I am thrilled to share that I will join the Plant Biology Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an Assistant Professor inSpring 2025! Super excited to be a member of a very supportive & productive community and establish a strong plant evo-devo group there!
When I just started twitter I saw someone said that they don’t cut bands in gels and do gel purification then PCR - just use a toothpick to poke the correct band and dip it into PCR directly. With lots of doubt, I tried this out today very casually, and….
THIS MAGIC WORKS. 🤯
Skimmed through my PhD lab notebook one last time this week - almost brought me into tears. My lab notebook is like a diary of grad school, recorded all the raw emotions, and also how often my experiments failed. Like, most of the time actually and it was pretty hard lol. 🥲🥲🥲
This color change triggered by pollinator phenomenon is more common than some may expect - for example Lantana camara too, yellow are newly opened unpollinated flowers, while red ones are older and pollination triggered the production of more anthocyanin. Plants are smart! 🤓
Forget-me-not fun fact: the yellow ring at the flower’s centre fades to white after pollination, signalling to insects there’s no more nectar. The insects therefore learn to visit the flowers that haven’t yet been pollinated, ensuring no forget-me-not flower is forgotten 🤙
Saw this from a post of "Co's Digital Flora of the Philippines" FB group (which doesn't have an equivalent twitter account for me to RT) - look at those amazing flower-life leaf
#GALLS
omg!!!
Streptocarpus dunnii, a very dramatic plant. Makes only 1 leaf of its entire life, won't bloom for years, then make a lot of very pretty flowers at once, then it dies.

In Jan. I planned to submit a paper by the end of March, it felt very doable.
But you know, things happened, so it's pushed to Apr.
Then to May.
Then to June.
Then to July.
And finally today, end of Aug: submitted!
Tired but relieved. We will see how it goes!
@AcademicChatter
My mask covered up my excitement of seeing so many jade vine blooming together for the first time. I was totally screaming and losing it inside. Look at these amazing flowers!

I'm extremely grateful to be awarded the Merit Fellowship! My non-US status makes me ineligible to apply for almost all big fellowships that provide stipends in the US, but Merit is not one of them. Thank you!
Just learned my parents secretly ordered many hard copies of my PhD dissertation so that they can 1) give to people to show off and 2) give me some royalties as my bday present. Of course they think I can get royalties from the book I wrote. 😭 I like their version of academia.
Somehow I end up with 4k followers and please let me re-intro! My name is Min Ya (or Minya). I'm finishing my PhD at

Always lovely to see trilliums, but what’s more interesting (sorry trillium!) is to find green stripes in their petals. This is not a pigmentation pattern willingly made by the plant, rather, it’s caused by obligate bacteria parasites called phytoplasmas.
Big personal announcements:
1. My PhD defense date has been scheduled: Aug 26 LET’S GOOOO!!
2. I will be joining
@colreeze
’s lab as a postdoc after that: HELLO

Feeling little homesick. Dad just sent me many photos to show off a new water fountain he made at home - yes he did everything including carving the bamboos etc. Speaking of how did I get into photography and plants? Well, it started when I was very little and it's

For the past 6+ years, I had lots of thoughts about how floral meristems terminate to make flowers, esp from an evo-devo viewpoint. Now, these thoughts are distilled into 2000 words and I humbly share them with the community on

Just read up some new

Today is the 2161-year-old birthday of my high school, IT'S *THE* OLDEST SCHOOL IN THE WORLD! Of course it has a wiki page ! Its name, Shishi, means stone house. I love my beautiful high school and it helped the lost teenager me find passion again.
I’m so excited to share that I was recommended for funding for my

I've been having trouble amplifying a 3kb promoter region that's AT-rich (80%!) w. lots of repetitive elements, then I saw this (). Gave it a go w/o much hope. But, dang, lower the extension temp and adding some MgCl2 instantly did the miracle. 🤯
Happy Chinese New Year!! My parents view this as the most important day of the year, but this is already the 3rd year that I couldn't be home with them. Missing the family so much and making dumplings today totally make it worse, but at least they are yummy! 😭😋🎆🧧
Oops, being asked to confirm

