
It’s because his game is naturally accustomed to using quicker actions when receiving.
But he must play slower, to make better actions.
Pep Guardiola: "
@PhilFoden
has a sixth gear. But he can't play all the time sixth gear. Play second, or third. With time he'll learn. Today [vs Brighton] was much better than games before. Everything so quick... no! Say, ‘Slower,’ to make it quicker after, surprise opponents..."
This double pivot makeup of Declan Rice/Kobbie Mainoo is perfection & United should aim to mirror the blueprint.
A more; mobile, ground covering, duelling, taller & positionally disciplined
#6
who can allow Mainoo to roam & connect as an
#8
.
Pep Guardiola is responsible for the mental development of the young guys.
Look at the maturity on display by Rico Lewis & Oscar Bobb in particular—don’t behave like raw youngsters anymore.
Not scared/nervous, part of the group now because of their gradual squad assimilation.
We conquered England, we conquered Europe and now we’ve conquered the world.
Gracias Señor, you have changed my life for the better and given me lifetime memories until my final day.
The consistency of Phil Foden’s passing execution is getting better (weighting is improving). It will eventually get there, his ball-striking is too good. Becoming a better threat in transition (aswell as the small spaces) because of that improvement.
To play at Goodison like Phil did takes courage and balls.
His influence was evident, the way he moved and demanded the ball like it was HIS.
Had the confidence and arrogance to just pick the ball up in any phase and relieve pressure using his carrying.
At Goodison, Goodison.
Not many players in the squad can execute a long distance carry or gain territory like this.
Mainly because not many have the legs + stride length to eat up space.
It’s so valuable, especially in transition phases.
Manu Akanji epitomises a modern day Pep Guardiola CB—
A calming presence on the ball with such a cool head—temperament / composure in possession helps him bait presses, retaining the ball until maximum pressure is exerted by opposition teams.
Extensive progression with his
Phil Foden is truly sensational, superlatives can’t do him justice.
When he’s in the pockets, he’s in the elite bracket with the worlds best to offer—the sense of goals and moments, the receptions in between the lines, the tempo changing.
It’s why I’ve always wanted him there.
If you ever wanted to know what a ‘controller’ midfielder looks like again after that shambles, sit and watch.
This is a midfielder, a controller. Someone who can exert a calmness and tranquil mood in a team.
I miss you so much Ilkay.
Comp:
@Matolisso
.
Nathan Ake is our best defender; Can defend small/large spaces, intelligence to defend central spaces (through sweeping actions), 1vs1 dueller, broad span, immense ground power/body shifting & tackling technique for the wider zones.
Our other defenders miss out in one way here.
Look at Tino Livramento man. One of the most complete full back profiles around. I’m seeing him conduct + play incisive through balls on the left, provide overlap support, lock wingers down 1vs1 and eat up 40 yards of space in / out of possession.
A zone dominator.
Rodri’s recent sloppiness in possession (misplaced passes + dwelling/indecision on the ball) is the ideal case study for physical deterioration = mental lapses & incorrect technical actions.
Being so fatigued, effects your cognitive capacity which impedes technical actions.
One thing that makes Bernardo Silva near irreplaceable is his IQ to be able to adapt to most roles.
However, he combines this with humbleness + professionalism to apply his usage in a team.
Oscar Bobb is that with less physical intensity to play deeper, the Prince.
You wonder why Jude Bellingham was our number 1 target?
Just like Gundogan, Bellingham is a needle mover. A player that can decide moments of a game, that can decide titles.
They are cut from the same cloth, invaluable profile of player.
Phil Foden is a momentum dribbler.
Dribbles / carries the ball with the existing flow of the game and has trouble changing the rhytym / tempo of a scenario.
He needs to watch Pedri’s game and take notes, add ‘pausa’ to his game—final level of becoming a specialist interior.
He’s not a CFG signing, this guy has shown generational promise in his youth career.
Type of LB where you give him freedom to roam and cause havoc down the left side—can play inside or occupy width, great dynamics and opportunity to interchange.
Exceptional ball-carrier,
BREAKING:
#ManCity
have now reached an agreement in principle with left-back Valentin Barco (19). Emissaries from
@ManCity
will travel to Argentina in order to reach an agreement with Boca Juniors.

Whenever Pep Guardiola feels someone isn’t hungry/willing enough & demonstrating a lack of carelessness, Rico Lewis will always be there as the counteract.
In the dark situations, Rico Lewis will brighten the room with his smile & charm. Mr. Dependable.
Watching that De Jong-Gundogan-Pedri midfield yesterday, with the distances so small and the close proximity to each other and how they control / dictate the flow of a game. So good.
And you look at our midfield dynamics, a 9 as one of our 8s who can’t dominate the small spaces.
Nicolo Barella is Inter Milan’s ELITE player.
Not many midfielders can rival his range & efficiency in all phases of play—a conductor in deeper zones.
High ZOI in carries & passing range + creative passer in the final 3rd.
Physical intensity & engine to cover ground & duel.
Being a
#6
should be deemed a secondary role for Kobbie Mainoo, his ceiling is an
#8
(similar to Gundogan).
Let him roam, use his intelligence & autonomous responsibility to be unleashed as a ‘connector’.
Plays at all angles, centralised gravity to dominate small spaces too.
Phil Foden’s best role is LCM, in the pockets ready for receptions between the lines.
He’s a vertical threat (penetrative straight line carries / runs) + one footedness on the left gives him greater range for actions on the left.
Comp:
@Ahsona7
Pep Guardiola doesn’t get his flowers enough man—he loses a main output source (Gundogan) and KDB for half of a season yet he still innovates to maximise his current players available.
Has used multiple systems and players in unnatural roles and it’s worked, 2 points from 1st.
Rafael Leao is literally the complete winger profile, absolute superstar.
Transitional tool, fluid dribbler to break down blocks, ball-striking, creative end product, ambipedal, separation gainer + maintainer and his output after that.
Game-breaker.
