If you see a zoom or tv footage of a white person with Aboriginal art in the background pls send to me or ping me? I want to document this phenomenon. I’m like the David Attenborough of Twitter, observing the white people in their natural habitats. I should blend in just fine.
Let me be clear about something. I own a lot of Aboriginal art. I love it. It’s part of my family’s culture. White people: I am not saying don’t buy Aboriginal art. Please do (from Aboriginal-owned galleries or direct from Aboriginal artists).
What I am saying is that owning a piece of art does not say anything about you. It does not make you less racist, more woke. It just makes you someone who owns a piece of art. I know lots of racist people who own *beautiful* Aboriginal art.
So setting up your zoom in front of it or moving it so it’s your backdrop convinces no one. You may be the loveliest, least racist white person in the history of ppl... but it has nothing to do with the art you buy and hang on your wall. Don’t @ me. We’re done here. Fin.
@benwatson200
And I'm guessing they do a lot of pro bono work for Aboriginal people who are disproportionately punished by a racist judicial system also? ;-)
@yodaberg
*nervous glance*
I have a print from
@InjalakArts
waiting to be framed (and a carved bird from Tiwi Designs in Wurrumiyanga) does that count?
@yodaberg
Oh it's everywhere... Just for a change though, pretty sure I saw a news update cross to a first nations fella and he had a Brett Whiteley in the background...
Tanya Plibersek, definitely. Although probably safe to assume the entire ALP left. Will update when I see one!
@yodaberg
I like a lot of the various indigenous art. But haven't bought too much of it. For me, I'd rather buy from the artist than someone who is just in it for the money & is not indigenous. If that makes sense?
My zoom background is blank. I hate distractions.
@bwalen
It’s an observation that there seem to be a LOT of white people using it as window dressing. Like the number of white people zooming with Aboriginal art in the background is staggering.
