American Weekly Magazine envisions Manhattan 100 years from now, in 2022: glass towers, enclosed skywalks, moving sidewalks, electric trains and luxury airships.
Further predictions by NYU Futurology Professor Ferdinand Shuler:
- Canals will replace streets, providing a place for bathing, canoeing, and boating.
- Trains will travel at speeds of 200 mph.
- Anti-gravity screens will prevent airplanes from falling from the sky.
- Food will be selected on “a scientific basis,” so that illnesses will be reduced to a minimum and few medicines taken.
- Restaurants will be predominately self-service.
- Homes will no longer rely on coal or require chimneys, and everyone will live in apartments.
Schuler makes further predictions about the state of the US in 100 years:
“Airships will be multi-storied, with swimming pools and elevators.”
“Offices will have large windows that let in lots of sunlight, contributing to workers’ overall health.”
“Hunger will be eradicated.”