-PCR again by a reviewer. Although I have, um (check notes), EIGHT biological replicates per developmental stage. 😬
I really loved seeing how many Asian/AA folks put their names (not just the English spellings) on their twitter now. It's so interesting to see everyone's name and I actually understand what some of your names mean. I felt I got to know you a little better and I appreciate it! 🥂
Today I ran into an incredibly cute paper! This group made "pipette-like device with bubble-free capture and drop of liquids" that's inspired by the

(Yes I was procrastinating from thesis writing but look at what I found!)
Hey guys, I want to show you the biggest project I did since my

Look at these ~stunning~ mountain laurel

If you look closer, you'd be curious about why the stamens are so bent and what are the little nobs on the petals?
Well, they are there for a super cool thing:

Guess who just submitted her formatted dissertation to her committee for approval???? 💅🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Meanwhile, look at these cute paintings that I got during thesis writing for self-encouragement.
It always seems impossible, until it’s done.

The person who went through all my joys and struggles during grad school just did a phenomenon defense and become Dr. Enalls! He's literally a perfect human being doing groundbreaking science!
@BrandonEnalls
I LOVE YOU AND I AM SO SO PROUD OF YOU!!! 😭❤️
Both my dumpster orchids are blooming beautifully recently and that makes me think their flowering cue is day length? They are called dumpster orchids bc I found them in dumpsters. Many think their orchids are "done" and throw them away when the bloom is gone👈🏼don't be like that.
I am over the moon to share that our latest live-imaging of Aquilegia floral meristem paper is now out in

I'm getting a driver's license for the 1st time.
This is shocking to many people that how I managed to survive this long, but it's shocking to me that people don't realize there are many places in the world you can totally live a very comfortable & convenient life w/o driving.
As

community for 2 years & I got so much support from many people. Here's my Thank You dance performed by me in a forest with some fronds.
Part of my heart died this week when Penny had a sudden heart attack and died on Tu. She made me a cat person. She was beautiful, friendly, loving. She was Nickel’s best friend. She was only 6. The hashtag

only lasted for 2 years. We miss and love her very much.
I gained some new followers after the fellowship announcement and now it's the best time to bring everyone's attention to
#BlackBotanistsWeek
which starts tomorrow!
Be as excited as this bee, and get ready to know some cool people and cool plants!
I am thrilled to share our latest preprint, where we crossed 2 beautiful sister species of

How is the natural variation in the timing of floral meristem termination (FMT) controlled? 1/7
Cooking dishes with

seeds tonight and suddenly thought maybe I should tweet about it: 1) Ginkgo seeds are so yummy and good with so many things! 2) always remember to remove the embryos in seeds, which could be mildly poisonous if eating too much!
To knock down gene expression in
#Aquilegia
, we use Virus-Induced Gene Silencing
#VIGS
, which is a cool tool but the effect can be very patchy.
Here's a good example of how patchy it can be: 2 flowers from the same stem, 1 silenced (white w. phenotype) & 1 normal (red).

Making all my defense slides in Eng & Chinese with some Chinese subtitles bc my parents don't understand any Eng. But I learned everything in Eng so I actually have no idea how most things are called in Chinese. Currently experiencing a deep learning curve in my mother tongue. 🥶
I went down a google scholar rabbit hole today and by accident encountered
@TengZhang_UH
's PhD thesis. Simming through it I found this amazing panel in a figure, using music to explain the patterning rhythm of meristem initiation. And wow, I can't express how much I love it!
Speaking of long term, stable, committed relationships, here I am entering the fifth year with my beautiful precious African

TGIF and I’d like to introduce you to the stupidest tubes I’ve ever used: almost impossible to write on cap bc it’s not flat; doesnt fit any tube racks; sure they looks# kinda cute but they actually can’t stand well, any mild movement in the air will just make them all fall. WHY.
No I didn’t play with saturation at all. I just looked up and the saturation was already exploded. I’m so obssed with it!

Had a great morning because

evaluations are out and my students all left very very nice comments! 🥰 Gonna show off three here because I think I might have started a cult lol. 🤣
My name 闵 (Min) means having sympathy, 娅 (Ya) has two parts: one part means Asia, the other part indicates I'm a girl. My grandpa gave me this name because he was very happy to find out I'm a girl; I'm the 2nd girl (1st was my aunt) ever born in the family for 4 generations.
I really loved seeing how many Asian/AA folks put their names (not just the English spellings) on their twitter now. It's so interesting to see everyone's name and I actually understand what some of your names mean. I felt I got to know you a little better and I appreciate it! 🥂
Haptonasty, a wonderful botanical word describing rapid movements of stamens when touched and Sparrmannia species are very well known for that. From my personal experience, I can also tell you that touching stamens and watching them move is a very enjoyable and addictive thing.
Thinking about getting a dash cam only because my daily routine drive is getting more and more insanely beautiful everyday! The most magical time of New England is coming 💛🍁🍂
Thrilled to share our latest publication on

on the genetic architecture of natrual variation in floral meristem termination! A fun project combining QTL, histology, in situ hybridization, ~5000 flowers counted, collab w.

Last time I saw my parents in person was at home in China on Aug. 31st 2018; exactly 2 years ago. I was busy with conference&experiments in the summer of 2019 so I didn't go back home. I thought it’s ok I will just go back in 2020 winter or summer. Now look how wrong was I. 唉。
I got an email about paper rejection early morning and an email about another paper being selected as the highlight of the issue of the journal early afternoon um what kind of roller coaster is this I'm so tired and so done for the day and it's not even 1pm.
Related: My friend (Chinese) got a reviewer asking his paper edited by a native speaker. He happens to be the winner of the oldest/most prestigious writing award at Harvard in 2021 & a writer for a few magazines. We wondered whether things will change if he had an "English" name.
Muting because annoying people are creeping in with their "BuT NaTIve EnGlisH sPeAkErS ArE JuSt BeTTeR" and "We'Re sAcRiFiCiNg GoOd ScIEnCE WrItInG" and other nonsense so better to 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫
This piece has been out for 1.5 years and sadly the convo always moves that way 😑🙄
We moved in our new home in CT this week and Ive been very sleep deprived for many reasons, 1 being battling w. a family of mice living with us 🙃 Being exhausted while drinking coffee this morning, realize this is my view from the dining room from now, suddenly felt much better!
This past week has been very quiet for me. I spent prob only 10% of my normal time on twitter and I slept so much. I slept as I would never sleep again and catching up sleep feels so damn good. I hope I'm officially recharged for 2021, and now it's time to get this PhD done. 💃🏻
Thanks to everyone's kind words, I put the video on youtube (with some security measures of course bc it's scary!), and please feel free to share/use. Warning: don't get your hopes up too high because people are being just super nice to me!

Shared this with someone again today. Love this FISH image of repeats in teosinte. Wonderful visual of genetic diversity. FISH by Patrice Alberts at U. Missouri.
Transformed the same amount of HiFi assembly product of a 20kb plasmid into the same amount of Top10 (left plate) vs. NEB 10 Beta (right plate) competent cells. Same transformation & growth condition too. The efficiency difference is too 👀👀👀
Earlier this year we saw the news that Nature is gonna charge €9500 for open access and I thought this decision only applies to *the* Nature. But it turned out that 32 Nature sub journals are doing the same: €9500 for OA. LOL I forgot how shitty this whole thing was/is.

Lol so last year someone came to take some *very* staged photos of my PI, like this one w. me & Prem. Today I got an email asking is it ok for the president of
